Beautiful Steve! I speak relatively good Italian thanks to my mother being from Serrastretta! This woman would have me engaged instantly!
The colors are so wonderful! The warmth of the stone and the vibrance of her accoutrements make it pop!
Super!
Dan

Grazie mille Dan!

Did you keep your Italian citizenship? If not you should apply for your Italian passport. You were likely born a citizen under Italian law, and are eligible for a passport. Lots of benefits to having an EU passport these days. In our family we keep this active for all generations. My Grandchildren all have their Italian citizenship documented and have passports. That is why we spend a Month in Italy every Summer, and the kids all go to Italian Summer School in Florence.

YES....I have had my citizenship since the 1950's. And it became a plus when I left my military obligation for federal service for 40years!
Grazie fratello!

Yes, they're great; but which ones do you use? I particularly like the Elite Kodak Portra 800 NB, as in the image below.

That's very nice Mitch! The Elite Portra was my first, inspired by images like yours, and I've been using it rather often. Haven't done much with the esoteric B&W pack, yet.

Not sure whether they can give the type of "expressionist" look that I often want for B&W, which may be more easily achieved with Nik plugins. Actually, I've been thinking that, shooting digital, there has to be a reason why a particular photo should be B&W or why it should be color — and started a thread on this a few weeks ago.

Today, I read the following New York Times article, with images by Daniel Berehulak, a Times staff photographer. The article ("The Poet Who Commands a Rebel Army") is about Myanmar and interesting in itself, and the photographs have color that I really like. The following is a "gift link" that I think should work here:
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/16/world/asia/myanmar-poet-ko-maung-saungkha.html?unlocked_article_code=1.8E0.IAUJ.CW8uy49tswA6&smid=url-share

Daniel Berehulak is worth studying. His Instagram has a great B&W portrait of Zelensky. On p.2421 #8, someone asked whether an image of an automobile should be B&W and color. My feeling was that the color one in this particular case is much better, but most people replying — I think there were only four — preferred the B&W, which I thought was much blander than the color one. Had it been done with more contrast or using some darker tones for the shadow, porhaps it could have been as good as the color one. But this would require a deeper discussion than would be suitable for this image thread; so, I suppose all I want to raise is the issue that one needs a justifiable intent for making an image color or B&W.

Thanks for the link and things to read, look at, and think about, Mitch. Much appreciated.

For me, I feel it is easier to envision a B+W capture when it is being made than after the fact. In post it often feels like I'm rescuing an image. Maybe I was more aware of what I was doing when I shot film. You know what film is in there and what it will produce and had to work with those capabilities and limitations.

Digital colour on the other hand feels like too much latitude and too many options.

I thought of making the 'hoops' image above B+W but for me the feeling I had that evening was "this is a typical Vancouver warm summer evening with the smell of the bay and heat and volleyball players kicking up dust that gets in your eyes two blocks away" and that doesn't really come out in b+w in that one, not that it's that strong an image.

BTW I saw your thread and found it interesting. I will be lurking a lot less going forward.

One thing i like about street photography is that mid day high contrast light which is horrible or most types of photography can be an advantage when shooting for shadows and gestures like in this shot. This means I can shoot all day in all light conditions rather than just the golden hours.

I was just looking at that those Cobalt profiles, some of them look really nice. Considering the Monochrom pack

Steve,
Great use of light, I don’t get out mid-day enough…too hot around here

Thank you very much, Dan for your kind words. She is my daughter, usually a reluctant subject and already fed up with my constantly trying out lenses and cameras all the time :-)

Well tell her she is a very beautiful young woman who photographs very well! She is also a dinosaur, like myself, who loves to read from a periodical and books.
Nothing like the smell of fresh paper in a book! Besides I enjoy making comments in the margins of my readings to remind me of something!
Again WELL DONE!

Mechanics are becoming a lost art!
This guy looks like a good one and he doesn't have to worry about "chains" grabbing his beard!
Great image Tim!
