Thanks for comment, Charles and airfrogusmc.

Ron, I like Zeiss lens, though I have to agree build quality has room to improve. especially in focus damping and evenness cross the turning range. Optical performance is excellent, there is no dog in their line.

21mm is good at most of the frame start from f2.8. I guess it is enough for me to cover occasionally wide end need, the same philosophy I had with my 90 Elmarit-M. I don't want invest too much on those end for less than 10% of usage. In terms of 21mm 4.5, first, it is too slow, 2nd, from MTF/Datasheet, its performance is poorer and the only advantage I can tell is distortion

as for 35mm, I am pretty sure it is real focus shift, as I have deal with that all the time with my Sonnar No, it doesn't bother me at all. in addition to Focus shift, as for as I know, all the zeiss lens was designed for film use. IKON?, so the flange distance was shorter than leica digital M. Thus, for fast lens in 35 and 50 zone, you may see their front focus, which is very normal. For 21,25,28 35f2.8, it is really hard to detect that with .7M MFD.

zhangyue - I only ever really use a few apertures, I find it easier to adjust shutter speeds, then to have to worry about effecting my DOF using fstops..

So for an f/2 lens, I'll do f/2 and f/5.6 only when shooting portraits, and landscapes f/11 depending on the available light.
For f/1.4 lenses, I'll use f/1.4, f/2 (very seldom if the lens is sharp wide open) and f/5.6 then f/11 for landscapes.

I guess what this ends up meaning is that IF a lens did have focus shift, as long as it's optimized for wide open, I generally never notice it.

To answer your first question, I shot those wide open..

Charles, I tested out the 75 1.4 it seems like a hairs breath away from optimal calibration. Decided to get the 75 summarit, since I found that for portraits .7m was a bit closer then I usually shot anyway (and I found one on getdpi at a fair price). IF I like the 75summarit's FL, and find that I'm using it a lot, I'll seriously consider the upgrade to the 75lux or 75cron (but the cron is impossible to find used at a fair price).

Will test it out at the zoo or something, once it comes in!

Michael, very nicely PP'd B&W shots! Hard to beat the 50 Lux
I originally had the ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar, about 3 copies, and the focus shift drove me crazy, as I could not reliably compensate. Yet I have the 50 Nocti f/1.0, where there is focus shift too, but it is well designed to be used for normal shooting.

Adam, congrats on the 75 Summarit! Looking forward to your shots here

Charles, the ZM Sonnar drove me nuts as well (before I sold off my M9 the first time)... But my copy was optimized for wide open, so 99% of the time, I just shot it that way, though a touch soft, and pretty difficult to focus.

As for the Summarit, it's being sent to me by a getdpi member, so hopefully it gets to me soon... Excited to try, I hope there's no calibration issues, because I was just informed that Leica Singapore cannot calibrate a lens, and it must be sent to Germany (CRAZY), so it's around 6-8 weeks if anything needs adjustments.
Which brings me to my next question, how hard is it to calibrate an M9? Can I even do it myself if needed?

It seems, the 75 summarit and 35/2 biogon are my temp 2 lens kit.. (that is until I make up my mind one what FL I'm going to go with). I'm fine with it though, they both seem like competent lenses, and it closely mirrors my DSLR focal lengths.... Which is interesting for now.

BTW, zhangyue, forgot to mention, but great pictures.. Makes me want a 50lux as well, but the fiance has told me I can't buy one until she decides what my wedding gift is going to be.... As a last resort, I'm guessing it'll be a 50lux?

Best,
Adam

Adam, don't even think about calibrating the M9 yourself IMO. Once you have a set of 3 to 4 lenses, none will line up perfectly, but they can be optimized across all your lenses with Leica service center. The calibrations are non linear on the M9, and may also require tweaking of the lens to bring them into line. Particularly with the Lux's, they may well be within Leica's specs, and even after the fine adjustments the lenses will still be in spec. Having all the lenses lineup focusing accurately WO at all distances, makes for a lot more fun!

Ocean, beautiful shots!

