Welcome back Luka and Joe. Fantastic shots from you both. Luka, like your last installment of the frozen series.

Talk about "frozen"!! I've been in Italy for the past six weeks, and I almost came to Stockholm last weekend, till the "weather" happened. After all was said and done, we got about 3.5 feet of snow in central Italy. Sheesh. Can't wait to get back to Calif.

Luka, great "frozen" series! Love the magic with the 50 Lux in shots #2 and 4
Joe, nice shots, obviously waiting to be "bitten" by the Nocti bug I am not game to even try the lens!!

Seems like all the snow is in Europe this winter. This month we've had exactly zero so far... and very little last month. Seems Gary in Calgary has had a bit more. Nice light, particularly in the first one Gary.

Joe, interesting street set. How was the staff at the Leica store? Pretty laid back and let you play? Would have been nice to see such items at the Munich store when I was there back in December... Forget about the Nocti - you can get the SLR Magic for $4288 instead. Anyone here interested in that lens? From the images posted so far, it looks promising, though it's huge. And at that price one could get a 50 Lux ASPH... a stop slower but a lot smaller.

Luka, good to see you back, I really like the 28 Cron images from this series. It's still on my list of wants.

dgenx24, love the last one!

The SLR Magic looks to be a great lens so far. The shots I have seen Ashwin taken with the SLR Magic are quite amazing. The 50 FL is my favourite, so I am interested not so much for the low light, but the rendering style, which would set is apart as a specialty lens. I had the CV 50 1.1, and we never gelled. Still the 50 Lux Asph is my favourite

Gary, nice shot! Hard to beat the ZM 50 Planar

I might be interested in the SLR Magic. As Charles mentioned, the special look of that lens is appealing. However, even $ 4288 is a lot of money and I love my Summilux 50, too. It is more likely I'm going to pass on this lens.

Another shot from Thailand which I took with the M9 and the Summilux 35 ASPH:

Thanks Ajay, Charles, Ron, dgenx24

Nice shots Gary and seekuh!

I agree, all the snow moved across the pond this year .. although winter's not over yet

Ron, this was Leica store in Kuala Lumpur. Pretty laid back and friendly staff and they let us try every lens in store, but it was a long holiday weekend and it was relatively quiet. The only reason I did not buy the 21SE was that prices in Asia seem to be significantly higher than back here. Luckily for me the Nocti was out of stock, else that would have been a harder decision .

As for the SLR magic, I do like the look and sharpness of the images, just that I hesitate to pay over $4k for a relatively new company with no track record, but I'm sure many others who lust after the 0.95 will have no qualms getting one. At $4k, I'll buy another 50Lux ASPH first. At $3k, then its another story.

Back to pics, 35Lux ASPH

seekuh: I like this portrait very much. a very natural, cute small girl.
Joe: I like the #1 the best.

BTW, question for people to discuss in this thread:

How is the CCD sensor compare to your Nikon and Canon's offer in your opinion? I always feel color need to be tweaked to looks alright In that sense Canikon's file are much easy to deal with, and no need for tweak color individually.

The hue is very hard to tweak usually and I don't want to touch it if it is unnecessary. I almost can see its signature (yellowish, Greyish, greenish, reddish) from its pictures showing anywhere. KR's Yosemite pic (don't laugh, just want pick some easy find ones to illustrat) even in THORSTEN OVERGAARD's leica review, even though Lots of pictures I love but some of his picture suffered as well)

I definitely see some special character from its AA free CCD sensor. Detail with noise create a special feeling sometimes but not always and it is very good for BW picture. Correct exposure will help in some sense but is that telling me that Dynamic range lacking? The shadow can be pull back a lot but also some noise and
artificial color.....

Is that means Canikon have done a lot of more homework to stabilize the sensor performance and make accurate color in house than leica does? Leica file require its shooter do all the color/hue/saturation INDIVIDUALLY

Just want throw a topic to discuss in this thread if people don't mind.

Thanks.

Are the Canon and Nikon files more accurate in reality, or more accurate to our perception of reality? I think that's a very important distinction and one that Kodak and Fuji spent a lot of time on as well with their various film emulsions. Kodak Gold was not an accurate emulsion, but it was what the average photographer wanted to see in their photos - vibrant, dramatic colors. I guess Velvia also falls into this category. On the other hand Ektachrome 64 Professional was, according to Kodak, " the standard of the industry for use in the studio or under controlled daylight conditions. Its rich, natural color and soft highlight contrast are ideal for food, fashion, and product advertising."

I'm not sure whether I mentioned this in our PM conversation or here earlier, but I really feel that the M9's images are 'old school' digital that require a lot more involvement by the photographer to optimize. That's not to say the out of camera files are bad, but like any digital camera, in 98% of cases, can be further optimized. It does seem that the M9 files benefit more from those with deeper post production experience/capability.

