In a trivial sense, all photos are seen as individual units, but imagine going to the photo exhibition, and there was just a single photo on the wall. Or, there were a bunch of shots, none related to each other: one river, one B&W sock on the sidewalk, one tree with shallow depth of field, one duck, one mechanical detail, and one gravestone. You have just imagined this forum Not very satisfying as a whole, just a bunch of individual images. There is a power in projects that doesn't exist for individual images.

The bold part is what I actually prefer. I thought about it for a while to see the reason, the difference between... I'll call them "a thematic collection" and "an individual collection."

In my opinion former emphasizes message, the why. Latter emphasizes technique, the how. It all comes down to our own personalities, but for me the latter is more about photography as an art than the former. Completely subjective, as I said, everyone follows his own path.

Write anything longwinded in TextEdit or something similar with auto save. The battery for my MacBook is pretty much toast, swollen and therefore I don't keep it in the computer because it messes up the trackpad clicker. But the problem is every once in a while I'll bump the MB against something that will momentarily disrupt the power connection - instant shut down. I have yet to lose any valuable writings since I began composing in TextEdit. BTW, you can adjust the auto save frequency in the app's preferences.

OK, a photo:

M9 ZM 35 f/2.8

I like this image. I might have liked it more had I waited around for someone to walk between the Audi and BMW... but it has a certain balance and flow to it. Or, it's outright boring. It will depend on you.

Still waiting to get my M9 back from Leica USA. I've almost forgotten that I own one...

Phil, I really like your motel image. Is that the No Tell Motel?

I think my scales have been broken for a year or two now Edward. I keep trying to make them read lighter, and they do not want to cooperate. I will know that "Err"!

Edward and Doug, just put one leg on the floor; you will be much happier I appreciate your crop, btw, Edward.

I need to start bringing my M8 to work again, so I can contribute to this thread, but I am still totally enamoured with my D3+100MP pair, so it could take a while.

Phil

There is no direct connection between the camera and the lens. If the lens is 6bit coded the camera knows there is a 90/2.0. But he can't tell if its at f/2 or f/22.

I thought the camera guesses by looking at the shutterspeed? But not shure about that.

BTW, My camera needs calibration.
My camerashop told me it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to have this done by leica. I would like a full calibration (close is a little bit off, far is way off) with sensor cleaning.

Anyone has experience with this? How long did it take to receive a calibrated camera back?
And at what costs??
Thanks!

The M8 and M9 have a little blue dot on the front of the camera, above the Leica dot, and by measuring the light there and through the lens, it uses the difference to estimate the aperture. Of course, there is a lens on the camera but not on the dot, so the further this focal length deviates from the "focal length" of the dot, the worse the estimate.

Luka, very nice shot! Its been awhile since I've seen this type of picture from you. I think consciously, you may think that you do not have a theme going on but these "themes" do emanate subconsciously!

Thanks Yes, you are right but I think it's mostly because I'm at some period using some lens a lot and the scenery is the same since I'm in the same place and the season is the same.

----------

Now imagine that HCB puts 5 lenses in his pockets, 21, 28, 35, 50 and 90, and walks out the door.....

Thank God he only had one 50mm lens most of the time, although he did use a longer focal length, mainly for landscape. I can't imagine how many decisive moments he would have missed if he was fondling glass rather than hone in on his vision.

A "project" or "theme" can only be defined by the artist(s), it can be a single subject, it could be multiple subjects, but generally in photography, if you want to exhibit or publish, you better have a strong theme.

Generally, I agree but I was going by the narrower definitions with the limits that Carsten set. In general a "project" could be anything, it just implies a goal. I could have a project to produce as diverse a set of images as possible. "Theme" generally just requires that there is some common element but there is no requirement as to how narrow or broad it should be.

