I called my Daughter over and she showed me it a little but everything looks like it is just mashed together. Could it have anything to do with the full frame. I am curious if you use the same lens with a D300 and get the same thing.
Very interesting photos John. Swirly backgrounds are a common characteristic in large format photography using vintage lenses. Some modern small format lenses are known to exhibit swirling. But I’ve never seen it in a long focal length lens on small format.
A wide open petzval type lens can produce a very exaggerated swirling effect when stretched to maximum coverage in large format with a busy, uniform, OOF background. Here are some examples:
