The going rate for the 90 AA? I've been looking myself and have seen it from US$2300-3000 on the used market. But they show up ever so rarely and their prices since the R line was discontinued have doubled since early '09.

Adam, AA is just short for: apo asph.
It's the latest version of the 90/2 summicron that came out in 2002-2003.

Thanks, I've only ever used M cameras and lenses, haven't even picked up an R lens.
EDIT: Wow, aside from the 180 a friend let me shoot with. How could I forget that legendary beast?!

The 'other' one is the pre-APO version. Nice lens but containing neither aspheric or apochromatic elements and by report, not as sharp as the 90 Elmarit. It's nowhere near the newer 90 AA in terms of clarity, color and above all, sharpness wide-open.

The pre-AA 90 'cron is also a bokeh master.

Another quick question, i've seen shots from the 50 Summilux-M pre-asph and what I liked about it was it was very sharp wide open at f/1.4 and the bokeh was pleasing. Would the R version be the same?

Also, i wanted to know if the Summicron-R 90 APO was the same as the M 90 APO as far as rendering style and sharpness wide open + bokeh..

Best,
Adam

The Summicron 90 R and M share identical optics so whatever differences in rendering that might be experienced should be entirely due to the sensor and not the lens.

Thanks j.liam, do the 50 Summilux-M pre-asph and the Summilux-R pre-asph share the same optics as well?

Best,
Adam

According to Leica expert Erwin Puts, the 50 Summilux-R pre-asph is comparable in performance to the M version shot wide open BUT superior to it when stopped down. Whether this implies different optics or differentiation that arises from scaling up in size is not made clear.

Just bougth a Summicron 90mm/2 and there's something very odd about it. Wide open, under certain light conditions, there's a terrible yellow stain on the photo. Can't see anything looking the glass. By f4, it's gone. Check some test shots I just did...f2 and f 5.6 side by side.

The last two are wide open under natural light.
An aging element maybe

This happens with me and my canon lenses on my 5DII, it also happens with my ZE lenses on my 5DII but only certain lenses and under certain conditions. Don't be alarmed, it's not your lens.

What are people paying for practically BNIB 90 Summicron APOs currently?
Not Ebay pricing, but actual willing to pay pricing?

Oh no....what have I done now? My first Leica lens arrived yesterday (Elmarit 60 /2.8 macro)

I rushed to get it unpacked, put on the EOS adapter and aksed my very cooperative cat to "Say Cheese".

(Hand held, not the best comp....but I'm afraid my gear addiction has just bounced to the next level.)

It's a slippery slope from here, I can tell you that.

About 8 months ago, I paid $2,100 (US) for my 90/2AA. It was a like-new demo from a German shop selling on Ebay. Included a one year warranty and pouch, but no box.
I don't think one can generalize about Ebay pricing. For sure, some Leica items are way overpriced - especially the 'new older stock' items that some dealers have on perpetual 'sale' at delusional prices. But you can find fairly priced items...and even some bargains at times if you put in the effort. I would expect a BNIB 90/2AA to be actually selling for between $2500-3000 today.
