p.1 #1 · New Sigma 85mm f1.4 (and more!)

Lenses for full frame:

  1. 85mm f/1.4 EX HSM
  2. 70-200mm f/2.8 EX OS HSM
  3. 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 OS HSM

Lenses for APS-C format:

  1. 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM
  2. 17-50mm f/2.8 DC OS HSM

Interesting that neither the 8-16mm nor the 50-500mm lens has the EX designation.

Comparison of Sigma's MTF charts for older & newer lenses:

Hmm everyone is joining the 17-50 2.8 game now, interesting to see the sigma vs. the tamron in pricing and perf.
I doubt the 85 1.4 would beat the samyang 85 1.4, but it is autofocus so should sit in it's own attractive spot.

If the Sigma 50mm f1.4 is any indication, Sigma's 85mm will be giving the 85L a run for its money.

Only lenses with constant aperture get the "EX" badge so that doesn't mean anything
The 8-16 and 70-200 sound extremely interesting...

The $250 samyang 1.4 gives the 85L a run for its money i'm sure the alt gang will be here eventually to agree with me...

Wow, I was just wishing today that Sigma made a 85 f/1.4!!!

And of course, I just bought a used 150-500mm... go figure!

Links seem to be bad or the website is in trouble. Is it just me?

Not true. The 12-24 is an EX and it isn't constant aperture.

No idea... but I have a sinking feeling that 85mm f/1.4 lens will cost a lot. The old Nikkor AF 85mm f1.4 costs $1,150, even though it has no motor. The ZE 85mm f/1.4 is $1,300 and it has no auto focus at all.

Sigma was very bold in giving their 50mm f/1.4 lens a comparable price to the Nikkor and Zeiss versions. I don't think they'll do the same for the 85mm. However, I would expect it to be in the neighborhood of $1,000...

They changed that some time ago... not sure when but I think a year or so?
No lens with variable aperture got the EX badge since then but all (?) those with constant aperture.

Wouldn't be worth it to me. The Canon 85 1.8 is a fantastic lens optically (very sharp with excellent bokeh) along with very fast AF, plus the price is very reasonable.

I have the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. That's another story because the Siggy has much smoother bokeh than the Canon and its worth the extra money to me.

What I'd really like to see from Sigma is full frame 35mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 - that I would buy.

Its also a shame that Sigma or Tamron don't make a 24/28-70/75 f/2.8 with OS.

EF 85mm f/1.8 - $370
EF 85mm f/1.2 - $1950

I'm just glad that Sigma gives us a choice between those two extremes.

Nope - 10-20 4-5.6 is still an EX, as is the 18-50 2.8 and it looks like the new 17-50 IS getting the EX designation according to DPreview.

(p.s. will be very interested to see how these perform - nice to have Sigma keep the pressure on...have to agree that a 24-70 OS would have been nice though)

The 50-500 OS is not EX, so is it safe to assume it is worse than the older 50-500? The 95 mm filter is crazy for an f/6.3 lens.
