Thanks Charles & Joe
Joe, nice shots - I like the shadow one.

Luka, yes the beauty of FF with a lens like the 35 Lux, lends itself to very unique shots. Initially with the 5DII, lenses like the 50L and 85L I, is look I was striving for in my images, but I soon became frustrated with focusing issues with the lenses wide open. I spent more time in making the lenses work, with numerous calibration issues, rather getting the shots. Great lenses though!
Interesting concept, having the narrow DOF, and the beautiful OOF rendering really connects you with the subject more initimately and is unique.
Luka, I must admit I admire your resolve with M9, as it sometimes seems to run against the more meditative style of photos you enjoy so much IMO I think within the next 2 years, we will see cameras that will encompass the features that will suit our styles more so, with the strong competition out there already. I must say I am really enjoying your new style that is shining through with the M9!...Show more →
Well, my idea was that since there is no one single perfect system for every occasion that I use multiple systems.
-The X1 was to be my compact, something I would always carry around when I had no other camera.
-The M9 was for when I wanted high quality but still only carry a reasonable amount of gear. The typical application would be travel photography where photography plays a secondary role.
-The 5DII as the main camera for landscape photography where the weight of the gear was less of an issue.
-The 7D for action photography.
-The Pentax 67 for medium format film photography.
So far my plan has been an utter failure and the M9 is largely to blame.
The problem is that it's too compact and the image quality is too good. In short instead of taking the X1 with me, I bring along the M9. It's not a pocket camera, but it's light and compact enough to always bring along. In terms of image quality, choice of lenses etc instead of complementing the 5DII, it has taken a big chunk of its natural area of application. Don't take me wrong, if I was to judge by the images alone, the 5DII would still without hesitation be my choice. I prefer the lenses I have, close focus capabilities, high res LCD and of course live view. However when you take practical considerations into account, most of the time I end up choosing the M9. So instead of plugging the gap between the X1 and the 5DII it has knocked out the former and decimated the use of the latter.
Of course, this arrangement is till new and the M9 has the great advantage of being the 'new toy on the block'. I'm hoping in time to get a more balanced use of the different systems.
The Pentax 67 has been an utter failure so far as I have not really been able to get anything usable from it. It's in part user error, in part that I don't really like the film look and in part that I've been getting exceptionally crappy scans from the lab. I'm not ready to give up on that yet though.
As far as type of photography goes, I've been doing it too short a time to say anything definitive about it. I've actually only had photography as a serious hobby for a year now and I've gone through a couple of phases. So far the pattern has been that when I feel that I'm getting the handle on one type of photography I move to another. I'm probably going to continue in that fashion but I would like at the same time to go back and revisit some previous types.
Anyway, I took a short walk today and took some photos (the first since Egypt). I could have taken the 5DII - I considered it, but decided in the end on the M9 due to compactness and the fact that I was going to shoot handheld.
