Sorry but you don't seem to grasp the concept that the 7D really isn't in the same league as the MKIV. This is my opinion of course but it is based on owning both.

I NEVER said it was in the same league.

EDIT: Here is what I DID say: I think the point a lot of people are missing is that the 7D's performance to price ratio is far better than that of the 1DIV. Not only that but not every photog is the same, some covet certain aspects more than others. Like size, weight, and pixel density for example--if these are all essential factors to you its easy to see why some people would prefer the 7D to the 1DIV, especially given the price differential. Its proven the 7D can perform up to standards as far as wildlife/action photography is concerned.

Based on 1D IV shots I've seen ..I don't think it's worth 3x 7D ...take that!

I agree that mk IV overpriced, but only because of "everybody needed " video, to me that is Japanese companies tactics to reduce loss in video camcorders sale they are experiencing in compare to SLR. Again that is my opinion, I might be wrong in this.

I hope you saw this mk IV shots? Would be good to see something close made by 7D

Based on shots from my original 1D I don't think the 7D's worth 4 times the 1D - right back!

You can search for Conrad Tan's or Kiran's BIF shots in Nature&Wildlife forum. Again it's not worth 3x of 7Ds price .

You're just mincing words but I agree that the 7D has closed the gap substantially. Why don't we leave it at that.

Based on my grandma's shots with S400 IXUS 1D IV it's not worth 25x the S400. Checkmate.....give it up .

Money argument could not be used in any situation. Someone from iPhone forum could say that any slr should not cost more than iPhone too....

Based on shots I saw it is not even 1D mk III league too, it is improved 50D with video nothing more than this. From same league I would prefer 20D/40D even better. Less mpx, better larger pixels, great IQ and same 1.6 crop.

The 20D/40D have larger BUT poorer pixels that use old technology.

Could you please elaborate "poorer old technology" words?
Also I hope you don't want me to find post from physics phd explaining sensor limits and numbers of pixels per sensor size and limitations of new "better" technology sticking 18mpx into tiny-mini sized sensor?

^Based on the above image (the post of which has since been deleted?), the 50D is easily the worst and the 5D2 the best of the group.

I prefer the D5000 over the 7D based on detail and noise considered together up to ISO 1600. At ISO 3200, it becomes a coin toss, and at ISO 6400, the 7D pulls ahead of the D5000.

Clarkvision, sensor full well capacity multiplied by pixel count:

20D / 30D: 51400* 8.18MP = 420 G e-
40D: 43400 * 10.08 MP = 437 G e-
50D: 27300 * 15.05 MP = 411 G e-
7D: 24800 * 17.92 MP = 444 Ge-

Per area sensor efficiency is best for the new 7D technology.

I prefer S400 IXUS compare to D5000 based on detail and noise per your definition of comparison.

Mincing words? Hardly. Again I never even suggested the two were "in the same league" rather that the 7D offers a lot of what the 1DIV does at a significantly lower cost and for many the 1DIV is not worth the price difference. Now, having said that, we can leave it at that

I want to jump in on this..... please .... please
that PhD better be working at one of the foundries that make CMOS or all bets are off. Even then said Phd better have current node technology experience or it is a mute point. ... okay.....just playin'.

I would not have said poor old technology - just an older node. the 40D is 2-4 nodes from the 7D. But it is hard to tell since canon is pretty typed lip.

Do we know if canon has switched in circuit size technology between these models?

Later,
_Mark

I am not sure what point you are trying to make since I didn't see the S400 IXUS in the test photos that someone else provided that I linked to.

Canon has been using a 200nm technology since at least the 20D in 2004.
The circuitry size on all models since then is the same.

There are indications that they might be switching to a 180nm process soon (maybe even a hybrid 180/135nm process).

My guess is that sensors made on this process will show up first in the 1D(s)V or the 7DII.

We'll see. A change is in the air for sure. Their current technology is pretty much maxed out.

Why all the argument about the damn 7D in a D3s vs 1D4 thread? Take your battles elsewhere. As far as I'm concerned Canon has dropped the bloody ball by giving in to the megapixel wars. I don't think most of their lenses can out-resolve these sensors.

Looks like us Canon shooters have enjoyed our time on the up and up, and we might have to be in for some hard times a la the Nikon D2H days. Now Nikon has the D3s/D3x, the 14-24/2.8 *and* the newly announced 24/1.4 --> that's all I really need... Time to switch?

Please do. Nikon would like to take your money...$2200 for a 24 f/1.4 ? .. ah I forgot you only need 2 lenses .
