There is always a way to transition, although it can take time. I don't presume that all 50 lenses are important and in use. Maybe a dozen? So you could start there... But maybe the 5DIV will come soon with more similar characteristics to the D800. Do you even like the Nikon body styles?
Of course all 50 lenses are not important, not even dozen are in actual use. Big part of the collection are 20+ old different 50mm lenses, which I have been buying cheaply from eBay in order to be able to make one day study different renderings of various planar based designs, as well as tessar based etc.
I have only few times used D700 (and some bigger model maybe D3 something) and with Nikon lenses I really liked the AF. Everything else was quite logical, but I hated that you had to focus by half pressing the shutter (I have never used anything else than thumb button for AF, it was really difficult to adjust using this point-and-shoot method). However since I don't use any AF-glass for my own shooting and if I shoot few weddings now and then with AF-glass, I really don't care as long as it does what it's supposed to do. When I do my normal shooting I'm having camera on tripod, exposure on manual mode, focusing and composing via live view (which sucked somehow in D700, maybe just too strong AA-filter in D700) so the camera controls etc. really don't matter that much as long as I don't have to use menus for anything. More or less all current cameras have 95% of their functions something useless, which I will never use - If I would get camera just for my needs, it would be just the lens mount, mirror chamber (without mirror, live view is enough for me...), sensor, battery, CF/SD slot, LCD-display, 4 dials (WB, ISO, shutterspeed, aperture), menu for selecting video mode (live view @ shooting aperture)/exposure simulation(live view @ max aperture) mode and few other options in weatherproof and shockproof enclosure having hotshoe, remote shutter plug and Arca-Swiss L-bracket...
As situation is today D800E seems to have better image quality (for me it's mainly better(=deeper cut) color filters, but sure the added resolution won't do any harm) than Canons, even it would not cost that much to switch it would be enormous effort to buy and sell the stuff. So I'm just going to keep shooting with 5DmkII bodies. I don't believe 5DmkIV is coming soon, mkIII just came out, and even it's sensor is joke, I doubt Canon will do anything about it for few years.

Yes, I see this, and more and more, I am facing the same, but without your resolve. I simply reluctantly add the lenses I would like. I imagine I will add the 85P, 35/1.4D and 25/2D with time, in that order.
New problem becomes for me if I "solve" issue by getting 1,4/35; having two kits of lenses!! - I don't have strength to carry 25, 1,4/35, 85P and 100P (of which 2 in 5DmkII bodies) in field, just too much weight, since almost always I also need to take some 180-200mm with me as well (most often Contax 3.5/200 or Leica 80-200/4). This also would cause too much lens changes (the primary reason why I went to 2 body shooting is to avoid lens changes and allowing easy usage of two different focal lengths). I try to plan what I shoot, but if I find something interesting it will replace my plan - e.g. many times I have went to photograph macros but ended up shooting cascades/waterfalls.
This would become much easier if we would get 200mm makro lens (when rest of my kit quite naturally would become 85P, 1,4/35 and 25[/or 21 depending on shooting location]), but for reason or another Zeiss is not making anything longer than 100mm into ZE/ZF series, so 100MP comes along many times just because 85P is too short to be longest lens and/or not having macro lens if not taking 100MP with me.
Lieutenant Z, 2nd image is great even bokeh looks weird, really good point of view.

Samuli: The weather has been very boring for sime time now and it shows. The train might have looked better with a slightly wider aparture although I'm not very fond of the 50/1.4 at 2.5 and wider.
I know, we typically have more or less same weather as you there. Depending on background complexity, subject-background-distance-ratio and subject distance I have been having "maximum aperture"-rule between f/2.8 and f/2 with 1,4/50. In days when I'm lazy e.g. this weekend, I just went and shoot f/2.8 all the time (unless more DOF was needed).
Bob, really great colors and textures in first and last of Minneapolis West Bank shots (set 1). And 1st one on 2nd set. Liked also compositions.
Gary, great contrast by colour / B&W background
Edwards, great to see more digital ZM-shots, thank you!
Grenache, "You guys have to slow down." - I doubt that is going to happen, spring going on northern hemispehere
Uzay, you have great eye for this kind of photos. Liked #1, #9 (red things inside cages in white room) and last (posters and cat).
One from my recent series "String and ropes" - Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1,4/50 @ f/4, 1/80s, ISO 100
