p.3 #1 · MF Screen Calibration

Oh, I have had no problem removing the screen... the shims / washers are tricky though, I find. Now on to the second attempt, wish me luck

Ok, it's actually not so hard once I knew what to do:

MUST remove the front plate with the foam pads - didn't know and hence was trying to squeeze the shims past them, which bent them.

Paul you're on a 5D Mark 1, right? It seems to be different there, no need to remove anything...

That's very good info. I had no idea about the MKII. I had to do that on my 20D, too.

As per the warning in my tutorial, when you attempt to remove the front plate, make sure you are able to secure the plate with some kind of tool and careful ease it out of the chamber. The plate has sharp edges and dropping it may result in a scratched focusing screen or mirror (if you had the screen removed first). Speaking from personal experience here, scratched the screen and since then have a low opinion of magnetized screw drivers Unfortunately you need them to conveniently and securely remove the micro screws. Just that when the plate accidentally gets dragged along with it and mid way loses its hold, bad things can happen!

Thanks for the heads up, Jan! I didn't have any trouble now, but I got tons of dust in my viewfinder, not to speak of that massive scratch on the screen - but gotta live with it for a while, as Canon Singapore is out of stock on the Eg-S until some time in July

Proper cleaning to be scheduled...
