KL, cool composition!

Very quiet in here lately. I just received my Nokton 35/1.2 ASPH V2 . Hopefully get to use it over the weekend.

Well, I'm out of town with limited internet access. But here are a bunch of CV35 f/1.2 II shots of an old GMC truck I drove past on a rural Wisconsin road... I think most of these were shot at around f/2. Don't ask my why f/2 instead of 1.2 or 1.4... though some might be at 1.4. I don't remember.

BTW, I have in my possession a 90 Summarit, and have been using it a fair amount the last few days. Trying to get a feel for the focus, which certainly requires more patience and attention than shorter lenses, but so far the results look very nice. My first Leica lens in about 20 years! Ironically, one of those from 20 years ago was a 90 f/2.8 that I used on an M3...

KL and Ron, thanks guys, much appreciated
Ron, really neat shots of the truck! The last two shots are my favourites Also congrats on the 90 Summarit. I really think the 90 Summarit is better than the Elmarit IMO from the shots I have seen.

I just got a Leica M8U and Zeiss 35/2 a few days ago. This is my first rangefinder and I really like it so far. It's very different. The M8U will be going to New Jersey soon for the red pixel/red line fix, but here is one from tonight with the combo.

Thank you Charles, Ron and Joe

Charles, that cat image is amazing.
Ron, I really like your CV35 images a lot. I have version 1 of this lens but have not tried it on the M2 yet, only on the Nex.
Joe, very nice black and white work as always. The second shot is my favorite.

Ron, how do you like the new Nokton 35 ? Like #1,#3 and #6.

I think it's a good lens. I haven't used it all that much so far to get a great feeling for its subtler qualities. What I really need to do is shoot the exact scenes side by side with my ZM35C to see how it compares with what I'm used to with the Zeiss in terms of color, contrast, etc. I've used it more for lower light situations rather than walk around type photos where I prefer to bring the Zeiss because it's so much smaller and I usually shoot somewhat stopped down, negating the need for a super fast lens. What I've noticed so far is that the CV appears to have a slightly curved plane of focus, with focus shifting slightly towards infinity towards the edges. This has made wide open and near wide open off-center compositions a bit of a challenge in that there is usually a touch of back focus evident. As with many fast lenses on digital, there is LoCA (I think that's the right term) where there is some green fringing in out of focus higher contrast transitions to one side of the plane of focus and magenta to the other side at wider apertures. I've also noticed some purple fringing at transitions with extreme brightness. I haven't notice any focus shift issues as it's stopped down, but I also haven't really looked for this. The focusing ring of my copy could also be smoother. Focus from infinity towards minimum distance is no problem and smooth, but the focus binds slightly as I focus towards infinity. I take it this is due to the lens pushing against the camera's rangefinder coupling, and for some reason causes more resistance than I notice with any other lens I use with the M9. It's interesting now that I finally have a Leica lens of my own (the 90 Summarit) and while I've only had it a short time, I'm beginning to think there maybe is something to the claim of 'Leica colors' made by others. Just like the Zeiss lenses have certain characteristics too. And in this respect, I suspect the CV35 f/1.2II shares some CV characteristics with the other CV lenses I own (15 & 75 f/1.8). It's difficult to put a finger on it for specifics. At least compared to the Zeiss lenses, the CV seems to be a bit gentler and softer in terms of contrast and color. What I've noticed with the Summarit is rich colors that I feel the CV doesn't quite match. It would be interesting to compare it against a 35 Lux ASPH or ASPH FLE, not just in terms of sharpness, but also color and contrast. Maybe it will be splitting hairs... But whatever the case, I still think the CV is a fine lens in its own right and certainly a pretty good value compared to most other 35mm f/1.4 lenses on the market. I think the only cheaper options are the CV 35 f/1.4 (a non-aspherical lens with plenty of old school character - i.e. not so sharp wide open and with focus shift) and the Samyang for SLRs.

While it's not a direct comparison, it would be interesting to get your opinion on how you feel the CV 35 f/1.2II compares against the 50 Lux you just got.

Ron

Ron, excellent synopsis I do agree there are intangibles, such as colour, contrast and unique rendering with the Leica glass, but of course at a price which may not suit.
dgenx24, very nice set! I really like the way the 75 Summarit renders.
