Nikon wants to stay ahead of Canon and Sony, to win more customers. And Nikon wants to make sure they don't lose customers to Canon and Sony. The rest of it follows logically... conspiracy theories about their holding back technology to milk every dollar from you are just silly.
Re the rumor, this rumored D90 replacement looks too good to be true to me. Just too many things that are too improved or too high-end. But we'll see.
Why do people keep posting these links from NR? Hell, anyone can make up some cockamamie "predictions", slap them on a web page and eventually be somewhat correct - and then people assume they have a clue as to what the crap they're talking about
wtb: NR post about about a 35 1.2 to make week complete lol.
Metal body, d90 price would shoot up a bit on this replacement (dare say so close to d300s you may as well get that in the off chance you pick up a MF Ai-S gem (of which there are many) and want the convenience of metering in body and not by eyeball and hand.
I think it's likely there's going to be a D90 replacement soon, but I doubt it's going to shoot 8FPS (or have D700 ISO) - sounds like a D300 killer to me.
Having said that, if they pull it off I think I can find room in my bag
And...
If they pull it off, the D4 is REALLY going to be impressive.
It would be a first in a DSLR, they were targeted at extremely small pixel pitch compacts. I'm not sure why it couldn't be used in a DSLR though. Sony does use it in a PS, and we do know who gives Nikon a hand.

Maybe, not so surprising. The 1dmk4 has 16 mp. w/ same noise levels as D3/D700.
This isn't quite true. It has a similar or slightly better deep-shadow noise at high ISOs, but it has slightly more shadow-noise at low ISO, and far more mid-tone noise at any ISO (D700's ISO 200 = 1D Mark IV's ISO 100).
The physics don't support the idea that a CMOS-based DX camera will equal the D700 any time soon (if ever, frankly).

I beg to differ. With the D3s, Nikon improved on the noise performance of the D3 by atleast 1.5 stops (maybe as much as 2). As it is right now, the D700 is just about 1 stop better than the D90. So, in theory, if they do to the D90 sensor what they did to the D3s and keep it at 12 mp., it should be better than the D700 by 0.5 to 1 stop. Just trade that advantage for a slight increas in mp.
I think it is doable. Well, atleast, doable by Nikon.

I think it will be more along the lines of 16mp dx with noise levels slightly better or same as D300s, 5fps, 8 with a newly released grip, and who knows on the AF system. Will probably be $200-300 less than D300s.

It's also possible Nikon has gotten the idea of releasing cameras in 2's as far as quality goes (D3000/D5000, D90/D300, D700/D3), out of their heads and will begin to release cameras in 4 steps and do away with the needless overcrowding of their own lineup. A D5000, D300, D700, D3 makes a lot more sense than what they are doing now. Of course adding in the "s" "x" upgrades would still be useful to bridge the gap between new releases.
To go a little further, this rumor doesn't seem that far fetched. If you are going to release a new camera, you have to release something that is better than its predecessor. I don't think an upgrade to the D90 with just 1080HD video, and 14MP instead of 12.3 is going to get people jumping out of their wallets to purchase one.
The previous Nikon jumps have been very good in terms of what the new cameras were offering. D80-D90 (more MP, video, better AF, better sensor, live view)
D200-D300(more MP, better AF, better sensor, better ISO, video in the "s")
D2x-D3(better sensor, better AF, better ISO, full frame, etc etc)

I'd be very surprised if Nikon releases a body with more than 12MP that is not a D3 replacement first. Nikon typically starts at the top and then slowly moves to the bottom, with an exception of D3/D300 announcement at the same time, but still D3 came at the same time. D200 worked itself into D80, D300 worked itself into D90. If they change the pattern they've had for years, they would be very inconsistent. Thus a D4/D400 combo should come out first. Then a replacement for D90. That is the Nikon way.
