Cool fence shots Ron!

Ryan, nice set with the 75Lux. I think this lens pairs well with a 50Cron and either the 35Lux ASPH v1 or the CV 35/1.2V2. I feel like I need a glass of red wine now

Thanks for the info Ron and Charles The focus on my 35FLE passes infinity. I'll have a look again when I have some time but it looks like I'll have to send it in. We all have to go through the "curse" of Leica huh? My problem is that each time I send it to Leica NJ, I still have to pay for insured shipping, so its not exactly free. I do have a hot pixel on the M9 LCD, maybe I can send the camera in as the same time and let them have a look.

As for the bokeh of the 2 35LuxASPHs, I think its possible to pp and reduce contrast and "clarity" on the FLE to smooth out the bokeh. The bokeh characteristics seems to have the same shape. I'll give it a try and see. And on the 35Lux ASPH v1, I'm sure with some localized pp and contrast boost, one could sharpen up the plane of focus when shot wide open.

Ryan, I bought an older copy of the ZM21 2.8 with the 50mm framelines. 21mm seems to be a "classic" focal length on the Leica RF and 24 was too close to the 28 or 35 for me. I really wanted the 21 SEM but its almost 3x the price of the Zeiss so I will use the ZM for now. If you shoot wide open, then the 21SE is better, if you shoot at f5.6 to f8, the ZM 21 2.8 is superb, rivaling the 21SEM. I do like the feel of my Leica lenses better. More heft. The ZM feels cheap in comparison. The focus mechanism seems to have a bit of play and wobble on mine. If you don't need to shoot f/1.4 with the 21 or 24, I suggest that the SEMs will be better, size, etc.

Ryan - nice pics! That 75 lux looks so sweet. Unfortunately a little pricey for me though... Keep posting pics and maybe I can talk myself into it - as I do with many lenses.

Joakim: Like #1&2 the best. The tone of first one is very nice.
Joe: I prefer 35Lux fle from your sample here. But I know it is subject matters and have to say that not always want contrast and sharp in the image. either lens will be a ultimate one lens M9 kit, unfortunately, I have none Nice images from CV35)
Ryan, I agree with the rendering of 75lux. Especially first one show that and last one is very beautiful too.

As for 75lux, I know you and Charles have experience of 85mm lens from Canikon and Zeiss. Any comment about them compare to to other 85mm fast glass? I feel modern Nikon and Zeiss P85 can be as sharp with pretty Bokeh as well based on my experience.

Ryan, those look really nice!

Tough call on the wide lens options you listed... I agree with Joe, the ZM21 is really nice, especially stopped down and has zero CA. I had the chance to try the 24 Elmar briefly and was very impressed with it and I think you'll like it, even if it's not as fast as a Lux or Cron. It's already great wide open and stopping down brings little peripheral sharpness improvement and just cleans up the slight vignetting. As Joakim and Boris have shown here over the past while, it's an excellent lens.

For me personally, I would go with the 21 SEM, though I have yet to try one. It appears to have the 24 elmar performance and is more compact than the ZM. And as a 21 Lux owner - I would still find use for the SEM, crazy as it would seem to own two 21s. The 21 Lux is a great lens wide open and has pretty strong vignetting that adds to its character. But I find if stopped down around 2.8-4, it can have a certain degree of nervousness in the outer zones. My feeling is it's a lens to use at f/1.4 or f/2 (where it sharpness up centrally and vignetting is drastically reduced), or at f/8 or f/11 for max depth of field. In contrast, the SEM, and what I saw in the Elmar - these appear to let you shoot from wide open without as much of a performance penalty. They seem to be very even keeled. The 21 Lux is more dual personality, which from what I'm reading, can be the case with the Lux lenses. No idea about the 24 Lux - whether or not it has much change of personality as it's stopped down.

Joe - yes, that sucks. From my experience working in retail, talking to various vendors, etc., almost none ship insured and take that risk. But then, they're dealing in huge volumes and a loss or two isn't a big hit, unlike for us where loss of a $5k lens would be extremely upsetting... I my impression is the infinity tuning for the fast lenses is very subtle. After the first tune of the 50 Lux by Leica, I had the opposite problem where it wouldn't reach infinity. Now after the second try, it seems to be fine. Though as Charles hinted, my copy might now have slight back focus at mid distances.

