Why all the argument about the damn 7D in a D3s vs 1D4 thread? Take your battles elsewhere. As far as I'm concerned Canon has dropped the bloody ball by giving in to the megapixel wars. I don't think most of their lenses can out-resolve these sensors.
Looks like us Canon shooters have enjoyed our time on the up and up, and we might have to be in for some hard times a la the Nikon D2H days. Now Nikon has the D3s/D3x, the 14-24/2.8 *and* the newly announced 24/1.4 --> that's all I really need... Time to switch?
Sure. If you don't need more than 12Mp and want the very best high ISO performanance, Nikon's your game.

And let's not forget that most of that advantage can be removed by PP anyway - but PP can't put resolution and detail back that wasn't there in the first place...

Do you think I can expect the same reach with a D3x/24/1.4 as I'm getting with my MKIV / 500? If so I will switch too. I could sell a lot of lenses!
Well I just got a 16-35 II to put on my 1d4 and it opened up a whole new world for me; but the great Nikon 14-24 probably has an edge; especially on a FF body.
Problem is about 70% of my shots are done using my 500/f4. I would need a d3 and a 600/f4 to get the same reach. I could use a 300/2.8 to match a d3 and a 400/f8.
Ignoring the problems a weak old white guy like me would have man handling a 600/f4 or a 400/2.8 (I can manage the 500 on a monopod, and hand hold at times) there is the matter of about $US5k price difference.
Not to dis Nikon at the short end; but I can live with my 16-35 and I would definitely want the Canon combination at the long end.
I think the 5D mk2 should have been included inthis discussion. The 5D MK2 IMHO has better ISO performance than the 1D mk3. i would have like to see the 5D images next to the others.
I currently own two 1D3 and i use them primarily for weddings. I don't see myself moving up to the 1D4 for a loong time. I prefer to stay at 10mp. I have no intention of dealing with large files as far as work flow. And storage is also an issue.
I don't shoot in servo mode so if my 1D bodies have an issue with tracking i would'nt know about it since i shoot mostly in one shot mode. The lithium battery last all day.
If i had the choice between the 1D3 or the 7D.....i would buy a clean used 1D3
for a few hundred dollars more over a new 7D. Your getting so much more for
a few hundred dollars.
I've owned Nikon bodies and i'm not too happy with their bulky bodies. I hope
they totally redesign it. Canon 1D's just feels so much better in my hand than the D3's.
As long as I shoot bird, I may stay with canon.
I can have 1D4+Ef800/5.6IS with the price of D3s+600VR(+$400.00)..now talk about difference in pixels per duck.
