Oh ok ... Well .. it's not an end-of-the-world issue then. Good. Nobody's camera's burst mode kept going higher and higher and wouldn't stop .. like some Toyotas then.

No, indeed not. The upgrade is fine except for that one rather particular issue (which will certainly never affect me!).

But as SOON as this happens some people on the net decide that their camera has been DESTROYED and I'd like to find out if this is actually true. Right now I'm doubting it.

There was certainly an issue with dodgy downloads with the files coming through corrupted enough that they wouldn't expand out of the zip file, but then I can't see how you'd do the upgrade without a .fir file available.

Doesn't Canon of a QA department? How does this go unseen, took so long to release.

Yes, very embarrassing for them, after touting the release for so long.

It's a contrived set of circumstances though :

the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed and the camera becomes unable to record audio if the power is turned off (or if Auto power off takes effect) after registering "Sound Recording: Manual" in the camera user settings.

that I expect it just wasn't tested until the public got hold of the firmware. Even though it should have been. As they say, software is never perfect.

Funny. That's the only way I ever record video. Then again, I am weird.

Actually, the firmware has been out in public for nearly a month prior to its release. A lot of 5D2's that were sold in recent weeks already had the v2.0.3 firmware pre-installed. Obviously, no problems were reported during that time.

I'm guessing that maybe the problem stems from some conflict between a 5D2's previous firmware history, and the latest firmware. That may explain why the new 5D2s preloaded with v2.0.3 didn't report any problems.

In any case, I suspect that this issue is a blessing in disguise. Reports of dead cameras will hasten the release of a v2.0.4, which will presumably also fix the minor bugs with sound on the custom modes (C1,C2,C3). Had it not been for the dead cameras, I'm pretty sure Canon wouldn't have bothered making another firmware just to fix the minor inconveniences with sound.

yeah it does make one wonder

otoh, it is tricky to catch every little contingent bug in software, and this was a slightly unusual circumstance although not too out there really and quite a few people reported it within first two hours of firmware release so.....

and by all accounts it appears as if this firmware had been basically done many, many months ago so given that many months of testing....

which brings one back to it was probably just held back for months due to marketing, surely it could not have been undergoing testing for months and months and had that slip through, or so one would think, but perhaps the audio gain was something they tacked on at the last second though

then again even if 24p was working months ago, but perhaps they ahve been trying to subtly improve certain things with it over the months, so who knows, the delay MIGHT have been legit

anyway i'm glad they did finally release it
and the manual gains are very nice!!
and i'm sure 2.0.4 will be out in no time and in the meantime it's not like a single thing is worse than with the previous firmware!

what dead cameras?
where did canon mention bricking cameras?
of course they would've fixed the C1-C3 sound issue

I upgraded to firmware 2.0.3 with no problems, now i find that they have suspended the upgrade due to problems with which the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed, so don't upgrade untill the new modified firmware is available

Sometimes, QA is not always perfect. If you are a software engineering, you would know that the best testers are the the million of users. Since beta firmware is not a good choice for us to load into our expensive camera, I would expect that there will still be bugs for the release....

it doesnt break anything old though only C1-C3 manual audio and you never had manual audio before at all, so nothing, even with the bug, is worse about the new firmware than the older versions

be glad you got it installed before waiting for 2.0.4

Far from it Stan, I have my video settings mapped to C1 and C2 (HDR settings on C3) It's way more convenient that way!

I just have to deal with it in manual for now, but I hope they fix it soon.

Am I right in saying that still none of the 5 camera-brickers have bothered to post and share their experience here?

Still, in terms of internet polls, 5 liars out of 142 is some kind of extreme truthfulness record ;-)

5 liars out of 142

I would like to understand the psychology behind it. I've seen something similar in lens reviews of one of the latest Canon lenses here on FM. Somebody apparently created several identities at the same day to post several bad reviews (with the same spelling and grammar errors) to cripple the rating of that lens. Does anybody know what drives people to do things like that?

It seems that some people feels so dissapointedfrom their lives that act like that just taking everything into ground. The only thing we could do to help them is just to ignore them