These CV images look very nice. What aperture was the first one and which lens coding are you using?

Michael, I can't speak for Charles or Ryan, but I'm still struggling a bit with 90mm (Summarit) on my M9. The latest Leica tuning is still fractionally off with the 90, which causes focus consistency issues at wider apertures. I still use my Canon stuff to cover the telephoto end of the spectrum. For my applications at least, this is where I find AF to be the greatest benefit, with lenses like the 85L... But the 75 Lux does look great. I see similarities to the 50 Lux, and at least for me, I think the 50 makes more sense for the M9 and the way I use it.

Ron, its not crazy to own more than one 21mm Leica lens and you still have the ZM21 right?

Same reason I want a 35/1.4 and also a slower and lighter one. I like the weight of the CV 35/2.5 at approx 140g. After using this lens, all my Leica lenses feel heavy. It renders very close to the 35CronIV which I used to have. Both of these older designs are not as sharp or can't resolve as well as the 35 Lux/Cron ASPH but I do like the gentle look of the CV 35/2.5. It needs very little pp, files are slightly to the cooler tones as in many CV lenses, but I do like the color on this lens. The CV does exhibit visible distortion. My biggest gripe with the CV 35/2.5 is (i) it only resolves well at the center and doesn't really improve until you stop down to f/5.6 -f/8 (ii) using hyperfocal focusing, the sharpness is uneven across the field on my copy. I'll still keep this lens, such a good value. The first shot was f/8 @ ISO160. Second shot was wide open f/2.5

I coded as 35mm tri-elmar and it works fine. I used Carsten's code for the 35Summarit but when I put the lens on it came up as tri-elmar. Could not be bothered for now. I tried the 35CronIV profile and could see a slight magenta cast on the left side.

My 35Lux FLE seems to focus spot on up close, I might just leave it as it is as I'm worried that sending it back to Leica will create other problems with focus up close. Will do some more controlled test later this week when I have some time.

Just upgraded to LR4, still getting used to the new exposure sliders. Here's another with the CV 35/2.5 @ f/8 ISO160.

Thanks for the comments all

I have used the Zeiss 85 f/1.4 and both the Nikon 85 f/1.4D and 85 f/1.4G as well as the Sigma 85. I would say the Leica is closest in character to the Zeiss. The Leica is not as sharp dead center or at the edges as the 85 f/1.4G (which is the sharpest of the three in my experience). Wide open it is not as contrasty as the G. Af f/2 as far as sharpness goes the 75 Lux and Nikon 85 f/1.4G would be very close. Stopped down to f/2.8 I would say the Leica 75 Lux combined with the M9 is sharper (by a good amount) than the Nikon 85 f/1.4G from edge to edge.

Now, sharpness isn't everything, and certainly isn't what the 75 Lux is about. The way the lens draws, especially for portraits, is just beautiful. The transition to the oof areas is just superb. The bokeh on the 85 f/1.4G for the most part was great, the 75 Lux is far smoother. The 85G in certain situations could get very harsh, I haven't seen that with the 75 Lux.

Another favorite of this lens is the .75 MFD, you can get in close. My third shot up above wasn't even minimum distance and I didn't crop. You can get in close. It has the third highest magnification of all Leica lenses behind the 90 Macro and 75 Cron (barely - .7 vs .75)

A lot of people say that the 75 Lux is a very difficult lens to focus, I haven't really felt that way. My lens is 100% dead on calibration wise and I have a 1.15 mag with diopter that ends up being plenty for me. No joke, I have been more accurate with the 75 Lux than some of my 85 f/1.4 lenses I have owned in the past. Like Ron, I had big problems focusing the 90 Summarit for some reason. It was perfectly calibrated to my camera, I just came away with a ton of oof shots. The 90 Elmarit-M was much better for me, but I didn't like the rendering of that lens for portraits.

Joe, Ron, Charles, Ryan, Michael - thank you for the comments!

Ryan, nice portraits with the 75 Lux.
Joe, the CV 25/2.5 looks like a good lens.

