Anyone care to post a unprocessed M9 jpeg straight from the camera. I am condsidering the purchase of an M9 and I'm curious how the straight out the camera images look prior to processing. Currently shooting Nikon DSLR and I have things set up in camera so that my out of camera jpegs really don't need a lot of post. I'd like to get a sense of how the Leica jpegs look and I know from what I have read that people feel you need to shoot in RAW to get the most out of the files but I don't

Hi, Jack, If you shoot B&W, I think Leica M9 JPEG file are very pleasing. Much better than my D700. The curve JPEG engine does make it a lot like film than my D700 output.

Shooting color in JPEG only is no go for me. It is too risky because Auto WB sucks, so you got wired color which is difficult to correct especially under difficult lighting and fast changing lighting. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you do Manual WB under well controlled light. Again, my experience is M9 is more difficult camera shoot JPG. I believe Canikon, Fiji, Olympus etc all must invest multi-million dollar to fine tune their JPG engine, which is certainly not the case of Leica. Raw developer also seems spend more time with those big player at default picture style setting.

But, I don’t see any fussy about this. I usually have a preset in LR4 and don’t spend any time on an image I don’t want post here or flickr. Some of the images don’t need PP, and none of them I spend more than 20mins. This is essentially the same work flow of my other digital camera.
Charles, I like the last one from rainbow beach. Love the sunstar.

Luka, whole film set is cool. I love the number 1 (though dono what are those?) and last three.

Dan, that ISO1250 shot looks extreme clean. Nice color too.

Hilmar, the car shot from Noct is nice. A real DOF showcase. The portrait of you by soft Window light also nice. Is that baby yours?

Najibs, the first B&W portrait of your daughter (I assume) is nice. I also like the last shot.

Adam, nice example of that ‘prototype’ lens. Envy you, I see you mention about build quality. Can you elaborate it more with some pictures would be nice. That portrait looks awesome. Agree with Ron that your picture looks great.

Ron, The color out of your images always look great. It is very misleading for potential M9 buyer. Judge VC12 photo from your image, do we really need multi-thousand $$$ lens? And my favorite is Dead fish shot.

Again, To me, there is no better camera or lens, only photographer. We can talk about gear all day, but it really has nothing to do with the photo in the end, IMHO.

And Thanks for comment. That is the scary face she gave me if she is not happy to take photo I wish that Bentley is mine. 35cron V1 is ridicules priced lens 2nd hand. (not worth it IMO.) In Asia/japan, there is a theory that the lens have some fancy element inside. (And the one made in Canada was rated even higher than in Germany.) I bought it at decent price $1200. For the price, it is an outstanding lens. I mentioned at f2, the lens have bigger sharpness cycle than both Zeiss Biogon f2 and VC35 f1.2 at least for my copy tested at infinity. I need one with ‘google’ so that I can put it on my M3. That is the motivation I got this lens, and now I can partially understand the what ‘fussy’ about this lens: it build extremely well as 50cron Rigid and super compact with almost zero distortion after 3M. The lens need to be stop down to f8 to have ‘extreme extreme….’(notice I put two extreme, I think it might be something to do with my hood 12585, which share with 50cron) corner sharpness tight up, but rest of frame is very sharp after f2.8. The biggest complain I have is it will flare easily.

I only use M3 in the past weekend. No new image to share.

An old film shot with M3 and Zeiss sonnar WO.

Ron and Michael, thank you
Adam, beautiful depth of colour to your portrait! I really enjoyed your blog. Would love to have the opportunity to try the 50 Cron AA The rendering of 50 Cron AA at f/2 seems to have better feel and presence than the 50 Lux Asph at f/2. Very interesting!
Ron, great holidays location, and very nice set! I really like the texture of the timber in the last two shots
Michael, magical portrait shot! The 50 Sonnar WO, does render beautifully.

najibs - Nice shots!
Charles - Really liking the noct portraits. And about the presence, only time will tell I suppose.. I'm certain the 50APO will be a popular lens though.

