I have only been away a couple of days, and so many new great photos it's nearly impossible to comment on all. Some of my faveite picks where from Hugo, wiseguy, johnahill, Grenache, Edward, akul & Z
TSY87, liked your "Chasing the Sun" even it having "70's faded colors"
Ulff, I understand that bokeh behavior of 2/35 (and 2/28) discussed, don't annoy all people the same way. Even I'm used to see plenty of ugly bokeh, when that happens (when I can't compose to excluded that bright part of bokeh highlights) in my photos I just can't stand it.
Edward, great humour (in addition to one of the most intense yellows I have seen for while...I like the colors of GXR) in your photo; tiny Toyota with text "LIMO"
Gunzorro & Helena, I would have never guessed nobody likes green jugs...just so many thing wrong in that photo.
Me and my stupid rules, have to find some photo to post again... This was shoot for one friend to explain few optical characteristics, definitely not very interesting shot, but I like some qualities of it
Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1,4/85 @ f/2,8, 1/2000s, ISO 200 (ooops....some brainfart, should have shot ISO 100) [larger]
Samuli -- There may be many things wrong with the green jugs shot (as you say), but there are also some things very right about it. For one thing, I like it's asymmetrical construction, and for another, the moody richness of the colors -- so many rich greens. There is something odd and mysterious about it too. Anyway, I'm glad you showed it.
The Volvo shot is technically excellent, but boring subject matter -- no offence, just a nice industrial shot.
Great NYC images, Jim! My favorites are the Mercedes (great composition and color matching) and the Singer (the bokeh fits so well) pictures. Overall the colors and contrast are impressive in all images.
How do you like the 50P? I follow your postings with it and am not sure that I like its bokeh in general (especially compared to your Rokkor 58 1.2), although in some cases, like the singer, its fantastic and in other cases it is at least very interesting per se, but catches sometimes too much attention.
Rodluvan, Edward, Gunzorro, Lars - Thank you for your comments.
Weasel_Loader - 1.4/35 has thin focus zone compare to 2/35, which makes it challenging for focus. Like I mentioned, however, there are ways to achieve better rate ( although much harder with moving subject.) One is to analyze the correlation between focus dot and actual focus. Other is to use Live View.
Edward -I like the composition of cab and the cart in the back. And the sumo wrestler on top.
frezeiss - I like the #1 with the diagonal composition and the your PP. It has your signature look.
Lars - Gorgeous flower shot. Love the color and bokeh.
Samuli - Oh, I liked the green jag shot too!! Yes, the sky on the left is unfortunate, but it is really interesting to keep looking at. And I see strong 'dimensionality'. Impeccable subject isolation and highlight control on the Volvo shot.
twoeye - Nice rendition of pine leaves. What is a bit hard for me is the bright vertical OOF area behind is taking my attention away.
Jim - You shoot x1000 more people from NYC than me whenever you are here. Impressive. #4 stood out to me. Also, the last one feels like it is from Europe !
Ulff,
I am enjoying the 50P. As others have said in the past it can be a challenging lens at times to work with and would not recommend it as a first Zeiss lens for someone. It does have some focus shift, and just trying to nail focus with a f1.4 50mm on a 1DsII is a challenge in itself. As for the bokeh, i think its pretty good and at times it actually reminds of the rokkor, i think though the rokkor is a bit sharper wide open than the Planar is.I really like the focal length for street shots and when everything comes together with this lens its magic, i really like the drawing style of the lens. Also imo it has less micro contrast than other zeiss lenses , but still is capable of very good 3D.
-Jim
