That is a incredibly impressive performance from the Rok. Count me as impressed. I don't think the 85L ii is focused dead-on in the 1.4 crop, but that is just splitting hairs...

I am too. I suppose the focus could be off a tad - getting it perfect is always a challenge at wide apertures. Nevertheless they both produce very nice images.

Ah! There we have the performance of the Rokinon/Samyang that I'm used to. And yes, it isn't at all good stopped down compared to whatever-other-lens. But that's probably not why you'd buy one.

But there's also something about the colors. The Canon has the edge over the Rokinon there, in my opinion. It's not sharper at f/1.4, but still less dull.

Rok looks very nice, interesting how it's optimized for wide open use, makes sense I guess.
Thanks for the tests, you da man!

I don't have my Nikon 85 1.4 AF-D anymore......I wish I would have done a comparison. If this lens is comparable to the Canon at 1.4 I know there wouldn't even be a comparison with the Nikon

I just wish I was better at manual focus. Kind of makes me want to test out some other great 85s I've seen here on the alt board.

85mm has many excellent option. Great job testing em. Obviously there is a need for both, not everyone could afford/need the L lense. I am happy with my Rokinon

The 85L is definately showing some coma. I have had both the 85L and the 85LII and I have only noticed coma in the mark II. Go figure.

This is the only canon lens I own and it bothers the mess out of me. As soon as I pulled it out of the box, shot a few shots, coma. My original didn't do this. I say that Rokin is definately holding it own and then some.

TAGfan: can you please do a nice outdoor bokeh scene shoot with Canon @f1.2 and the Rokinon @f1.4? I would like to see how the bokeh differ.

Not sure what you mean. Are you saying the Nikon 85 1.4 AF-D is much better or worse than the Canon?

I am very impressed with the results but faced with a buying decision I'd get the Canon, because it has AF. If I could trust myself to reliably MF on moving subjects I'd buy the Rokinon in a heartbeat but alas, I'm not so good at this. Therefore, I'd rather chase the moment rather than chase the focus.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Sorry, saying the Canon is better than the Nikon from what I have seen at wide apertures

Here is something similar, in the meantime. You can see that the Rokinon is hard to beat regarding smooth bokeh: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/825463/0

Great. The Rokinon looks smoother @f1.4 as the Canon FD @f1.2

The CA from the Canon is apparent at f/1.4. The black on the forehead is purple

I used an 85L recently and most of the shots were not properly focused and it was fairly slow to focus anyway. It may be that in practice there's not much difference between AF and MF when compared to the 85L due to this problem (assuming an appropriate focussing screen for MF). Except for portraiture perhaps the 85/1.4/1.8s are a more practical proposition.

The 85L ii focuses slowly compared to most other AF lenses, but a lot faster than I can using an MF lens. Especially one as damped as the Rokinon.

I've been spoiled by the fast focus of the 135L though.

Is there any way of getting AF confirmation chip on to this lens??

Buy a Nikon version and then slap a chipped Nikon-to-EOS adapter on it.

Or buy a chip and then find instructions on how to epoxy it onto your lens in the right position.

That is what makes me think that the 2nd series is not 100% on with focus. The 1st series does not show CA like this and it is also more crisp. Hard to get it right all the time at 1.2 or 1.4... In any event this is all measurbating... Both lenses are good at actually making great photographs, and for the price the Rok is simply amazing.
