p.1 #1 · So how many weddings do you do per month on average?

This is for those photographers who make a living, more or less, on wedding photography. My girlfriend has the impression that a photographer who gets $3-5k per wedding would need at least 3 weddings per month to make an acceptable living. Although I agree somewhat (I think the gross might be higher), I can't imagine most upper-level photographers doing 3 weddings per month.

Anyone?

your pricing doesnt have much to do with how much you shoot. i am 3-5k and definitely have at least 3 or 4 or 5 weddings a month come late spring/all summer/fall. i would imagine this will build year after year. 3 weddings a month is actually on the low side for an established pro in peak season.

Well... I'm an established pro, but I'm also exclusive to 15-20 wedding clients.

A. I don't want to have to work 40 weddings a year.
B. I charge enough to cover my bills and live an ok life.
C. I enjoy family time, so a weekend off is important to me.

ymmv, but many pro agree, as always it's just ONE opinion, but it is an opinion with 118 weddings behind it.

Probably depends on where you live, what your expenses are, how many kids you have, ect...

I average about 4 weddings per month. Winter months are slower so spring/summer/fall is usually 5-6. It's hard to say an exact number though since people have different circumstances. A friend of mine shoots and charges the same as me, but he has 5 kids and a bigger house. So, he's living much tighter.

Generally speaking, at 4k per wedding and 3 weddings/month, you'd be grossing around 144k. At 25-50% take home (I broke this down in a thread a few weeks ago), you'd probably be looking at anywhere from 36,000 to 72,000 in profit.

I have to agree that it really depends on your market. I shoot an average of 5-6 per week and 8-10 during the busy season. I am guessing the market is quite different in Hawaii.

well I have 13 weddings so far this year so I guess it's 1.111... a month. Is that what you were asking? Or are you asking how many once the "season" opens? Here in upstate NY wedding season is normally may through Oct or Nov. This year I have one in Jan, 2 in Jun, 4 in Jul, 2 in Aug, 3 in Sep, 1 in Oct.

I've only got five on the books for 2010 right now, and I don't really want to do more than 20/yr.

Definitely want to stay away from more than one per weekend, but that's just me.

I do shoot more than weddings, though.

what a difference between America and the Middle east ... since I moved here for work ( Israel ) , we are doing around 20 (weddings - Engments. ) a month and the season starts here around April and goes on ... I wish I can do that back home in Toronto ...

We've done as many as 6 in one month... but I'll never to that again.

We also booked nearly 40 one year (37, I think)... but I'll never do THAT again.

In a perfect world, I'd shoot two a month for all 12 months. But wedding season doesn't work like that. To get the 20 or so we prefer to have in a year to meet our budget needs, I have to shoot at least 3 or 4 a month from April to October... because November to March is pretty slim.

I'm resurrecting this...

It seems like there are two types of wedding photog businesses.

1) 1 main photographer (CEO, sole proprietor, what have you) - 35ish weddings (50 at max)

2) Multiple photographers (1 main, a few 'associate' photographers)

With multiple photographers I've seen as high as 200 weddings per year. At $5k a wedding, that's good revenue.

not sure the reason for your question but if it's about figuring how much to charge and/or budgeting, do yourself a huge favor and make a business plan NOW. figure out what you need to live and your personal expenses. figure out your expenses, no matter how small you think they are. figure out what every wedding costs you. i was blown away by the fact that I wrote off 30k last year, and i'm a sole prop working out of my living room. just do the math. and realistically, you should also be assigning value to your time as well, so figure out how much time you are spending on each task and give it a dollar amount. it took me two years to realize i need to charge about 3.5k and do 15 weddings per year just to break even, 25 to be comfortable (but that's ME.. I don't own much or have flashy tastes in anything and don't have a family). but, unfortunately you can't just say "ok, i'll shoot 25" and make it happen if you're not an established business. so, figure out what you need and go backwards from there, balancing how many you want to shoot and what you think your market will realistically support.

I hear ya. I dont WANT to have to shoot 40 weddings a year but I will and I do. Why? Because I LOVE money and if people are gonna keep booking me at 5k or more then I will do 40 weddings a year now. SO in a few years, when I dont feel like doing 40 weddings and only want to do 10 a year I will and I can because I wont have any bills, mortgage and stuff.

I enjoy family time too, but I also want money for my future and who knows how my back will hold out over the years. Maybe I wont make it to age 50 or so. So why not make as much as I can now then cut back later in life.

Hell I get mon-thursday off

Form,
I have shot an average of 40 weddings a year for the last 10 years. My average price range is around 4-5k per wedding and I also shoot seniors, families and some commercial work. I take Sundays and Mondays off and usually work Tuesday-Friday with non wedding work and then work some Fri. Sat. Sun. weddings. I need our studio to average 1-1.5k per weeks to cover expenses of lease and employees. I'll usually make the wedding revenue myself as income.
