I expect that once your 280/4 arrives and you start using it, you'll use the 280/2.8 only when you need f/2.8.

Doug quite possibly. Certainly when traveling the smaller and lighter 280mm f4 lens will be more likely to travel any distance by air than the 280mm f2.8 lens.

I recently acquired an APO 280 / 4 which is series number 11261, sn 3621989. This makes it one of the earliest lenses from the first series. It does, however, have threads to receive the E77 filters. The original instruction booklet also states this being possible.
On another subject, how do you find the 28mm f2.8
...Show more

Doug,

Thanks for the information.

From what I have read on-line the Leica 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon may be superior in performance to the Canon 24mm T/S at least the first version.

Part of my problem right now is I am only using the Lumix G1 which is the first and first generation Mirrorless M4/3 camera with a 12.1 megapixel sensor. I am hoping to get something quite possibly either the Fujiflim X Pro1 or the X-E1 (shortly) but we are still waiting for the demo X-E1 and the kit lenses to come in to test.

I will do what I can for better testing the lens when I have a larger format sensor. So far though shifted to the maximum it looks quite good to me stopped down as recommended to f11. According to Leica USA the Leica version of the Schneider 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC is of higher standards than those made for either the Canon or Nikon mounts.

As an aside, I went to Leica USA yesterday and dropped off the Summicron 35mm and 50mm lenses to be cleaned up of a little haze ( I should have them back in January). Unfortunately the 90mm Summicron may be retired due to some pitting that seems to have debeloped that can not be repaired so it probably does not make sense to have this lens cleaned especially since I have the f2.8 100mm Apo Macro Elmarit which is in M- condition that Leica worked on earlier this year.

I will also confirm what I was told by the Leica repair tech about my 70-210mm f4 Vario Elmar lens. Justin Stailey of Leica USA had asked the repairman about my keeping and using this lens or I believe the repair tech was asked about the newer 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar (rather than the 80-200mm f4.5) lens. I was told that the 70-210mm f4 lens was of better construction, better parts, and better performance than the 80-200mm lens.

Wonderful shots Rolf. I like the 2nd one's low perspective and the subtle tones of the sky in that one in particular.

This thread is fast becoming more of a discussion thread, however interesting that is!

My 280mm F4 Apo Telyt has yet to ship and if it does not ship tomorrow I will send the seller a message as to ask when it will.

But, this one just sold for $6999.95 and had been up several times for this same asking price The lens was just relisted earlier today and is now shown as sold, so If this is what they will now be selling for I have no idea where the prices will be heading in just several days:

Often someone will make an offer behind the scenes, so I doubt it sold for that price.

phuang3&Ocean, nice examples! I haven't be able to explore its close range yet. That is a good information to know. But I feel my other 35mm lens can focus down to 30cm region with decent performance as well. Again, to me, the real selling point for this 35cron is mid distance Bokeh.( A rare specie at this focal length) and FC can help for 3D subject shooting.

Rdst, Really nice color. Wonderful skill on exposure and PP. #2 is the best. #3 I really like the tree further away but feel close brush a little bit disturbing though it is still beautiful as is. I can imagine stitch with a longer lens might achieve nice result in my mind

Just check 280 APO f4 MTF, now I know what is fussy about it. I don't know there is such A perfect lens exist thank god I am not into this focal length, otherwise, I can't sleep over it.

This must be the highest price 7k for the APO Telyt 280/4.

The price will easily reach 10k next year and probably in few years will be 15k!

It deserves such price as it is a fantastic lens.

It seems the price climb is going to the similar direction of the Voigt 125/2.5 Ais with the silly hood!

Great pictures Rolf and they illustrate the qualities of the 19mm on the D800. This lens is what started the whole alternative forum years ago.

I assume you had to modify it to use it on the D800. I still have my 19mm, but haven't modified it for my D800E.

I had an old 35mm Summicron-R, the later version with flat front element and gave it a try on my D800E. As mentioned above, there are better landscape lenses, but for shooting people or pets it does a great job. This one was shot at F2 on the D800E.

Almass,

Are you soliciting details about various instances of the Leica R 280/4 APO Telyt? Here are some from my recent purchase. Part number 11261. S/N 362XXXX.

- No white (or black, for that matter) engraving "E77" anywhere on the lens. The ID of the inner metal ring on the front of the lens is 77mm. There are ridges on the ID of this ring, but it it hard to tell if they are helical or flat and parallel. These ridges are what the lens cap grippers engage.
- There is a screw just above the center digit of the serial number, but not one near the last digit.
- Flat and mat? The chromed mount is attached with 10 screws which have Philips-like "+" slots. Four of the stews are marked with two diagonal dots near the slots. The heads of all these screws appear to be very slightly convex.
- There are no Leica logos on the lens, red or otherwise.
- It has an R only mount (No sloped chromed cams, just the stepped black one).

The Leica R 280/4 APO Telyt serial number 3658904 which is a 3 Cam 11261 does not carry or should I say is not supposed to carry the Leica logo on both sides.

- In fact, the lens as shown in your link does not show the E77 engraving in white which should be on the right of the serial number.
- The later released lenses have also a screw on the top right of the last digit of the serial number.
- The screws holding the mount have flat and mat heads in later released lenses.
- The early 11261 did

Yes. Thank you.

I am interested to know the differences between the different releases.

More so as to whether there is a difference in the coating.

I think an important lens such as the APO 280/4 deserves to have all facts on record.

And here is a shot for the ones only interested in pictures.
