Well, thanks for trying to save me money, but I think I have solid proof that reasons exist for having both. For example, you have both Also, don't forget that I chose to keep both 50P and 50MP, so I am also susceptible to this disease. I have also tried it personally and like it very much.

Well, if I could start from scratch and have zero dependency to Canon (50+ lenses, of which 2 works in Nikon...) I would get 2x D800, ZF25, ZF50P, ZF100MP. [EDIT: Assuming Zeiss doesn't have 180mm or 200mm lens (current situation), which would change this quite radically]

One additional problem I didn't mention (since I feel this might be rather unique problem of mine) is that I don't find any of the distagons to match the 85P photos, and I really would like to have two matching (from drawing style point of view) lenses on the camera bodies, if not shooting with normal lens. 25 and 100 make very nice pair, their rendering suits very well to each another. I have tried and tried to avoid getting 1,4/35, but maybe I'm just forced to get it - 85P just doesn't work "together" with 2/35 or 2/28 and 1,4/50 is too close in FOV.

carstenw wrote:
One reason I would like to have the 85P is the wider angle of view. It is a small difference most of the time, but a large difference on occasion. Another reason is the better hand-holdability and wider aperture when ultimate image quality isn't the top criterion. Another reason is for portraits in controlled conditions, where I think it delivers images with quite a different feel, more like the 50P. Finally, I just love the way it renders certain scenes, like your tree portraits. The 100MP is quite similar, but not the same.

I agree, specially for "environmental portraits" (of people) 85P has something which makes the subjects to look very real, the way how it draws the shape and volume of subjects at that magnification would be something I would miss if I would only have 100MP.

Sven, vignetting itself rarely is the issue (if I would bother doing post processing I might even add some). More often issues caused by vignetting are big problem for me, specially bokeh quality in corners. If you shoot the stuff I usually shoot, you will find out that bokeh quality in corners is problematic always f/2.8, most of the time f/3.2, sometimes f/3.5 and very rarely f/4 (but it happens). Like said this is not an issue if you shoot something 2m from camera, only for mid and large distances. If shooting macros the vignetting doesn't cause bokeh issues even at f/2, at least I don't remember it ever being problem. For close-ups f/2 has caused corner bokeh issues, but I don't never seeing any issues on close-ups with f/2.8. Toothwalker explained why very well in 25mm Distagon thread.

JimboinTas, thanks for posting the rocks in "fog". Have to find where I have lost my ND filters...

Agree with most things Samuli wrote about them. But not the vignetting. I don't think the 100 have much vignetting compared to the 85 or the other Zeiss lenses. And I don't agree about the vignetting at f/4. I would say it's (nearly) gone and a non issue at f/4. Just like he write it is at f/2,8 with the 85

Vignetting doesn't bother me at all, most of the time I leave it in, and it is easy enough to tweak.

One of my favorite aspects of Zeiss lenses are their vignetting when wide open. It's among the most pleasing I've seen and I tend to purposely incorporate that aspect into some compositions!

There is always a way to transition, although it can take time. I don't presume that all 50 lenses are important and in use. Maybe a dozen? So you could start there... But maybe the 5DIV will come soon with more similar characteristics to the D800. Do you even like the Nikon body styles?

Yes, I see this, and more and more, I am facing the same, but without your resolve. I simply reluctantly add the lenses I would like. I imagine I will add the 85P, 35/1.4D and 25/2D with time, in that order.

I agree, specially for "environmental portraits" (of people) 85P has something which makes the subjects to look very real, the way how it draws the shape and volume of subjects at that magnification would be something I would miss if I would only have 100MP.

Yes, the magnification (and perspective) difference is not usually important, but with some some subjects it is really important, and with the 100MP, I have the (slight) feeling of being an observer, some distance away, and with the 85P, I am there, with the subject. The feeling is very subtle, and only accumulated over time, but it is real.

Wow! So many nice photos!

A few comments.

Jaan, fantastic 3D in the branch shot.
Jochen, nice dramatic sky in surfer photo.
Lieutenant Z, I should have guessed it was Italy. Very nice indeed. 1,3 and 4 are outstanding. The wheel shots are all very nice too, beautiful saturated colors.
Lars, great shots at the market.
Reza, love the Sakura.
Dalmas, nice train shot. The panel shot has very nice 3D.
Akul, nice play with light and shadows, especially in the chairs photo.
Kevin, congrats for your first Zeiss lens. Excellent start
Samuli, nice rendering from both lenses. I couldn't tell which is which
Jimbointas, love the pebbles shot.
Frezeiss, both of your b/w shots are superb.
Bob, your last set is just superb. Love the subject matter, composition and color.
Gary, lovely young monk portrait.

You guys have to slow down. I am at least three pages behind. On this one, I really love the ferris wheel series and the "Road Closed" reflection in the puddle.

Here are some more from Whistler, BC. The fog and clouds were streaming through over the course of two hours, giving a totally different look of the place about every 15 minutes.

Wow, superb images in this thread yet again. Agh.. all these images make me want to start looking at Zeiss glass. Well, perhaps some day, when the kids are older and I get a chance to travel to nice places worthy of capturing with great glass. In the meantime, I'm content with just observing the work of others and practicing the art with lesser gear.

Anyway, I feel like commenting on a couple of sets. rji2goleez, the composition and framing is just spot on in your first set. Grenache, the first one in your series is really striking.

Of course all 50 lenses are not important, not even dozen are in actual use. Big part of the collection are 20+ old different 50mm lenses, which I have been buying cheaply from eBay in order to be able to make one day study different renderings of various planar based designs, as well as tessar based etc.

I have only few times used D700 (and some bigger model maybe D3 something) and with Nikon lenses I really liked the AF. Everything else was quite logical, but I hated that you had to focus by half pressing the shutter (I have never used anything else than thumb button for AF, it was really difficult to adjust using this point-and-shoot method). However since I don't use any AF-glass for my own shooting and if I shoot few weddings now and then with AF-glass, I really don't care as long as it does what it's supposed to do. When I do my normal shooting I'm having camera on tripod, exposure on manual mode, focusing and composing via live view (which sucked somehow in D700, maybe just too strong AA-filter in D700) so the camera controls etc. really don't matter that much as long as I don't have to use menus for anything. More or less all current cameras have 95% of their functions something useless, which I will never use - If I would get camera just for my needs, it would be just the lens mount, mirror chamber (without mirror, live view is enough for me...), sensor, battery, CF/SD slot, LCD-display, 4 dials (WB, ISO, shutterspeed, aperture), menu for selecting video mode (live view @ shooting aperture)/exposure simulation(live view @ max aperture) mode and few other options in weatherproof and shockproof enclosure having hotshoe, remote shutter plug and Arca-Swiss L-bracket...

As situation is today D800E seems to have better image quality (for me it's mainly better(=deeper cut) color filters, but sure the added resolution won't do any harm) than Canons, even it would not cost that much to switch it would be enormous effort to buy and sell the stuff. So I'm just going to keep shooting with 5DmkII bodies. I don't believe 5DmkIV is coming soon, mkIII just came out, and even it's sensor is joke, I doubt Canon will do anything about it for few years.

New problem becomes for me if I "solve" issue by getting 1,4/35; having two kits of lenses!! - I don't have strength to carry 25, 1,4/35, 85P and 100P (of which 2 in 5DmkII bodies) in field, just too much weight, since almost always I also need to take some 180-200mm with me as well (most often Contax 3.5/200 or Leica 80-200/4). This also would cause too much lens changes (the primary reason why I went to 2 body shooting is to avoid lens changes and allowing easy usage of two different focal lengths). I try to plan what I shoot, but if I find something interesting it will replace my plan - e.g. many times I have went to photograph macros but ended up shooting cascades/waterfalls.

This would become much easier if we would get 200mm makro lens (when rest of my kit quite naturally would become 85P, 1,4/35 and 25[/or 21 depending on shooting location]), but for reason or another Zeiss is not making anything longer than 100mm into ZE/ZF series, so 100MP comes along many times just because 85P is too short to be longest lens and/or not having macro lens if not taking 100MP with me.

Lieutenant Z, 2nd image is great even bokeh looks weird, really good point of view.

Samuli: The weather has been very boring for sime time now and it shows. The train might have looked better with a slightly wider aparture although I'm not very fond of the 50/1.4 at 2.5 and wider.

I know, we typically have more or less same weather as you there. Depending on background complexity, subject-background-distance-ratio and subject distance I have been having "maximum aperture"-rule between f/2.8 and f/2 with 1,4/50. In days when I'm lazy e.g. this weekend, I just went and shoot f/2.8 all the time (unless more DOF was needed).

Bob, really great colors and textures in first and last of Minneapolis West Bank shots (set 1). And 1st one on 2nd set. Liked also compositions.

Gary, great contrast by colour / B&W background

Edwards, great to see more digital ZM-shots, thank you!

Grenache, "You guys have to slow down." - I doubt that is going to happen, spring going on northern hemispehere

Uzay, you have great eye for this kind of photos. Liked #1, #9 (red things inside cages in white room) and last (posters and cat).