My feeling is that Canon and/or Nikon had a change in philosophy for their default camera settings back around 2004-5 away from creating the technically most flexible files for post, to creating the most visually pleasing files without need for post. Naturally, for this to happen, Canon and Nikon had to make certain decisions for us about color, saturation, contrast, sharpening, noise reduction, etc.. And for 95% of the DSLR market, it's likely the best route because it creates the most pleasing out of the box images.

Maybe Luka will chime in, since I seem to recall him stating that the M9 has very good color separation, or something along those lines.

I use the M9 alongside the Canon 1DIV and/or 1DIII, and I clearly see a difference in the files when browsing through Lightroom. I don't know how much of this is due to the cameras/lenses/sensors or Adobe's profiles for each. On the Canons, I only use Canon lenses, so maybe that's one problem . On the M9 I use Leica, Voigtlander and Zeiss lenses. A difference I see is that the M9 files are generally richer and deeper. The Canon files seem a bit muted and digitally massaged in comparison. In terms of color, the M9 does render skin tones more harshly. Blotchy skin tone becomes much more apparent, with stronger separation of yellowish from reddish tones. But if you very carefully look at a person's skin tone, you will generally see that it is indeed splotchy. As I suggested in the PM, this can be somewhat resolved by shifting red hues slightly yellowish and orange/yellow hues slightly reddish. It also helps to select a good white balance.

Ron,

Thanks for your feedback. It is your PM make me rethink about the way I look and treat Leica file. I have to agree this is not the camera just shot and adjust white balance and tweak clarity or contrast and can get decent results. The thing even more complicated is there is no fixed profile to have it works every time under different light condition. Or.. Do we?

For Canon and Nikon, you will benefit from PP skill, but you could also leave them as is to get accept results. but Leica's file, it deserve your attention to make them just looks acceptably good. I agree its potential as I can see total different output result from different photographer. So, in that sense, I can echo your statement 'benefit more from those with deeper post production experience/capability. '

I have to agree with the reality and pleasing of the RAW file. Canikon's file looks polished and pleasing almost to the boring side. (a little strong here. at the end of day, it is still photographer but not any gear.) and well treated M9 files seems has some special quality there as so many talented photographers include yourself shown here.

It is a challenge to me but also offer a path to improve myself for the PP skill.

I know this is an image thread, hope you guys do not mind for a little discuss on this topic and hopefully it will benefit more people :-)

Joe, very nice street set! I really like the composition of #1
zhangyue, nice series! Nice portrait with the Sonnar.
Paul, nice PP'ing and shots

zhangyue, there has been considerable discussion relating to the "unPP'd" nature of the M9 files. The files are very raw, and have amazing qualities after PP'ing. Depending on your style and workflow, the DNG files are very malleable, and can take on your personal style following a consistent workflow. Personally I prefer C1 Pro 6.3.3 for PP'ing DNG files into CS5 Lab mode, for the majority of my shots. Skin tones are much better, and there is not the turquoise tinge present either. For high ISO shots, low light shots, I prefer CS5 as the noise reduction is much superior. In the LUF, there is a number of threads on how to PP high ISO shots, and be able to use consistently ISO of 1600 for low light shooting. For printing, I have had no problems printing shots even with ISO of 1250 to 2500, with good quality lighting. There is discussion by Thorsten also relating to setting the WB manually to 3200K for night shots, as this assists with maintaining a consistent look throughout your shots.

Charles, Thank you for your feedback, I do have C1 pro6.2 but really have no energy to invest into that anymore, I will stick with LR for the time being and try to improve my PP skill based on it. I will check those thread later on to gain some more experience on it. I have found that high ISO short from Leica is usable for what I am doing (environment family portrait ). The key is correct exposure first. or even over exposure a little sometimes, but this apply to any digital file from my experience even low light king D700/D3s

I seems remember Luka has mentioned edit in LAB mode and multi-stage sharpening for web display. Never tried it, that will be my next step to see the difference by myself. Based on what I see from him, I should try it

Some spring shot sonnar wide open.

And my weekend life First two are sonnar, last three are VC351.2MKI. Some of them are ISO1250 shots.

zhangyue, these shots are superb! I particularly like #1, 5 and 7
I am completely with you on getting the right exposure. The M9 does not do well with blown highlights, yet the shadows have a lot of latitude to work with. There is a lot of discussion of exposing to the right, but IMO I think it is good to mindful of it, but getting the right exposure is more important. Also as Ron, has suggested, the quality of lighting for low light is more important than just the ISO setting.
Luka's previous work and posts on downsizing are amazingly instructive and helpful. There is great stuff previously posted with various settings outlined by Luka.
In Lab mode, there is a whole world of adjustments that are available that do work very differently. These can simplified into scripts, so there does not have to be much time spent in front of the computer.