rscheffler - I didn't really have time to do side by side comparisons, but I felt that the prototype lens beats the current 50/2 by quite a bit. As I mentioned in the blog, bokeh was one of the big improvements at f/2, and sharpness went up. It seems easier to focus the prototype then it does to focus the 50lux-asph, so that might be why I feel it's sharper, even when both lenses are at f/2.
BTW, I like your shots! I had a summer home on lake Erie, and when I was going into highschool, my mother felt the need to move me out there as she felt a small town highschool would be "safer" then a city highschool. Really boring 5 years. But the beach was fun in the summer months!

zhangyue - The lens looks cool, there are photos on the internet showing how it looks (sorry didn't think to take any). The lens hood is a pull out type, but it doesn't pull out. What you do is twist the lens hood and it slides up on tracks and locks in. Very natural, very cool. Everything is also super solid, though I find the aperture clicks are still a bit to smooth (IMHO all Leica lenses should have more of a hard click to there aperture rings). This lens as mentioned, seems easier to focus then other lenses, definitely better in the hands then the current 50/2.
And to your other comment. Yes, I agree a great photographer can take amazing shots with any gear, but if some of us aren't great, then gear helps our photos look better

Hope this helps, and thanks for the kind words about the blog, I'm trying to get through all the lenses I've used, and show at least one or two samples, so I can catalogue my experience with various lenses. I'll also be using it for vacations and any event/parties I'm invited to... The fiance thinks it's good to have a reason to take fun photos. If not they just sit on my computer and never see the light of day.

Gary - those do look very nice. RAW or Jpeg?
Michael - thanks for that info and that's quite a different look/rendering compared to digital. CV12 is a good little lens, but I think the CV15 is even better, except the edge color shift is worse, hence I don't use it much on the M9. I'm kind of hoping Leica will soon release that long rumored 14mm... and hoping it will be comparable to the 21 SEM price.
Adam - Lake Erie has a nice, easy feel to it, and the water is reasonably warm in the summer. Drove back part of the way along Hwy 3, the Talbot Trail, and enjoyed passing through the small towns along the way. I also have some childhood memories of family trips to Lake Erie... but I actually like Huron more, or Georgian Bay... photos to come soon.

The beaches at Point Pelee are OK, but I found the various trails more interesting and Parks Canada built a nice boardwalk into the marsh. I think for me it was the highlight of the day..

Some of these could have benefited from a well placed person or two, and I was kind of surprised at how un-busy this national park was on a hot day in the summer - the beaches were practically deserted. It being a Wednesday may have been a reason, which was intentional on my part, not wanting to deal with summer weekend day-trippers.

Thank you, all, for your very kind comments. zhangyue, this is neither me nor my baby. It's my brother with his daughter. :-)

I would love to test the APO 50. Is anyone of you definitely going to upgrade or are you guys waiting for the test results first? I would definitely love to have the lens, it seems however somewhat strange to sell a cheeper and faster lens to acquire a more expensive and slower lens.

Adam, I agree that your blog is very nice. Love the pictures taken with the 50 APO, but I also love your other photos. Do you have some more 50 APO photos to share?

Gary, very nice set with a longer lens (and the M8!).

Ron, the fourth picture of your set is extraordinary. Very well processed and superb DOF!! Wondering how you did that (1.4?) and where you focused?

I find converting to B&W isn't as effortless as it was with the M8. I mainly used Lightroom presets, and a few were with Silver Efex Pro. The X1 is an interesting camera. I'll post some side by side test shots I did against the OM-D w/20/1.7 pancake, soon.

Very nice Ron. I love walking along boardwalks - especially through marshlands. I took this set in JPG. I am struggling a bit to find out whether shooting DNG is worth it for my needs. Contary to what some others report, I find the M8 JPG engine to be fairly good for everyday shooting. I also like the fact that the WB is usually fairly accurate. If I shoot in DNG, the end product is usually better but it takes me so much effort to get to that point. This is especially the case with WB. Do you usually shoot DNG?

Gary - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I shoot DNG. Some of that may simply be out of habit, having always shot RAW since beginning with digital. If I was more disciplined with setting correct WB in-camera, Jpeg would probably work OK many times. There have been scenes where I've been happy with the M9's SOOC results. From working in newspaper prepress, it's abundantly evident to me that a healthy close-enough Jpeg file can take a fair amount of tweaking and still hold up very well. I suppose it depends on what your end needs are. I suspect for most of us it would be fine.

