It's likely when the shutter imploded it damaged the shutter box. And that does explain the high cost.
People will have to start getting used to Canon/Nikon/etc. forcing us to buy new cameras by screwing us on the repairs. It going to happen. They will not be stocking lots of parts for these things.....
I've been using Canon since 1990 and have owned many dozens of cameras and lenses. I've needed very few repairs and the few I needed were usually prompt and well done. Several were done for free outside of warranty. My 70-200 4L was blurry on the left side and they fixed it for free 4 years after I bought it. I was expecting to pay and the counter girl volunteered the comp. I'd hardly describe Canon Service as "screwing us." They have plenty of overhead and American techs get paid a high hourly wage. If they didn't charge enough to cover the high cost of doing business in the USA we'd soon be sending our gear to a 3rd world country for warranty repairs...

Ouch. My 5D is around 70K on the shutter. At that price I might as well get a used 5D with low shutter count and sell my broken 5D for scrap .
.........with an old shutter that is about to cost you $453?
I too am surprised at the quote they gave you, but I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go ahead and do it. The 5D is a fine camera, well worth the investment.

That's not the same as "replacing the shutter". Why do you need a new shutter box?
If there's a problem that was part of the original build, I'd argue for them to replace it a zero charge, or at least a 50% discount. In short, you're either beting taken to the cleaners or they're trying to dissuade you for fixing it, which is entirely possible.

I have no idea why they have to replace the shutter box, alls I know is the shutter blades are broke.

I totally agree with you on that, Canon Irvine has always done me right, with low repair costs and prompt service, but $450.00 for a shutter kinda seems a bit high, I'll call them Monday to get some clarification.
I will pay it though if I cant get them to lower it, even though it's 1 of 2 back up camera, just love them 5D files.

Here's a thought. Why not ask them?
Find out how much it is to replace the shutter only. Then find what the problem is with the mirror/shutter box, the reasons it needs to be replaced, what might have caused the problem (i.e., a mfg defect) and what might happen if you don''t replace it. When you know that, then you can make a decision on the repair.

Everyone here is just guessing...
Thanks James, I actually am going to be calling them Monday to ask these very same questions, my reason for starting this thread was to get an idea of what others have paid, so as to give me an idea if this $450.00 is higher price than usual which I think it is, but a little verification on others repair costs is nice.
I talked to Chris Canada at Irvine Factory Service Center today, here's the reason for the high price:
When Canon replaces the shutter on a 5D mk1, if the camera has over 100K actuations on it, it's there policy that they also replace the Mirror Box Assembly ($200.00 part) which also have moving parts, my camera had 175K on it.
