Thank you, Akul, Kururu, Francesco.

So tough to keep up with the pace of the thread, but your wildly colored set from Japan, Kururu, was great (esp. the roof and red maple leaves shots). Absolutely love the texture of the road on your last night shot, Francesco. As for masterworks of this famous artist, let the time be the judge. Call me conservative, but I believe too many people these days are choosing scandalous paths to fame. Crisis of the genre?..

As for BW, I use Nik's Silver Efex Pro for all my BW/sepia conversions. Since so much depends on the mood and desired look of the photo, numerous ways to tweak BW conversion leaves a lot of space for creativity.

Here is one more 50P vs. 50MP comparison: the urban rumble. This time the 50P wins for me, hands down.

I agree. I think the 50 P renders cars, rock material, wood, copper (statues!) and other human made surfaces in a more interesting way than the 50 MP. If I was into street shoting I would probabely go for it. It might be somewhat of an aquired taste though. When I read through the early pages of this thread I never got that much out of the 50 P look, except maybe some of Philppes and Maktens stuff. It seems to me that the 50 P is heavier on the double-contour trick. I can see more of them on the cars in your shot, than with the 50 MP. It doesn't not always look good in the bokeh. Sure does in your sample. Well done comparison! I think it shows the difference better than the images out in the woods from the earlier discussions (and your tree shot). In those wood shots (Samuli?) I prefered the 50 MP rendering.

I'd like to know how the 50 P reacts in really drab light. It sure has a trick up it's sleeve when the light in right.

I am re-reading these threads, in an attempt to try to quantify what I am seeing with the 50MP and 50P, and I came across the quote below, which I had missed at the time.

(Samuli, I was not missing from the forum because of the vigorous discussions, but because I switched to Leica M8 exclusively for some years, and at the time FM was quite hostile towards Leica, with the term fanboy always coming up in discussions, and oh, how I hate that term, and anyone who uses it, so I left for some years, until I bought a Nikon D3 in addition to my Leica.)

Samuli Vahonen wrote:
Plasticity or whatever it's called if caused by camera system needs always (DISCLAIMER: I DO KNOW THERE IS NO CONSENSUS WHAT IS 3D ETC. SO STOP READING IF THIS BOTHERS YOU!!!!!) 3 things (best definition by Carstens in here):

Anyway, I think my use of the word 3D for only one part of a whole is confusing, so I have decided to modify my terms, and adopt the word volume from Samuli instead. I also use the benefit of time to re-word a couple of sentences for clarity. This leaves my definitions as follows:

  1. The feeling of seeing objects in a photo at different distances I describe as having Depth, and any lens could do that under the right circumstances. In particular, Leica and Zeiss lenses can do that equally well. This can be achieved with boke, with perspective, and so on, or with a combination of these. Samuli's forest photos have lots of this.
  2. What I describe as Volume is the feeling of being able to imagine reaching into a photo and feeling the shape of some non-flat object in it. Charles' Phi Phi full-body portrait is one example, Luka's snail is another, and Martin's Volvo is a third.
  3. A third concept is that of Texture. An example would be imagining being able to reach into a shot and feel the roughness of a wall, or of stubble, and so on. Mike's photo of El Capitan is one example, Vladi's leather handbag another.

The combination of one or more of these sometimes results in a photo which gives the feeling of looking at the original scene, rather than a photo of it, exactly what Samuli's holy grail is (and Luka's, IIRC). This would be 3D.

Notes:

1) Not all these parts are required. Specifically, boke is not required to produce depth, and is thus not needed for 3D.

2) When people disagree with these terms, it is usually because they use the word 3D to describe what I call Depth, only, especially as produced by boke.

3) I think the ability to imagine Volume is strongly related to experience and memories. I would have no idea what I would feel when touching Martin's Volvo, for example, if I had not already felt the body of a car like that, but now that I have, it is very vivid.

4) The size of a web image is strongly related to its ability to show 3D. Only large images show 3D well, I believe. When photos get too small, they lose something. This is the reason my image size has crept up to 1100x733 in recent times. This is still comfortable on a 15" laptop, which I think is a reasonable compromise.

Carsten, that you so much for putting all this time and effort for the collective good. I agree 100% with your terms, and will try to use them from now on. Well done! Depth, Volume and Texture, the 3 henchmen on 3D!