When does spring start here? Well normally later but we have had a really short winter this year and now that the temperature has climbed some the last few days hopefully it has just started

When it comes to wide lenses I am of course biased but I must say that with the relatively small size and light weight the 24 Elmar is a fun lens to use and the IQ doesn't hurt either . I'm using it together with a external view finder (Voigtlander 25mm) which is really helpful for me when composing a photo.

Speaking of LR4, I was going first to work on my first photo in my previous set in both PS and LR but decided to only process it in LR4. The new way to work with exposure and related settings takes some getting used to but it feels like it is an improvement over LR3 and I am impressed whit what I was able to do only in LR4 with that photo. The program can be quite slow sometimes compared to the previous version but hopefully they will sort it out soon.

Ryan, thanks Love the magic in your shots with the 75 Lux, particularly the last shot!! The more I use the 75 Lux, the more I learn about its different personalities. It is an amazing lens!!!

Joe, very nice shots with the CV 35 Skopar Love the last shot! I agree sharpness is not everything, and do really like the creamy look, yet in the detail is all there and can always be brought out with PP'ing. Ron, was right, that I was eluding that the 35 Lux FLE, may also be back focusing at mid-far distances too.

I have almost relegated C1 Pro 6.3.3 now for LR4. Much better workflow and I am really liking the output now from LR4. I have had no problems with speed yet, and I do run both LR4 and CS5 at the same time. I have had more problems with slowness with C1 Pro 6.3.3. I do find that the adjustments sliders have been redesigned, and for example the clarity slider works very different now, and can be easily used at its full setting for different effects.

Michael, I have had the 85L, 85LII and ZE 85/1.4 and ZE 100MP. The ZE 100MP is an amazing lens, but I don't like too much for portraits. Beautiful lens for landscapes though. The 85 LII is again another beautiful lens for portraits. It is a beast of a lens, and very slow AF even with vII. The 85LII with the 5DII, I always had marginal OOF issues, even with the 5DII calibrated as I did with the 50L. Great lenses in their own right, but if the point of focus is not on the eye or face, then IMO the shot becomes very ordinary. The ZE 85/1.4 was an interesting lens. I don't really know if I liked it, but it was a lot more softer in rendering that the ZE 100MP. My favourite lenses for portraits are the 75 Lux and 90 Cron AA. These lenses are so unique and different to anything I have used before, so I don't really compare. The closest lens would the 85LII when the focus was spot on.

Ron, I do agree the 21 SEM, from the examples I have seen is great lens, and relatively cost effective. Personally I love the 24 Lux, as it is gentler in rendering than the 35 Lux FLE, and yet closed down it behaves very much like the 28 Cron, with the edge taken off.

Dan, great stage capture!!!

Thrice - Great stage shot....razor sharp. Only the 50 Lux!

vovkinson - nice shots, particularly #3, but that jpg compression is horrible. where are these coming from?

Here is a re-ppd 75 Lux

75 Lux wide open

I almost forgot, have a 35 Nokton II I like as well

And back on LR4...the B/W processing is MUCH improved over LR3. I solely used Nik Silver Efex with LR3....LR4 is good enough where I don't need to anymore.

Ryan, nice work on the 75Lux. Also like the re'pp #1 shot.

Agreed - LR4 is an improvement. BW white presets are pretty good as well. Only problem is that it slows down the performance on my computer, very noticeable.

Here's an attempt with LR4. M9 CV 35/2.5 @ f/8

I don't know. I just PP'd in CS5 (RAW file) , re-sized it in CS5 in sRGB.
Not sure if it's the right workflow. I guess it's too saturated like Disneyland ?

Thanks for the info Joe. Interesting compositions in the last couple images, love the people placement and layers of the last one! Your CV35 summary seems to match what I've seen in full-rez samples from it on the M9. I'm kind of tempted by the CV21 as an option for the GXR because it's so small, and relatively inexpensive.

Every CV lens I've used so far, other than the 12 & 15, seems to fall into the general description of sharp in the center with the corners taking some time to catch up. Some more so than others. The 35 f/1.2II is technically probably the best CV in my collection, but even with it, corners take some time. At the other end of the spectrum is the 40 f/1.4 with huge field curvature, but I really like its character for people photos, especially on the GXR as a short portrait lens. Even the 50 f/1.5 has a noticeable central sweet spot. It would seem the aim of Cosina has been to offer a line with traditional characteristics, less cutting edge, and leave most of the high performance to Leica.

