Hmm, I think you see flat when you want to see flat, isn't that what (all the) recent thread(s) have been about? (that people see 3d when they want to see it, and not when they won't?) Not that that is a bad thing, it just seems that defining it objectively is not very easy
No, I don't see "it". That's why I chose the Rokinon. Do not feel sorry for me. That is a serious waste of emotion on your part. I couldn't be happier with my decision.
WOW, both lenses look almost exactly the same to me, and both lenses are horrid compared to the 85 1.8 from Canon EOS EF system, and both are really horrid compared to a 85ZE.... Mind you the ZE is probably a heck of a lot more. But the 85 1.8 shouldn't be much more, if any at all.. Mind you, you both may look for different things in a lens then I do.

Interesting, in the matchup between those two and the EF85/1.8 that cogitech posted I thought it was pretty clear that the EF85 was seriously outclassed in terms of sharpness, colour and bokeh. The differences between the FD85 and the Rokinon were far more subtle.

I'm currently shooting with the Contax CZ Planar 85/1.4, Rokinon 85/1.4 and Leica Summicron-R 90/2. I've been comparing them in a variety of ways on my 1DsIII and 5D, with the goal of keeping "the best" one of them. Of course, some of you have already figured out that I'm keeping all of them.
Why am I not surprised?
BTW, if I were to upgrade my 85/1.8 I'd get a 85/1.2 II.

Sure, in the examples where the little girl was being photographed, I think they all looked roughly the same... This above comment I made was directed towards the shots of the picnic table.
Honestly though, in the shots of the picnic table edge... Both lenses were horrid and my 85 1.8 would do much better... BTW, my 85 1.8 is sharper then the other two lenses, but the colors do lack a lot, which is why I've switched to the 100 ZE (the 85L isn't my cup of tea either). I also don't really mind the bokeh of the 85 1.8 (my copy at least), maybe whomever shot with the 85 1.8 should get another copy of the lens, as it's sharpness is lacking..
Here's a sample from the 85 @ 1.8, clearly it's a winner hands down, with no processing aside from reducing size in photoshop, I took it with the 5DII in JPG mode... I don't remember much else about this photo, as I took it a while back, but I just resized it for you guys to see... Even still, I'm just proving that the bokeh and the sharpness are far superior to both lenses mentioned above IMHO. AND I repeat that I still don't like the 85 hence my switching the the 100 MP ZE...
Adam, the shots of the picnic table are 100% crops from the extreme corner of the frame. I can assure you that the EF 85/1.8 would not be any better. I also don't understand what your sample is supposed to show. It is obviously not a 100% crop, and even so, it is anything but sharp.
As you can see from the shots of my daughter, the EF 85/1.8 is not sharper than the other two lenses (or did you not notice the shots from the EF 85/1.8, since they are over on the right-hand side?). Look again at the 100% crops of my daughter's face, but this time scroll to the right to see the EF 85/1.8. Now tell me, what is "horrid" about the other two lenses?

If you disagree thats fine, but honestly I'd take it over the other two lenses..
i don't understand how anyone could make any judgements about sharpness from shot downsized to ~800 pixels long. i can make any kit lens image look razor sharp by downsizing it to twice that size. a 100% crop like the ones of the picnic table would be useful.

I didn't realize they were extreme corners of the frame, I did however realize they were 100% crops..
I was showing you the bokeh, the overall image.. Honestly this image shows perfectly well what the sharpness would be if you printed a 8x10 print and looked at it from a reasonable viewing distance. I wasn't paying attention to much to the 100% crops, as I like to look at the whole image, I'll look for some shots at 1.8 showing that my copy is sharper then the one you've tested. I just have a hard time finding 1.8 images, I generally shoot on f/2 as Canon bodies have a hard time focusing exactly where I want them to..
About your daughter, I still stand by my first post, which was they all look the same to me. Yes the 1.8 isn't as sharp, but again, I think you don't have as nice of a copy as me. I didn't say the ALT lenses looked horrid photographing your daughter, I said that they looked horrid whilst shooting the measure tape and the bench.. Unless you were TRYING to produce color fringing, they're really bad 100% crops.... Although again I didn't realize they were from the far corners of the frame, which would/could have a decrease in sharpness.
This thread has made me appreciate that I don't see these immeasurable indistinguishable nuances between lenses so that I can be happy with my lowly Rokinon.