Carsten, glad you found the discussions I was having last year with Samuli about the differences between 50P and 50MP. I was telling Samuli about the difference in DOF between my two lenses and he showed me how the difference in focus rolloff while stopped down could be used to show spatial relative difference of objects front to back in a scene which was more 3-dimensional and also show volume better. I see the same things between my C/Y 35/1.4 and my ZF 35/2.
I have been busy shooting a new example comparison of this different falloff behavior of the 50's and will post it tonight when I get a chance. I was going to post it yesterday but I went to meet Ajay and shoot some 35 comparison shots with his new 35/1.4 and my C/Y 35/1.4 and ZF 35/2.I had a great time meeting, shooting and talking gear with Ajay. The new 35/1.4 is a very nice lens with really smooth bokeh, more saturated color, and less CA and renders better tougher things light backlit tree branches etc. It was not hard to focus at all and really has a nice longer focus throw and things go in and out of focus very smoothly. It has the softer look for portraits which is more forgiving/flattering.

Kind regards,
Bernd

PS: Count me in as one of those who favores the ZF1.4/50 for what he does. Had one, changed it for the 50MP, sold this and bought back a ZF1.4/50.

Thanks Philippe and Wayne!

I wish I would have re-read those old pages in complete detail before now (I am just finishing pages 54-60 or so), because all that I have painfully found out in the last 48 hours was already written. I don't think I discovered a single new fact. At least the new examples I have shot will be there for posterity.

Although I have to say that seeing characteristics like the 50MP's dramatic field curvature (dramatic is an understatement, wide open) in my own photos is very different than seeing it in the Finnish forests. I had no idea. I am not sorry that I bought the 50MP, but I think I will end up with the 50P as well. It seems that Zeiss has built the perfect lens in two pieces.

Oh, and I just picked up an as-new Contax 80-200/4. I think that will take care of my light-duty tele needs (I also own the fantastic 200/2 VR). My regular kit will now be 21, 50MP, 100MP and 80-200.

I also think that some of Samuli's comments about depth of field vs. print size will cause me to start shooting more stopped down. I hadn't thought about it before, but it is very true that at larger print sizes, depth of field appears less, so to retain my look, I will need more. I have recently picked up a ColorMunki and will calibrate my printer soon, maybe even tomorrow, and start printing again. It has been a long time.

Nice shots Fracas!

I'm thinking about what my next zeiss would be. The 100MP or give one of the 1.4 family a chanche, because I also like the different rendering style.
We'll see.

Interesting discussion and some great images posted so far. Akul has been meticulous in thanking everyone individually but I'll say a global "wow, thanks" to everyone posting.

Carsten, some interesting comparison shots. Thanks. I'd seen the discussion in the earlier pages of this thread about the 50mm lenses before I got the 50MP and it's been nearly a month since then. I did look at some great 50P examples from Samuli, Philippe and Martin from early on in the thread and thought long and hard about the 50P but went with the Makro .
(Apologies to the other posters who posted plenty examples - I can't remember all of them)

Anyway, I've accumulated a small set of images and casual snapshots with the MP. I'll try to put some up when I get the time, but thanks once again for more comparison shots! The tree with the pink flowers does have artistic content Good shots.

Now the aspects of 3D have been debated a lot and I tend to agree with you on volume and depth and also about sometimes feeling drawn to touch and feel something which ties in nicely with texture.
In addition, I feel another significant factor is present that most of us tend to forget or not discuss enough in terms of 3D and that is the correct presence of shadows! I think Samuli has mentioned it once earlier in this thread but I don't see it being mentioned often [maybe it has and I have forgotten!!! ]

A shadow can hint at the direction of light in the scene and can give more presence and volume to the main subject and can also offer many more depth cues . For example, the length of a tree shadow can be an indicator of time of day while at the same time giving some relief to the trunk/base of the tree relative to the ground. An extra dimension if done right.

One way of getting the 3D effect is to think about how we position ourselves w.r.t the subject and in context to how it is being lit. Shadows can affect contour definition in addition to DoF and other factors.

Edit: Removed the cartoon example

Jochenb: Nice shot of the spider! Can't even see a hint of its web. And I like the one of the beachfront as well.
fracas: Nice series of night shots, there's a very bold quality about them.
