Re: ZE/ZF/ZM Images (Official Thread!)

Interesting discussion and some great images posted so far. Akul has been meticulous in thanking everyone individually but I\'ll say a global \"wow, thanks\" to everyone posting.

Carsten, some interesting comparison shots. Thanks. I\'d seen the discussion in the earlier pages of this thread about the 50mm lenses before I got the 50MP and it\'s been nearly a month since then. I did look at some great 50P examples from Samuli, Philippe and Martin from early on in the thread and thought long and hard about the 50P but went with the Makro .
(Apologies to the other posters who posted plenty examples - I can\'t remember all of them)

Anyway, I\'ve accumulated a small set of images and casual snapshots with the MP. I\'ll try to put some up when I get the time, but thanks once again for more comparison shots! The tree with the pink flowers does have artistic content Good shots.

Now the aspects of 3D have been debated a lot and I tend to agree with you on volume and depth and also about sometimes feeling drawn to touch and feel something which ties in nicely with texture.
In addition, I feel another significant factor is present that most of us tend to forget or not discuss enough in terms of 3D and that is the correct presence of shadows! I think Samuli has mentioned it once earlier in this thread but I don\'t see it being mentioned often [maybe it has and I have forgotten!!! ]

Anyway, take a look at the (self-drawn, imperfect ) example below to see what I mean:

A shadow can hint at the direction of light in the scene and can give more presence and volume to the main subject and can also offer many more depth cues . For example, the length of a tree shadow can be an indicator of time of day while at the same time giving some relief to the trunk/base of the tree relative to the ground. An extra dimension if done right.

I guess most of us know that already, so I am afraid it is redundant text

another example is
here

One way of getting the 3D effect is to think about how we position ourselves w.r.t the subject and in context to how it is being lit. Shadows can affect contour definition in addition to DoF and other factors.
