...I remember watching a video by Jay Maisel, a famous NYC street photographer, and he talked ad nauseam about the importance of gesture… I think gesture is primarily what draws a viewer into the scene, without the photographer needing to be a part of the action.

A gesture can be a look someone’s giving someone else, a turn of the head, or the angle of someone’s arm… it can even be the shape of a tree branch or some other inanimate object. I try (and mostly fail) to capture some sort of gesture in as many of my images as I

Thanks Ben, for the thoughtful statement. You're right about gesture. Two things came to mind when I read your post.

The first was a book by Nicolaides: The Natural Way to Draw, which is probably the best book to use when you're learning to draw by yourself. Nicolaides has you start with exercises for two types of drawing, contour and gesture. You make the contour drawings by looking at a point on the subject, say on the shoulder of a person (or of a point on a still life) and continue to draw the contour without looking at your paper; so that you follow the edge of the form. You make a gesture drawing by feeling the movement of the whole: by not drawing what the subject looks like, but what it is doing.

The second thing I thought about is a photograph by Robert Frank, called London Hearse, which you can see here: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1060983/london-street-photograph-frank-robert/?carousel-image=2009CA1439. With the fog and the hearse, it's a subtractive approach, probably enhanced in the printing, which you can also see in the work of Ralph Gibson.

I was ponderously trying to extend the concept of different types of "engagement," and should have written about "engaging the form." which can be expressed as gesture.

Thanks Dude!

I just ran the NYC Marathon- We got into town early and I just brought my M11m and 28 Cron (had my 50 lux but wasn't feeling it). The plan was to shoot at 5.6 ish most of the time.

I really like the results. I shot almost 1000 photos with the M11m. Most ever with an M camera on a trip by a drastic margin. NYC is just such an amazing place.

Funny thing is- I never noticed the kid with the fake gun until I saw this picture my wife took. You can sort of see me in front of the car- My son is in the NFL hat-

Today I had the world's greatest and longest running military production aircraft flying around my house. I am a wee bit bias since I spent 24 years of my life working and flying around the world on them. What a ride...

This was with the longest lens I own and wish I could have gotten closer...
