Very nice photos. Wonder how this zoom compares to the APO Telyt 135mm f 3.4 and apo telyt 3.4 180mm!

Hi Chris,

I do not have nor have ever used, nor owned the 135mm f3.4 Apo-Telyt. But, I have the R 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar as well as the R 180mm f3.4 Apo-Telyt. The Vario Elmar is a very nice, sharp, and capable lens, but it is not as sharp, certainly at or approaching infinity as the 180mm Apo-Telyt where that lens performance shines in particular. Also, from my experience, the 180mm Apo-Telyt performs much better than is often reported in the closer to medium distances.

Rich

Peire - your images are leading me down the path of getting yet another great lens. The Leica Vario Elmar R 80-200/4 will be added to my kit within the next few months. Your influence is bad for my wallet, but good for my soul. :-)

Thank you. This Leica zoom is w worthwile piece of glass.

With soul in a good condition,it is easier to get the wallet thick.

Yes, indeed - I have been watching Peire's Zeiss images for a few years now as well. I actually own many Zeiss lenses and really, really love them. What I am striving for is an array of high-quality lenses that have different rendering characteristics so that I can choose what I feel is most appropriate for a particular image. Or perhaps a better way to put it is for how I want an image to look and feel.

This is exactly what I try to do - pick up the right lens that allows me to get the appropriate look and feel of the picture.

No experience with the apo telyt 135 f3.4.but I have the Apo Telyt 180/3.4 and Elmarit R 180/2.8 v2.

At 180mm the apo Telyt 180/3.4 is a tad sharper and contrastier overall.

Optically, both APO Telyt 135/3.4 and APO Telyt 180/3.4 are better than the zoom lens. The APO 180 really shines for far distances and the optimal IQ is around F4. But the shortcoming of the lens is that the MFD is 2.5m, which is pretty long. APO Telyt 135/3.4 is a better still lens with great resolving power and Leica color, yet very compact in size.

That's why the Apo-Elmarit 180mm/2.8 is so expensive: much better than the zoom (I had both at a time), 1.5m minimum distance and a great focusing ring.
But I cannot stomach the current price.

For those who are looking for a 180 APO lens, the Voigtlander 180 f4 APO LANTHAR is a real gem. I have one with an M42 mount, but I know that there is also a Nikon mount. Build quality seems excellent. The lens was produced in limited quantities and is prized by users and collectors, yet the price for mint copies is still *far* lower than the Leica 180 APO.

Perfectly but still very rare and expensive.

Thanks for your replies!!!

I decided to buy the R 35-70/4 instead of the R 80-200/4 as my 135 Tele Elmar seems to be still competitive versus the R 80-200/4. Then I will have a nice Leica combo...

That's a pretty good idea.

teiki,

I just took a look at Ebay and found several of the Voigt 180s in excellent(+) condition for about $1500. That's not cheap, but Leica APO Elmarit-R 180s start at about $3200. APO TELYT-R 180s are under $1000. So, the relative cost depends on which lenses you are comparing. In terms of relative value, the Voigtander 180 has to be at the top.

Yes for sure. But I already set my heart on the cheap Leica Elmarit-R 108/2.8 (non-Apo ver. II), a Walter Mandler design era's...

It is version 2
I found it in a shop in Amsterdam, 2 years ago.
I like it a lot although it is less convenient (size with adapter) than the Loxia 21. A bit less sharp, but the colours are more intense.
