are you referring to the swirl here? where oof highlights seem to form a ring around the center of the frame?

this swirly effect is due to either astigmatism or field curvature and there are a few other lenses that are famous for it, most notably (i think) the zeiss biotars.

excellent shots by the way.

Yes, That is what I mean. I see that also from 80lux some time. A interesting effect when you put subject in center I don't see that from Nikkor 1.2 AIS, or modern Zeiss I had.
Thanks again for feedback and comments.

Another reason for the swirly boke is mechanical vignetting, I believe, i.e. the housing is not large enough to let the full circle through away from the centre. This looks like cat's eyes.

That is interesting! however, almost all my 1.4 glass have cat eyes, but not swirly bokeh like this??
The 35cron 8 elements is only one I see round circle till to frame corner.

no, that just makes cat's eyes not the swirl.

edit: check out toothwalker's site, i seem to recall he has a good explanation of astigmatism and how it pertains to swirls.

But enough cat's eyes in a circular fashion will certainly cause a swirly effect. Anyway, it is just another factor.

it's possible I suppose I've never seen one. usually the physical vignetting only causes diagonal cat's eyes without ever getting a horizontally oriented cat's eye.

Yanggue,
These are lovely images of your children. I give you the credit more so than the lens itself.

Thanks Well, I often get popped-out image when using this lens. Also my Contax 85/1.4. Especially for medium distance shot like above.
I think the lighting and background distance also made contribution for creating popped-out image in above photo.

3D Elephant. Thank god he seems so small in this photo, otherwise I would be worried of being stomped.

Carsten,

Thank you. The Modular System is an absolutely superb, but horribly expensive. I wish that I could have afforded it in 1998. And today at around $11,000 to $19,000 as a common cost of the 800mm 5.6 with or without the 400mm f2.8 head or $30,000+ for the whole system, it is really pricey.

Still Cron 90 non AA ... This time the lighting is not good to promote a popped-out image .... but I think the microcontrast, color contrast and background distance still help to pop-out the image ...

By the way I never really care about 3D stuff when taking photos, for me it's just a bonus .. the Cron 90 gives me more bonus than other lenses
