FIrst outing in terrible lighting on the A850 CY35-70!

Always wanted one of these and I think I might be one of the few who have it in Alpha mount!

First lens I've ever had in MF where it seems the infinity focus is correct... I hope.

I'll do a gear shot later on, it fits the body very nicely and feels very well balanced.

Man, the build quality on this lens is possibly the most impressive zoom lens I've used. The damping couldn't be more perfect.

:S Sony sensors produce such awesome colors. I can't wait for the A900 replacement so I can switch to them and get IBIS on all my lenses.

IBIS only works if your lens is chipped which is actually very easy to do.

If its not chipped, it assumes 50mm from what I recall. However, I don't think I've ever seen a chip for a zoom lens aftermarket.

Luckily, I'm pretty sure Minolta designed the A900 and A850 as the IBIS switch is a big ass switch on the back of the camera. There ergonomics of these are just marvelous.

Most owners of this lens are happy with it and tend to hold onto them - I for one - highly recommended.

Originally produced by Zeiss for Contax - some of these lenses have been "converted" using an after market Leitax adapter to Nikon, Sony, Canon & etc mounts. You can also use a simple AF confirm adapter from E-bay.

Shooting a set with a model last night. Simple one strobe off camera setup. Noticed this morning a strange artefact (shot in portrait mode 90CCW rotation, so must be bottom line):

100% crop
http://www.3byk.org/imgposts/cy3570/IMG_3455wtf.jpg

Scanlines Hmm..also shot 21/2.8, Rokkor58 and Mamiya 85/1.9 that night, but can't see anything similar in other shots. Must be the flash attribute...

This particular is shot at 5.6, I recall...

Just checked few random shots...this is only present in 35-70 shots with off camera flash.

How do you trigger your off camera flash? Some remote flash triggers are known to interfere with 5D.

Mirkoc: That is absolutely correct. I use Cactus V4 right now.
Afaik, interference shows at 1/200-250s range and was a well known issue.
This is really weird - I shot a set before with 35-70 and remote trigger and didn't see a hint of this artefact...
But I am inclined to believe that this is indeed a trigger issue. Will have to shoot a bunch of test shots again..

Upon closer examination, it appears to be signal interference. Not much to do except to shield the trigger best I can..

OK, so that explains why very old threads have been popping up on the forum lately... Arhcived threads can be brought back to life. Didn't know that.

Anyway, this is a good thread to bump now that I own this lens

Good to know too. There are some hidden gems in the Archive. I would like to see more of the 35-70mm images now that we have A7/Fuji and other mirrorless marvels ready to exploit this little master

Let me tell you leo, the a7r loves the 35-70 to death, lol, it brings out all the subtlety of the colour and microncontrast the zoom has in abundance. Best used above 45mm, a little CA appears at the short end with the tough new taskmistress.

While on the subject, what I think the a7r does to most (depressingly many) lenses is this: where lower res sensors flatten out the best each lens has (in the centre regions) so the outer frame and corners look not bad at all, the a7r takes the centre to a higher level (often much higher) and outer frame and corners suddenly look weak, being far below.

It also exposes related weaknesses that underlie these frame areas such as curvature and sudden drops in microcontrast. Happily the 35-70 is close to the top of the pile, after 20 years...

Phillip,
I could not agree more strongly.
I have a selection of Canon L primes and zooms, now the ZE551.8 and soon the 24-70, but the Contax zoom and 28mm are on my camera more than any other lens. The zoom also offers a 1:1 macro!
