So I was thinking about going down there tomorrow to maybe try my hand at photographing McWay falls. Once I reached that conclusion, I decided I might also head down a little bit earlier to see some of the other sites. What are the most photo-worthy places in Big Sur?
IMO, while McWay Falls is nice there are many better options along that strecch of coast depending on the time of the day or night and the season. If you do shoot McWay at sunset and its a clear night you will be able to see the Milky Way from there which is pretty awesome. That is actually something I have been meaning to shoot more of at night.
Thanks for the great advice. Question: The park says it closes 1/2 hour after sunset. I will not be camping there, so does that mean I have to leave 1/2 after sunset? If so, is camping there the only option to get nighttime shots?
No, there is no gate that closes the hiking trail or anything.
Also most locals park on Hwy 1 directly across from the park. Then walk in from there. So you avoid parking fees that way. And its still a pretty easy walk even from Hwy 1, day or night. Just make sure and bring a headlamp. When I was shooting there one pitch black night all alone I swore I heard critters roaming around in the bushes checking me out. But seeing the Milky Way made it worth it. ...
Thanks guys, after moving to here (Monterey) from CO ~1.5 years I still am surprised by how cool it is to have this stuff in my backyard. I think my kids enjoy it too!

Hmm, I just checked and they are working now. But as you know smugmug has its issues at times.

Derek, they still don't work for me. Maybe someone else can chime in.
So I went to day but got a late start, and also took someone with me who wanted to be home by 8-830. So all things considered, McWay was the wrong blend of a little too far, and needed the right time of light. So I did a different hike... pics to come soon!
