Other than the price does the 7D have any advantages over the 1DMIV?
Thanks
it has more reach when you have good lighting
much less bulky
some prefer the UI
can take EF-S lenses and doesn't fall at an awkward FOV with standard zooms
mini-focus point works with far more lenses with the 7D (although which delivers better in the end, regardless, is another matter so whether this is an advantage or not is unclear)
some say the electronic horizon and such but IMO that is a negative since it doesn't easily take custom focusing screens which is a pretty major downside IMO, so I call the VF a huge negative compared to the 1D4 myself
It's cooler to say 7D than it is to say 1D Mark IV ... that's the main reason I got the 7D. Another (minor) reason is that I couldn't afford the 1D Mark IV.

Of course, they could have provided (easily changable) custom focus screens even with the LCD VF, so while it is probably right that including the LCD VF made it easier to justify to themselves to not include them, there does not seem to be a real technical reason they could not have designed them into the system.

Nikon use LCD viewfinders and almost arbiterily pick models that can have replacable focus screens, all can be replaced though anyhow...
The 7D's advantages over the 1D4 should be slim to none given the lineup 7 price.
Sorry to hang up on remote flash triggering. I use that feature on my 7D all the time. It requires the flash to be popped up to work but does not require it to actually flash. Indeed you can use it (and I do it this way) with a menu setting preventing the on board flash from firing.
I looked at reviews of the 1DIV and saw that there was a menu setting for remote flashes. Am I hallucinating here. Does anyone have the camera and know for certain?

I have both and no the 1D4 does not do remote flash triggering. The menu items you are referring to are for controlling the custom functions of a flash which is attached to the hot shoe (or via the OC-3 cord).

I presume that the 1D4, like some other recent Canon bodies, also allows you to configure, through its menu interface, the control of remote flashes via a hot-shoe-attached 580exII. Stated another way, it allows you to configure an attached 580exII to control remote flashes. Perhaps this is what Jeff refers to.
