p.2 #1 · 7D any advantages over 1DMIV

Well I have to say the 7D is better in every aspect, just to annoy Leonid.

p.2 #2 · 7D any advantages over 1DMIV

For wildlife, the 1.6 crop VS 1.3 is the main advantage. Its nice getting 960mm out of a 600 F4 or a whopping 1344mm with the 1.4 TC.

When sitting behind a 600 (or the like), the size/weight difference is minimal -- specially of you use a grip on the 7d, which I do....

Its also nice to take off the grip on the 7d, put on a black lens (25-105L is my favorite for this) leave the bag in the car, and go walking the streets without looking like a pro lugging a ton of gear. The 1-series do not lend themselves to this "incognito" activity very well...

I almost got a 1d4 when I got my 7d -- the reasons above made the choice... I could afford the 1D4, but after considering the non-monetary issues, I decided to save the money, get the 7D, and spend the diff on glass.

All this said, if you plan to beat your gear -- shoot in rain all the time, snow, sand, or other "violent" environments, the 1D4 is a much better choice. The 7d is tough enough and sealed enough for most "normal" abuse, but for the extremes, the 1-series unquestionably goes that extra mile.

I think it's more cool to say 1D4 than 7D. But I hate the 1 series bulk/weight and price .... so I would never consider one - and I know I am not a lone voice here. Gimme a 5D3 please!

For me (I do not have any of the two):

-1.6 crop for wildlife in good light.
-Flash wireless trigger
-Digital Level
-2 Extra MP (?)
-Size
-pop up flash
-Price
-EF and EF-S lens

that's my guess

Only one I can think worth having is it would be a lot easier to explain the cost to the spouse!

one thing that is often overlooked is that the 1.6x crop cameras are THE MOST VERSATILE camera's Canon makes right now. You have a broader range of effective focal lengths at your disposal with the 7D over the 1D MKIV. With the 7D you have effective focal length range from 7.2mm (Sigma 4.5mm) to 1280mm (Canon 800mm). The 1D MKIV can not touch this broad of a focal range. The best that the 1D MKIV can do is 10.4mm (Peleng 8mm) to 1040mm (Canon 800mm)

**Before we get the nit pickers, I am using currently produced lenses without modifications. Yes I know the Canon 1200mm gets you longer, but it is not currently produced, and yes I know you can modify EF-S lense to fit on the 1D, but you can't use all focal lengths.

And 7D with 1.4 and 800 is 1792.
AF only in LV mode, but it does actually work.

Of course, they could have provided (easily changable) custom focus screens even with the LCD VF, so while it is probably right that including the LCD VF made it easier to justify to themselves to not include them, there does not seem to be a real technical reason they could not have designed them into the system.

you're probably correct, i think nikon has the same LCD VF but also easy screen changes

7D has more usable spot AF mode - not restricted to just super teles while pressing the AF Stop button on the lens.

7D retains all cross-type AF sensors down to f/5.6 instead of f/2.8 or f/4, although there are disadvantages too.

It's significantly lot cheaper.