You're right - I still have the ZM21. I held onto it in part because I wanted to see if it was better on the GXR than the 5N, which I think it is. I'll probably keep it until I get the 21 SEM, which I haven't ordered - not really in a rush. The focus action on all my ZM are good, with a smooth, somewhat effortless, though not too light feel.

Ryan - very beautiful set! Perhaps a reason you're having better luck with the 75 Lux is its very long focus throw? That's about my only complaint about the 90 Summarit. Just a tiny nudge will shift the focus too much. I thought my copy was pretty much perfect on my M9 until the two recent rounds of tuning the M9 to the 50 Lux. The first time back (when I didn't send the 90 along), the focus was off. Now it seems closer, but I'm having difficulty determining if it's the calibration or my eyes. Even with a diopter and the 1.4x I'm not getting consistent focus placement. I even tried stacking a Canon 2x on top of the Leica 1.4x for some tests! I'm thinking it might be my eyes because the rangefinder patch doesn't pop when it's perfectly aligned... But then, careful observation with the magnifier, I'm suspicious that the vertical alignment seems to be very slightly off. It might be just enough to keep the alignment from popping when it's perfect. And I'm starting to give the Walter RX eyepiece some serious thought…

Very nice Dan!

vovkinson - great feel to those. I agree with Ryan, there's something with the compression of the first and third images. You can see a lot of artifacts around fine details, which is causing loss of apparent sharpness in the first image. Maybe it's something to do with smugmug? Separate from that, which lens/camera did you use?

Boris, I think both are sharp into the corners on FF pretty much from wide open, so long as you get a good copy. The problem is that at least with the 15, it has very strong vignetting on the M9, which the new firmware seems to do a pretty good job with, though still leaves some residual color. If you want perfection you'll have to use Cornerfix. And, removing so much corner vignetting increases the noise, which becomes more problematic at higher ISOs, at which point I believe the M9 actually reduces corner correction, so you see more false color in those images. The 12mm is better than the 15 in terms of vignetting and color shift. But the Voigtlanders are very attractively priced, and perform well on some of the APS-C mirrorless cameras, such as the 5N and GXR... it will be interesting to see if Leica releases the rumored 14mm. It will certainly be a more retrofocal design, made specifically for digital. If it's in the ballpark of the 18 and 21 SEMs, it will be a worthwhile consideration, IMO.

If you're interested in the 12 or 15, I would suggest reading this blog post by Jeff Hapeman

He also has some full rez images available on Flickr with these and other CV and Leica lenses. Such as in this Voigtlander collection.

Charles, love all of your shots from Eagle's Nest and thanks for your commentary on the 28 Cron and 24 Lux.
Rsolti, very nice 75 Lux series, I love the road picture. I was about to say that it reminded me of Savannah GA when I noticed that is your hometown on your profile. Spent some time there with my wife, very nice town.
Gary, I like the lockers. Sometimes the ordinary subjects turn out to be interesting.
Rsolti, OK. Enough 75 Lux shots. Don't tempt me.
Zhangyue, I love the shot of your son reaching for the door.
Charles, Wonderful portrait from Bali. And for cryin' out loud... more 75 Lux shots. What are you guys trying to do?
Joakim, Indeed impressive DR on that last one.
Rsolti, nice portraits, again with that stupid 75 Lux.
Thrice, nice stage shot with the 50 Lux. Looks very clean.
Vovkinson, like the train.
Edwin, Nice catch! I also like the candid pics much more than posed. It's difficult to catch just the right moment though (as you have here).

I now have the CV28 Ultron, 50 Lux ASPH, and 90 Cron Pre-ASPH. Nice setup for now, I think, despite all of your attempts to get me to add a 75 Lux to the kit ;-) The 50 Lux seems to focus quite accurately. The 90 Cron front focuses a bit. In my earlier post the castle and the beach were the 50Lux (the later with three stops of ND filter). The lizard was the 90 Cron.
