I just got a quote from Canon Irvine on a replacement shutter for my 5D mk1, $453.00, with CPS gold discount, that price was a little higher than I was expecting, oh well, what are you gonna do right.
What did you all pay for your 5D mk1 shutter replacements?
Almost everything seems to get more expensive, so higher camera repair prices are no surprise. Even so I bet it's extremely difficult to break even fixing cameras let alone turn a profit.
453 is absurd. It's all marketing. If your gonna drop nearly$450 on a 5D you already paid for (new or used), you might as well look at the new 5D or a 1 series as far as cost goes. It's one of several, simple marketing plans. I don't agree with it, so don't jump on me because you own a mark2 or 1 series body.
Canon is pushing the 5D out of the market (sales and support), and pushing it fast. This is what large manufacturers do when they want to sell newer products and disregard "older" products. Canon will charge you less for a 1 series shutter replacement than a 5D, for a few different reasons. Go figure. Well it figures they are just trying to push you a little bit more to spend what you spent the first time.............and that would be a new 5D or the new, highly acclaimed, video-enabled 7d!
So, in retrospect, $453 isn't a lot. I mean, they can charge whatever they want, right?
It might be that the 5d has not experienced a lot of early failures and your seeing the true price (before angry owners start yelling at Canon "this shutter is rated for 200k and I only got 15k...")
Yet another reason to buy a low milage body as you have more grounds to complain about shutter replacement cost.
Would you sell a film camera for scrap because it runs out of film?
If the shutter lasts 50k and costs $453 to replace, that's like getting 2083 rolls of 24-exposure film, with cost of processing and scanning to digital files included, for 22 cents per roll.
my friend had his replaced and i thought he said it was $135 or $235. His shutter count was at 150k. this was also done in irvine. im kinda surprised at $453.
You mean for an old beater with 150,000 shutter cycles? New old stock is going for 4 times that amount. I sold a minty 5D a few months back for $1350. I've yet to see a 5D in decent condition go for less than $1000.

Ya, it's at Irvine still, the parts they listed as being replaced are: shutter box and shutter.
That's not the same as "replacing the shutter". Why do you need a new shutter box?
If there's a problem that was part of the original build, I'd argue for them to replace it a zero charge, or at least a 50% discount. In short, you're either beting taken to the cleaners or they're trying to dissuade you for fixing it, which is entirely possible.
People will have to start getting used to Canon/Nikon/etc. forcing us to buy new cameras by screwing us on the repairs. It going to happen. They will not be stocking lots of parts for these things.....
