Pentax does have a couple leaf shutter lenses available. That should help.

Pentax 645 glass does well adapted to either CCD sensor cameras or CMOS sensor cameras ?
Or 645 glass does well only adapted to CMOS sensors ?

I find more purple fringing from my Pentax lenses on my CCD dslrs. Same lenses show less CA via CMOS.

That 33-55mm FA is incredibly rare, I've never seen one for sale.
Whats it usually trade for ?
Whats 33mm translate to on the crop format 33x44mm sensor ?
Is is still wide or just normal ?

At the Tokyo show one fellow commented on the obvious purple fringing he saw on the playback screen using the ONE newly designed for digital 645D kit lens. So from the get~go the ONE new lens shows strong chromatic aberations just some 5 years after the 645D camera was set to launch at 2005 PIE Show in Japan.
You'd think they would have had the time to improve this ?
Or launched more than one digitally optimized lens since they're 5 years late ?

Having owned Pentax for 8 years now, "coming soon" to Pentax can mean two or three years down the road once they show product pictures of new lenses.

Seriously, I am being serious

Pentax paraded their full frame K Mount in February 2001
Thats 9 years 2 months ago now & no hint of 24x36mm full frame K Mount on the horizion:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0102/01021106pentaxdigitalslr.asp

I'd say you buy a 645D in May 2010 & maybe you'll wait months, or years for this wider lens or wider lenses Pentax says they're offering "soon"

In the Luminous Landscape interview Pentax are already talking about next 645D they'll offer having CMOS sensor instead of CCD sensor. I wonder why Pentax are abandoning CCD technology before the 645D CCD camera is available in Japan for delivery ?

I read that to mean that they are not happy about the focal length range at the low end - and not the quality of the lenses. So, the FA 33-55mm or FA 35mm is not wide enough and not that it is an inferior optic. Plenty of these two lenses have been used by high end 35mm DSLR shooters and the ZOERK adapters for panorama type photograph with no complaints about the quality of these lenses.

I have seen a few for sale in the last couple of years, so I agree it is quite rare.

It usually sells for $1000 - 1200 USD.

On a 645D it is the equivalent to a 45-85mm on a 645/645N/645NII film body.

That translates to a 28-50mm on a full frame 35mm body when comparing its field of view on the 645D.

This lens on a 645/645N/645NII film body is equivalent to the field of view of a 20-35mm lens on a full frame 35mm body.

It is a very nicely made lens and I have begun to enjoy using mine.

Yep I have one too for shooting interiors on a 5D and I was going to sell it
but now im in the process of mounting it on my Mamiya 645 super.

its a lovely lens mostly plastic though. with the Zoerk PSA I can get a FOV
of about 20mm from 3 stitched images.

Well, British Journal of Photography is reporting that the Pentax 645D will be released in Europe in December. I assume therefore, it was pretty successful in Japan and enough interest to start to move the camera internationally. In the UK, the prices will be: £9000 for the body only, or £10,000 with the DFA 55mm 645 SDM lens.

But still not in the US?

Speaking of MF cameras, did you hear about the insane 80MP Leaf digital back they released?

Yes. What is interesting that this is being released by Leaf, which is now part of Phase One. How does Phase One decide to release a product under the Leaf name or the Phase One name? What value do they see in keeping both brand names active, and how do they attenpt to differentiate them? Of course, this is not a topic for a Pentax 645D thread, but interesting none the less.

Has anyone seen a price yet for the Leaf 80MP back? The 80MP number sounds impressive until you think that it likely only offers around a 20% improvement in resolution over the Pentax 645's 40MP. I bet the price is more then 20% more!

$31,995. Not as good as price per pixel as the Pentax, but better than many other digital backs.

Wow! I'm blown away in just the first sentence of two.

...80MP 53.7 x 40.3mm CCD sensors, 3.5" touch screen LCDs, 12-stop dynamic range and 80-800 ISO range. The Aptus-II 12R adds an internal rotating sensor system which allows users to change from portrait to landscape orientation without removing the back...

Full 12 stops - that's the entire range of video! Awesome!

I wonder what the touch screen allows one to do with it?

What, you don't have $32K laying around! Anything over a few hundred bucks is expensive to me. Not long ago though, the highest end MFDB prices were quite a bit more.

i don't know where they would get it from. the reason that CCD is still common in MFD backs although CMOS is now more or less the only type of small format sensor is that CCD production for image sensors is done on well established foundry lines that are pretty much not doing anything else and are old enough to have been paid for. i can see DALSA or some other sensor designer wanting to get an OEM to produce cameras using their new CMOS sensor but you know as well as i that the bleeding edge always costs more. a medium format sensor would be a low volume thing and a few thousand a year would be very expensive even on volume discount.

Just read on DP Review that Pentax has announced at Photokina that the 645D will be available soon "globally". $9,999 in the States, body only (list price). Pretty amazing value relatively speaking. It's less than 1/2 the price of the Leica S2 ($23K), and they both seem to have approx the same size sensor, with IQ probably being indistinguishable from each other.

It appears that the Pentax 645D is already putting downward price pressure on the competitions offerings. Hasselblad is now offering an H4D-31 €9,995 kit that includes an 80mm lens. Still more $$ and fewer MP then the Pentax but perhaps Hasselblad is banking on their name and availability/support system.

Well, the BJoP had a very very good source on that one! Compare what they said to today's announcement. I wonder where those E-Bay 645D sellers will offload their grey market stock?
