p.96 #1 · Leica R Series Lenses

Well, since you've given me such a warm welcome, here's another one taken with the 35-70/3.5 on the 5D.

I have the 105-280. IQ is great, similar to 70-180 but I think its too heavy for video.

How would the 105-280 compare to the 70-180 on an 1,4 converter?

I don't know how the 70-180 performs. I read that they are of similar build. The 70-180 and 1,4x converter would even be slightly heavier (1870 g + the converter at about 150g versus 1950 of the 105-280). It needs to be supported anyway. And this is a heavy camera as well.
Puts writes, that the 105-280 has its optimum at 200-240mm, and that it only slightly gets better when you stop down. The center of the lens, which is all that matters in this case, is very good at all apertures.

Cyra,
,
70-180 will not take the 1.4x apo extender. You may search this forum, I did a comparison not long ago. If you are not using 4k camera, I doubt there will be any difference between them.

I should even say more: that boke is just gorgeous, and well put to use. The feeling is so calm yet also almost impressionistic.

Many thanks, Carsten! In fact, my usual picture on close focus what I love to do

Lux-R80 & Lux-R50 E55 equally pleasant as on FF as on crop cameras, it's a artistic lenses. Lux-R50 E60 & Lux-R 35 better on FF only, because the more "technical". And give the maximum "bokeh-space" on a full frame.

There are lots of storks in Extremadura, Spain. 280/4 APO with 2x APO Extender. Still had to crop. I wonder, how Doug gets his phantastic bird shots in which the birds are filling the frame.

Hes is insanely patient. And shoots 1.3x crop.. which I guess helps a bit too. But mostly hes just insane in good way..

Optics made by Leica, focussing mount made by Novoflex. Great combination.

I've found that it's much easier to get close to wild animals when I act more like a prey species than like a predator (don't try this with large meat-eaters). After an hour or so of prey-like behavior they figure out I'm not a threat and treat me like background scenery.

Worldinlens, great work with bokeh with 80 and 50.

Now I think I have found the Achilles' heel of 180/2.8 APO: The aperture shape can make images really distracting, much more than I assumed based on earlier shooting. Below some aperture series, these are with Canon 2x, otherwise lens is not not able to shoot these magnifications, if extenders would have been used I still would had to close down the aperture for quality and DOF, so the 2x is not the cause of aperture shape (it will most probably effect the light concentration inside "bokeh circles" but not much, without the 2x the "bokeh circles" has similar bright edge) - apertures f/5.6, f/8 and f/11 from left to right/from top to down:

Typically I shoot this kind of stuff with Zeiss Makro-Planar 2/100, but this will pose some challenges to butterfly photography what I planned to use this lens (with 2x). However later in the day after the dew has gone this issue is much less visible. Wish I would have got the version 2 instead of this version 1...

the last two look really spectacular, but the aperture images destroy them (for me). Funny how there are shodows in the aperture marks.

Do you think, the vII does not have this trait? Has it got rounded aperture blades?
