Will be very interested in seeing what it does on the 70-200mm f2.8 VR-I. The question for me will be, "Is it sharp enough to replace my 80-400mm VR with," or "Will it likely match 300mm f4 + TC-17E?"

I used mine 70/200 VR1 + 2EIII, at polo on a D90, I'm happy with the TC

This is an old thread by now, but I just picked up the 200/2VR and at some point in the coming weeks will want a TC, and I am I am wondering about the TC17II vs. The TC20III. Has anyone compared those for sharpness up close and at distance, as well as AF speed?

Carsten, the TC-14E II you won't even know it's there. Between the 1.7 and 2.0 I preferred
the 1.7 and a slight crop...AF was a tad snappier too. Could have had a questionable
copy of the 2.0 III (2nd owner) but will say any TC on the 200 f2 VR preformed better than
on the 300f2.8/70-200 VR's. I find myself w/o the 300 f2.8, keeping the 200 f2 for the stop
shooting rodeo under the lights. I'd like to give another copy of the 2.0 III a try since
200 as my long lens is rather anemic for BIF Congrats on your new lens!

I use the 200 vr1 and the new tc-III and it basically stays glued to my D300S. Frankly, I'm shocked at how well that combo works together. Now I know why Nikon hasn't come out with a 400 f4

Hmm, one vote for TC17II slightly better than TC20III, and one vote for TC20III great I guess I can't go wrong either way. Originally I thought I would start with the TC20III and TC14II, then add a DX camera, and eventually the 400/2.8, if I keep wanting more reach (no talk of need around here ). Now I am thinking that I am not that picky about having the exact focal length I need, so maybe just get the TC17II and be done for now? It is a lot cheaper than the TC20III and the used market is healthy.

Nice!

I started a 200/2 thread for all versions of this lens. There doesn't appear to be any older thread catering to all 3 versions. I hope to use this lens more soon, especially once the weather starts to improve a bit. Berlin is dark and grey and dreary most of the time this time of year. Today is sunny, but I don't have the free time until tomorrow.
