The review said that he was using PCB softbox.
I looked at my E640s since I have had no problem with interference.
The screws are just inside the diameter of the adapter.
It looks like they are as much an aid in aligning the speedring as an interference.
If one is placing the sofbox on the light at a difficult angle and using the top fingers to hold the box until they retract, there may be a chance for interference.
I'd say it comes down to technique. Which is usually the case with most things like this. :-)

Probably not. White Lightning is one product line, AlienBees is one product line and Einstein is one product line. Would GM put Corvette technology in a minivan? .

Actually, they did. The Pontiac Montana minivan has the rear suspension set up from the Corvette.

When is that mini-boom arm coming? I'm getting more and more interested in that Retro reflector. I'm thinking a set of five 8.5 HO and a set of five Retros might be all I need. I could replace my 11LTR with the Retros, maybe? What I do like about the 11LTR though is they nest together and don't take up much room. Used on X3200, how much difference will I see between 11LTR and Retro at say 100 yards? Or 200 yards? I like the boom arm idea because it will better center the weight over the pole. I'm a bit afraid of medium winds (20-30 mph) blowing over my lightstands as it is. I sometimes weight them down with railroad ties if there's any loose ones around.

200 yards? That's 600' plus. Even with Retro Laser and 640WS the GN is 640 at tightest focus. You would have to use ISO 800+ to get f2.8. (ISO400 for X3200) We are doing comparative tests today of Retro Laser and 11RLT. RL at narrow focus is 1f brighter than 11RLT.

I typically shoot at ISO 800 and will quickly push my D300 to ISO 1600 if needed. (Rarely is when I use strobes.) My slowest lenses are f2.8, although I typically like to shoot at f4 or f5.6.

Hmmm. Retro-L picks up one stop That opens up possibilities. One is I can place flash twice as far, or get one more stop with current strategies. Second possibility is to sell X3200 for lighter, more compact Einsteins and maintain same EV levels. The big advantage 11-LTR have for me is they nest. They take up minimal space in the back of my RAV4. They also have less surface area and thus less wind resistance. That's a factor to consider out here on the prairie.

One f stop doesn't come out twice as far. It's 1.414 times as far - inverse square.

Do you have the CSXCV transceiver module for your Einsteins? If you do the commander automatically communicates with it. Also which version of the CyberCommander firmware do you have installed?

Yes, I have the module. I do not have the CC with me here, but will check the FW in the morning.
thx

Hey Craig, I did the same thing. You have to do the open from studio routine.

Here is the procedure to setup CC with Einstein.

http://www.paulcbuff-techforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=515

On the issue on how long to receive a back order placed in the last few days. Here was a guesstimate by PCB Tech Support but like they said I would call customer service.

http://www.paulcbuff-techforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=621

And now I have a question of my own:

How do you check what firmware version your CC is running?

Actually, in this case, I dont think that will entirely help. It seems like the CC manual that is being sent out was written before Einstein was released. Either that or I need to get better glasses

Update your CC firmware first.

First, once the lights were turned on, you have them all
set to the same frequency, but different channels, correct? You also have
the CC set to the same frequency? Once this is done, you have gone into the
menu to OPEN MEMORY> OPEN FROM STUDIO? At this point X (how many lights you have) channels used
should come up as blue or black bars, and are automatically assigned as
Einstein. If the bars are black, go into the menu LIGHT SETTINGS, and turn
each from STANDBY to ON.

At this point, on the main flash screen, each channel will have a white bar
at the very bottom, and as you move the left joystick to each light, it
should power up and down, as well as fire. If you move the joystick to the
ALL position, all lights should fire. Making no other changes, this should
happen at the model's position as well.

You can thank David for writing the two above paragraphs, I was to lazy to write, so I jacked them from him (product manager for PCB).

It's easy to figure out once you've updated the firmware of the CC...

my CC is ver29, which I think is the latest. My einstein is 173-ver20, which needs updating. I put on an microSDcard, put in light, plugged in cable, no flickering screen, not updated.

It took a couple tries to update mine. Make sure it's seated all the way in and then turn it on and off until it kicks in.

Ver29 seems to be the newest version. Don't know about the Einsteins.

Will the einsteins have built in handles in the future? I know it's an added cost, but it would be handy to have when walking to and fro between the light bag and the light stand on shoots.