I guess part of the reason I shoot everything RAW is the philosophy that it's like what the negative is in analog photography - the first generation of the image with 'all' of the image data. It can be revisited at a future time and reprocessed, taking advantage of newer software, better technique, etc. The new higher dynamic range sensors may also be a factor if one expects to extract a lot of image content hidden in shadow detail, since there would be a fairly strong advantage in such situations working from a higher than 8 bit file to do so.

But that's tempered by a statistic I think I read from Vincent Laforet - and I'm only paraphrasing and suspect that he made up the figure himself - that 9x percent of the images we shoot we process once and will never touch again... So, is it worth shooting RAW when a good Jpeg would be more than suitable? I don't think there is anything wrong with shooting Jpeg if you're able to keep the file within your own range of acceptable imaging parameters (primarily exposure, WB). Also, my understanding is the Leica compressed DNG file is an 'enhanced' 8 bit file, so I'm uncertain how much more benefit it has over a regular 8 bit file. And I think the M8's only DNG option is compressed?

Hilmar - thanks. The photo of the reeds was at f/2.8, in part because I was too lazy to mount the ND filter. But I also think stopping down a bit can work OK. As for focus... I just set it on a random reed and made a few images when the wind was blowing. I find in this kind of a situation, when I don't necessarily need to have a specific reed stalk in focus, and where there is a lot of subject content at fractionally different focusing distances, that *something* will almost always be in focus.

50AA: I would like to try it. I doubt I will buy it (but I also said that about the 21 Lux, etc...), primarily due to the price. I could see it being very useful though. One aspect of the 50 Lux ASPH I find quite challenging is getting consistently accurate focus on subjects placed considerably off center. I still haven't figured out how much to compensate for the apparent field curvature, and based on the Lux's MTF, it has the typical Leica high speed lens 40 lp/mm mid-zone dip. The 50AA has a much smoother MTF curve, implying it probably has a flatter plane of focus... But this could also be resolved with an M10 if it supports live view and has an EVF option to allow for fine-tuning off center focus. I just experienced this challenge yesterday with the 50 Lux ASPH with subjects placed off center while doing candids in an office environment... and I think for my needs, if I was to spend $7000, I would benefit more from an M10, assuming it has most of the new features I want.

Charles - thanks - another portrait in which you've skillfully made the Nocti shine!

Trying some wave action photos with a slower shutter speed and a 3-stop ND filter. 28 Cron. 1/30 hand held. I left the tripod in the car trunk... it's big and heavy. Somewhat inspired by Boris's Patagonia trip, it might be worth considering one of the lightweight carbon travel tripods for the M9... does anyone here use one, or have a recommendation?

Ron, thanks! These shots really appeal to me. Love the action of the waves contrasting with the drift wood. With regards to tripods, I have a Gitzo GT 0531. Very light, and just fits in a suit case. I would not opt for the Gitzo head as it is expensive, and really is too big for the tripod setup. There are many other options, that are high quality, cost effective, and actually work better. I just bought mine of ebay, for about half the normal price!

Yes, I have the same problem with the 50lux, no matter what I do, when I move the lens from someones eye (center) to anywhere slightly off center, the person is no longer sharp in the eyes. I find that very frustrating, and thats something that doesn't happen with the the 50APO, which in my opinion is a big plus.

BTW, do you guys shoot compressed or uncompressed RAW with the M9? And what's the difference?

Gary - nice shots, both sets!
Ron - love the marshes!

Thanks Adam, that's really good to know about the 50AA. At $4K it might be worth it... still on the fence about $7K.

Uncompressed DNG.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/videos/daniel-video.shtml

At about the 5:50 mark, Leica's Stephan Daniel states the compressed DNG is 8 bit and uncompressed is 14 bit. That seems to be a pretty considerable difference and IMO Leica's compressed DNG seems to defeat the purpose of shooting RAW. This doesn't seem to be like the lossless RAW compression used by Canon to maintain 14 bit integrity.

Thanks Charles!
Gary - very nice - like the sense of movement in the first one and the second location looks like a great place to visit. Somewhere in BC?

Continuing with the moving water theme and 28 Cron:
