This means I need to wait longer for a full format camera in a "D90" body size... or maybe this camera is what I was waiting for...

They've done some serious if not impossible magic if a 16mp DX sensor has the same noise levels as a D700 sensor. Interesting. It's also curious it's listed as 8 fps, that's more of a D300s spec camera.

Yeah color me suspicious as well. Between this and a 18-200mm FX lens Nikon seems to be bending physics as we know it.

Maybe, not so surprising. The 1dmk4 has 16 mp. w/ same noise levels as D3/D700. Granted that has a 1.3x sized sensor. Taken from this context, I guess that kind of performance in a dx sensor is not so far-fetched. If true, maybe we can have a 24 mp. FF with D3s noise levels. Magic indeed!
The continuous AF in live view mode is what intrigues me the most. Rumors that Nikon has been working hard on improving AF (which is already state-of-the-art as it is right now). This should be an indication (preview) of what to expect for the D4.

How long does Nikon take to release a product once it's been announced?

Not sure, but this hasn't even been announced, so... I wouldn't count on it in any way, shape or form.

Interesting, to say the least.

Given the rumoured frame rate I'd guess the AF system would be improved. That's the weakest aspect with the D90, in my opinion. I'd love to have D300 performance in a D90 package. Don't necessarily need the additional pixels but better high ISO/dynamic range would be sweet.

Let me see if I have this right. According to NR, Nikon is going to leave the D700 and D300s alone for now, and will release a D90 (which will probably sell for $1,000 +/-) that has 16mp, 8fps, same ISO performance as the D700, and HD video with autofocus?

Do they think Nikon is stupid? What do they think would happen to D300s and D700 sales?

Agreed, if they come out with this no one will need a D300s/D700/D3s.

If they concurrently release a D700s with the D3s sensor and this new 16mp DX body there would still be a good reason to get the D700s. The extra high iso sensitivity and narrow DOF capabilities of that FX sensor. Of course that's contingent on them releasing a D700s.

Crop and ff sensors still have the difference of DOF... thats something that wont improve with technology. that said, i highly doubt it will have all those features... 8fps without a grip? better ISO, better af, etc.... how are they even going to market the d300s and d700??

my guess is some of the details were mixed up somewhere in the game of telephone.

Because of the likelihood of more megapixels on the D4, the D3s could be the low-light champion for longer than we think (or rather, the D3s sensor will be).

When a company doesn't innovate because they don't want to lose sales for higher-priced models...it starts looking a lot like GM (that is, doomed).

By making them that much or more better.

"I just got some basic description of the Nikon D90 replacement..."

Uh-huh. Nikon's R&D guys just phoned to let him know. I'm putting money on THIS one.

IMHO this is very unlikely.
Even though Nikon could produce such a sensor they won't bring it to the market now.
It's too big of a step (2 generations) forward.
Nikon only wants to provide us with incremental changes, so we upgrade every 1or 2 year.