Themes have been around the art world for a very long time. A project could be a day's photo walk or much longer. As an example, consider Paul Strand's collection of pictures in "The World on My Doorstep", a project which spanned 26 years until his death. In this one book, the theme is mainly about him taking pictures while he was living in France, his goal being to find a "perfect village" to document. In the end, the pictures were not only taken in France, but also in Italy, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Romania and others. If you have not seen
...Show more

I haven't seen it but I'm not a great fan of his work - at least not his people photography that I've seen. I'm not at all into the whole "documenting the human condition" thing that many of the photographers are considered great today aimed for. It can be interesting and well done, but it's not my thing. In the whole street/people genre there are basically only two photographers that I can say I really like and that serve as some form of inspiration. The fist one is HCB, more for his compositions rather than his admittedly impressive ability of capturing the relevant moment. The other one is Garry Winogrand for his sense of humor that permeates his photos.

It was Winogrand who said "I photograph to see what the world looks like in photographs." - and that's part of my motivation as well. My general goal however is to see in photographs what the world looks like when I get it to look the way I want. Documentary photographers are interested in showing the world how it is, I'm interested in showing it the way I think it ought to look like in a specific image.

With this, I think I better post a picture, M9 50CronV3

Hmm.. Could you explain the thought you had behind that image? It doesn't seem random yet after looking at it for a while I can't figure it out. It bugs the hell out of me

Even if we just stick to his main body of work I think it is way too broad to be called a "project". He did street photography in France, like you can say that I do landscape photography in Sweden.

I think that isn't quite fair. Street photography in general is a huge area, as you imply, but his street photography was quite narrowly defined, almost always just one person doing something unusual (or usual!), at the just the right moment. And he did it for so long, and so well, that he pretty much defined the genre for a long time. One could say similar things about Ansel Adams. He did what he did so well, that today we have a hard time appreciating his work, since we suffer from a million copycats. Yes, HCB dabbled in a couple of other things, but we are probably talking less than 1% here. I think we should all be so focused!

Anyway, I have not attempted anything at collection level. My current photos are more intended to be viewed as standalone works and there is no real meaning on the collection level. It's not very unusual. Although thematic collections are common in photography, they are very rare in for instance paintings.

I am not so sure. Painting in general yes, but probably not painting as done by the masters. There again, we see quite tight focus in the body of their work (never all, but most). Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, Michelangelo, all had a unique and recognizable style in their prime, although they tried other things too. Of course, what a museum shows can be quite mixed. These things are expensive and few galleries/museums have decent budgets.

Which brings me to our original discussion - to bother or not to bother with exotic lenses. I'll draw an analogy to painting again. For some type of paintings the choice of brush and use of brush technique and oil paint isn't essential. The choice of brush technique and oil paint type was completely irrelevant for Kandinsky and it's quite obvious why. The strong point of his paintings is the geometry, strong color contrasts and the composition. The same goes for HCB and his 50mm.

I agree, and I also agree that it can be important. I think that for sustained project work, fringe rendering styles tend more to get in the way than help, but there will always be exceptions, of course. And note that I do most of my work at the moment with the 100MP, not exactly a neutral lens, so there are clearly limits to what I am trying to say. I draw the line somewhere between 100MP and Rokkor 58/1.2 (what are those worth, btw? I saw one today, but didn't know what it should be worth. Very nice condition, looked like this, on the far right: Rokkor 58/1.2).

The interesting question then is [...] had HCB's photos been better had he used a more diverse selection of lenses with interesting drawing styles. My answer to that is: absolutely.

Unsurprisingly, I disagree On a few of his shots, I wish he had gotten the composition slightly better, but other than that, I really can't find flaws in his photos.

The images I prefer are when you seem to go out of your comfort zone, the train or bus with the blur and movement (I can not seem to find the images at the minute) These images have to my eyes more of a smack between the eyes effect, still great exposure and post processing but man can this man take a picture effect on me. Maybe it is the lack of controlled conditions I prefer that the strict more methodical approach you normally take.

Looking through your flickr gallery, I'm not surprised that you prefer those images. The ones you mention are primarily effect shots that give a single impression for the entire image. Put in another way, they are more emotional than intellectual. There's no accounting for taste - and that's a good thing. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I post set of images and different people have completely different opinions about the individual images. My more carefully structured images (which I relatively rarely do with the M9) require a different approach to viewing, decoding the various geometrical relationships with between the elements that form the image.

