p.5 #1 · Mark IV Firmware 1.0.6 problems

I ran over to the wharf after reading your post and blasted off about 600 frames with my 500 f4.5L (I know different lens). Overcast conditions didn't make for the best shooting however. I did have 2 sequences like what you described where the bird flying towards me filled the frame and was a total blur. The AF in servo does feel different from the first time I used it but my keeper rate was at least 80% and that was with trying AF settings all over the place. One change I made that I think I'm going to change back is the shutter release lagtime. I had it on the default and then changed it to the faster setting (ala Miller's blog) and I'm wondering if that's why the camera's servo feels more jumpy this time around.

If I'm not wrong flashing means you have no AF in all servo

Can I ask a bit of a dumb question. With the ring of fire and servo selected, am I supposed to get a flashing af focus point to confirm focus or is that with a selected AF point only?

How I read it is when you're in full 45 auto point selection you don't and when you're in CP with III-8 set to 3 (expand to all 45) you do. That's how my cam works anyhow.

I think he's talking about the actual red FP square. You can watch them change to different AF points in the mode I talked about above.

Pierre,
If you can extract it somehow we'll all love ya....

I've been on the phone to the tech guys at my dealer who say that it is not possible to extract the firmware from the camera

I guess it's now up to Canon to release a new v1.0.7 asap or make 1.0.4 available again.

Good luck.

Pierre.

Not a bad idea to try sending it in.

Tell them to send you an overnight label and maybe you will get it back this week.

Again, I was reviewing the images from last Sunday and out of 400+ shots I may have 20-30 usable, I have entire sequences out of focus…… sorry Canon but this is unacceptable

Sounds like my 5DII. Anyway, when Canon released firmware 1.0.6, did the release notes say anything about changes to the AF on the camera?

If Canon didn't advertise any tweaks to the AF, let's assume for the moment they didn't make any changes. That suggests that nothing has changed on the AF system and the cameras were jacked from the beginning - it's just that nobody noticed it until now.

Anyone know?

The Winter Olympics opening ceremony is in less than three weeks and after the MkIII AF problems there is a lot riding on this for Canon. It would be commercial suicide if they were to let their pro guys use another camera body that did not hold focus on a moving target.

I think your best option is to call Canon tech and get them to mail you the original firmware file or make it available for download. If you're not with CPN / CPS find someone who is and get them to call. Whilst I'm sure a fix is top of their to-do list, it wouldn't hurt if a few people called them up just to remind them of the urgency.

Pierre.

Being only a Silver CPS member it takes up 7 business days if everything goes according to plan

Well, I did call canon and I'm also CPS member and they told me v.1.0.4 is not available any more end of the story….

I'm not saying there isn't a potential issue with 1.0.6 and you can color me wrong but I think most folks would be well advised to leave most of the settings at default until you get more comfortable with the camera. After a short period of use you will quickly discover which (if any) of the settings need tweaked.

Just because this Miller guy posted some settings doesn't mean they are now the defacto standard for how a 1-series is supposed to be setup.

I've been shooting with a pair of MkIII's for two years and upon delivery of my MkIV I simply changed a couple settings to make the displays, buttons and menus work like my MkIII and went out to shoot basketball. It worked fantastic.

As time goes on I'm sure there may be a few tweaks here and there but I'm certainly not about to blindly enter some unknown guys settings and hope they work for me.

I cant believe that you cant backup the orig firmware before you update. Just about anything else that you have to update warns you to backup the firmware first (motherboards etc).

I would be quite strongly onto canon asking/demanding that you get the earlier Firmware. Afterall thats what YOUR camera came with and that whats worked for you. so you just want to put it back to how you bought it. You own the camera and you are under no obligation from canon to update but you have to trust them about the update that they want you to have as you cant go back.
Didn't the update cure a problem with SLOW moving things comming towards you?

I saw a post somewhere saying Canon changed the FW loader to make it impossible to load an earlier release of the code. Is this fact or speculation?

Every 1-series camera I've ever owned allowed you to load whatever FW version you wanted by simply copying it to the CF and running the update routine.
