As many of you know, SoCal suffered from some of the most disastrous fires in their history. My brother lives in Malibu and by his equipping his house with a sprinkler system, owning a military surplus fire truck (I am not joking) and dumb luck his house survived but many many others in his neighbourhood are gone.
A couple of days ago was the first time I was able to get over there and visit with him, while surveying what was left. A drive that normally takes an hour tops from my home took three hours as I had to go the back way through the San Fernando valley and through numerous canyon roads to get across to his home. All of which had work crews with one lane only flow in many places.
These pics were taken with a Leica MD-a, Wtulens 17mm f16 (but I think it is more like f22) and Kentmere 400.
The Wtulens is made from recycled Fuji Quicksnap disposable camera lenses - two are used. I like it for specific purposes as it is sharp in the middle, then smears out and vignettes. This trip IMO fit its purpose.
I also took a couple of other cameras with normal 'perfect' lenses, those pics are in the process of getting developed.

Stunning documentary work. I was in Santa Monica early that week and flew out of LAX early afternoon on 1/14 (the start of the winds and fires) to head back to NorCal. There was some smoke. Who knew what would ultimately transpire overnight, and into Weds.

I don’t know if it’s gas or what….but the steel rim images I’ve seen in the past couple of weeks have really intrigued me. The look/rendering of this image is magical. It looks so good. I’m used to seeing soft focus, super glow, but this doesn’t have that typical look I expect yet does have a soft, classic rendering. Beautiful woman doesn’t hurt either

I couldn’t agree more, and I was won over. Collected my SR reissue today. Manufacture date of 1/7/25. It’s just lovely. This is a quick snap after I unboxed it.

First of all thank you. The SSR is a lens that I am still studying and learning to use. The most glow will come on wide open at f1.4 in bright scenes. In the shade, it is less prominent but gives a beautiful classic rendering. At F1.7 it tames the glow and keeps it in check. I had the voigtlander 35mm f1.4 classic and while that lens glows a bit, it is just different. The glow of the SSR is truly magical as well as its flair when it catches that perfect side light.
