*AF quite brisk AND accurate
*wide open (f4) very good 'til about 25-30 yds
*f5.6 seems to be the sweet spot
*initial thoughts, it's pretty close to the 300 f2.8/TC-1.4E II combo in IQ at f5.6
Here are some shots from this morning, @ f5.6 (last 2 are wide open) handheld w/Bushhawk.
I'll be testing the 300/70-200 f2.8 VR's in the next few days. ~60% crops SOOC Thanks for playin'

Thank you for posting these. I had a post up earlier today asking if anyone had the chance to try this combo yet. So if you don't mind a few quick questions for you:
1) Do you notice a significant change in focus speed using the converter? You said it was snappy, but does it need to hunt a little to lock on?
2) You mention AF good wide open until about 25-30 yards? Is that because inside of that range AF was an issue?
3) These images look pretty good to me. My intent with this would be to shoot "wide open" at F4. So based on your comments 5.6 appears to be better IQ than f4 is that correct?
I have the 200 2.0 and would use this combo on a D700 and D2xs
It's great to see some pictures w/o two feet of snow in them.

Hey Jack, thanks...and a few quick answers for ya then.
1) No hunting, light was decent but I did some indoor stuff last night and it leaped into focus too.
I'd say the speed was down ~ 25% like the 1.7, think Nikon 'built that in". I'm convinced with this lens
you could AF thru a 2 liter bottle of club soda.
2) I didn't say that. Wide open IQ/sharpness using TC's on primes always looks better under 100'
This combo no exception, AF not affected by distance...I shot full/limiter, inside and out/near and far.
3) Keep in mind these were handheld fast grabs If my target was over 30 yds I'd stop down
or use a longer combo to fill the frame. My original idea was to use the 200 w/2.0 and the 300 w/1.7
for those times I can't get close enough with naked glass. HTH
Nice shots, seems pretty good. I would appreciate your thoughts comparing it to the 1.7x. Do you think it's worth the purchase?

Hey, Jim! Thank you, not my best work but perhaps the quickest! I'm holding judgement until
I run it thru the 300 f2.8 and even the 70-200 just for grins. It's gonna have to blow my mind if it
wants to replace my 1.7 on the 300 for BIF. Stay tuned.

Trust me I know. I have seen your work and its stellar and you're one of the reasons I picked up this lens. I was quite surprised, and a bit disappointed, when I saw your 200 f/2 in the B/S forum. Hopefully things work out and your able to pick up another soon.
Thanks for that, Greg. I'm using the 300 f2.8 VR at Bosque for the next few weeks so it came down to selling this
and a D300/grip to raise some capital. It's like choosing to keep only one of your children, almost.