I wish I had your control of exposure and post processing technique, the time and even inclination to go out with my gear. Nevermind the best equipment money can buy.

The role of equipment is often misunderstood. There are two separate purposes for it. One is simply image quality which can be a technical requirement for the presentation. When I do a 100x80cm print for an exhibition the image quality has to be high. For my type of photography where detail and texture play an important role, I can't use a photo shot with a mobile phone. However if my target is a small web image then it makes no difference. I'm pretty sure that I could post one image shot with a small sensor P&S and one with the M9 plus a neutral lens (like the 75 Summicron) and you would not be able to with certainty say which is which.

Generally speaking image quality is expensive and follows the law of diminishing returns.

The other aspect is the look a camera/lens combination can produce. The drawing style of a lens can contribute to an image in various ways. This does not have to be expensive. There are plenty of very interesting cheap alt lenses.

So unless you do large prints or really like the look that some expensive lens produces the costs can be kept relatively low.

I seriously hope I do not offend you too much.

Not too much but just right No but seriously, I would consider myself an abject failure as a photographer if everybody liked all my photos. It would mean that I somehow managed to capture the lowest common denominator which is not exactly what I'm aiming for.

I would call that as a pretty broad definition - such as a landscape photographer that shoots in the right light.

One could say similar things about Ansel Adams. He did what he did so well, that today we have a hard time appreciating his work, since we suffer from a million copycats.

I'd say even more so for Ansel Adams. I've never understood the cult around him. Yes, he was a great photographer and innovator but the field has progressed beyond what he did. And yes, people use some of his innovations but so what? He didn't invent the field and used the innovations of earlier landscape photographers.

I can understand the praise that HCB still gets today and I can understand why Adams was highly respected in his own time. I can't however understand the people who today go to Yosemite and following his steps and elevating him to some kind of saint of landscape photography. HCB remains unique, Adams does not.

Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, Michelangelo, all had a unique and recognizable style in their prime, although they tried other things too. Of course, what a museum shows can be quite mixed. These things are expensive and few galleries/museums have decent budgets.

Let's look at van Gogh for example:
google image search: van gogh

Apart from his style, do you see any theme? While there was definitely certainly variation between artists to the degree of how eclectic their work was (Rembrandt painted mostly people), themed collections were relatively rare with pre-modernist painters. There are notable exceptions with for instance projects financed by the church where an artist would paint a series of religious paintings that formed a coherent collections. For the most part however the collection approach was relatively rare.

I draw the line somewhere between 100MP and Rokkor 58/1.2 (what are those worth, btw? I saw one today, but didn't know what it should be worth. Very nice condition, looked like this, on the far right: Rokkor 58/1.2).

I paid $700 for one that was converted and chipped but had to pay an additional $300 in VAT+taxes so it was overall rather expensive. Are you sure you can adapt it to Nikon?

Unsurprisingly, I disagree On a few of his shots, I wish he had gotten the composition slightly better, but other than that, I really can't find flaws in his photos.

Then we agree to disagree I can find many things that I consider flaws in his photos. I still think he was a genius, but hardly a perfectionist.

Man...I have waited for this. Got the M8.2 yesterday along with a 50 1.4 Pre-ASPH and 35 f/2 ASPH

Nothing fantastic...just indoors this afternoon with all shots at ISO 640. Will try to take it out this week for a run. All with 50 1.4

First shot:

Forget there isn't a mirror...tried to take this shot about 5 times with a decent shutter speed and was wondering why the screen was showing black. Forgot to take off the lens cap

I just want a picture of anything...

Phil, beautiful portrait! Sharp yet gentle on portraits. I find if I view the files with the 90 Cron AA at 100% there is incredible detail, and subtly that is not evident with web size images. Carsten is correct, the recorded f stop is a calculated value and can vary quite considerably.

Boris, very nice portait! Love the skin tones and rendering

Luka, excellent shots! My favourites here are #1 and 3. I love the composition of #3

Ryan, congratulations! Very nice shots! I really like the rendering with 50 Lux pre Asph