Thanks for comment, Charles, hk, Adam.
Ocean, 2nd and 3rd are outstanding shots. Beautiful.
Gary, the last one stand out.
LL, nice car

I seldom use 50lux doing medium/long range shot, I find many many shots from past weekend miss focused, I did some test today find out it has strong back focus at mid to long distance. I may have to send it to Leica NJ with my M9 together. I need test my other lens as well once I have time to make sure it is not the camera

How you guys test your camera and lens? shot WO? what distance? I usually did a short test at MFD, that is it. It looks like I need spend more time to figure this out.

If you ask me 50lux worth the price? none of the lens should ask this much, not to mention it has this kind of problem out of factory. How much it worth, I would say $3000 is justifiable

Gary, really nice set! Love the first shot abstract composition, and the third shot

LL, nice car and PP'ing

Michael, love that first shot!! I have had my M9 with 50 Lux Asph visit the service center a number of times. The 50 Lux Asph is a lot more critical in having to be matched with the M9 calibration. Even though both can be in spec, there maybe definite tweaking that may be needed. I usually test my lenses, WO, f/2.0, 4.0 and 5.6, at MFD, 1.5m, 10m and infinity. Usually if there any issues, it will show up very quickly. I am fortunate as Camera Clinic in Melbourne, usually turns the re calibrations around in 3 days.

Here is a link to Alfred Weidinger, who has put together a series of beautiful images from Africa that have the rich tonality with the M9M. I am really enjoying these shots, and obviously there is a workflow that he is using that is achieving the tonality.

Great shots guys.. Jealous I'm not out shooting.

I just picked up a 35lux asph, so I can't afford a vacation to test it out
I'll try to take some shots this weekend around my hood. I'm really curious to see if it can justify it's price over the 35/2 ZM which so far has been a pretty good lens.

N according to the post, my 75 should be here early next week.

I have been away for a while and there are tons of great shots!

P529

Ron, image number #1 is superb, you have a very good eye for geometry!

Joe, I really like image #2. Image #1(kitchen shot) in your second set is nicely framed as well!

Dan, love the concert shots!

Charles, portrait #3 really captured the woman's beauty, superb lighting as well!

P530

Luka, a wonderful series, the yellow shot has some interesting dynamics going on...

Edwin, awesome car series, especially #2!

Charles, the Noctilux is singing again! #2 is another super portrait!

P531

Gary, #2 is a nice moment at the beach In your second set, I like #1, nice use of the light!
Rome is such a beautiful city, you will never run out of super images to take!

hk_mtbr, great cycling images, amazing actually! That is a extremely difficult sport to capture even with advanced DSLR AF, and fast glass. Well done! I am an avid cyclist myself too

Charles, looks like the recalibration worked. Did affect focus any where else?

P532

Charles, I bought a 75'lux which is at chez Leica getting cleaned, tuned, and 6bit encoded. I must patiently wait... In the mean time I grabbed a pre-asph 90 summicron

Michael, your 35mm Biogon sure is sharp af F/2.8! I surprised to hear that the 21mm lacks corner sharpness until F/5.6, I had heard that it was a super lens. It sounds like the SE-M is the way to go unless the 'lux is in your budget Your third shot of the little girl painting is super and it has some of the 3d normally associated with Zeiss. In your second set, the lux images are leaping of my monitor!

Ocean, great shots! Any problems travelling in Greece?

Gary, the forum in Roma, nicely done, I especially like #3!

LL, great car, I drive a Golf R myself!

Andrew, thank you for your comments! Congrats on the 75 Lux and 90 Cron PreAsph Two great lenses, and very easy to sell if they don't gel with you.

The 50 Nocti f/1.0 is calibrated to be perfect at f/1.0 at all distances, but between f/2.0 and f/4.0 there is some backfocus at MFD. At 1.5 to 2.0m, the focus falls back within DOF, and fine at infinity. So the lens is great for actual shoots, but just need to aware when nearing MFD at f stops between 2.0 to 4.0, but this is easily compensated for.

Gary, very cool graffiti shots!
