Hi Alex, and welcome!

To answer your many questions: no, Zeiss lenses are not required to make fine pictures, or "the finest pictures", or whatever. But they do, on average, deliver extra quality that, for example, Canon lenses do not. Browsing the landscape forum makes me feel that, despite the obvious photographic talent, there is often "something" missing. If you feel the same way, then there are Zeiss lenses that already have your name on them! Please note that I wrote "on average". This matters, because there are very fine Canon lenses as well, such as the two TS/E, the 135L or your proposed 70-200 f:4 IS.

Zooms or primes, and AF or not? Will you "miss shots" by not having AF? Definitely. If your style is to capture as many "magical moments" as possible, then use your 24-70 and complement it by one or two primes. In my case, my photography is much more defined by the shots I get than by those I miss, so I sold my Canon zooms, then my Canon primes, and I happily sold my soul to Zeiss. But that is an individual choice. Also, primes "force" you to adjust to what you have, without the ease of a zoom. That forced exercise moves some people to be more creative than they would in their placement and their composition, and thus get better shots. Am I one of them? Yes. Is this truth? No, others are welcome to feel otherwise. As another photographer said: you can always buy a zoom, and only use one focal length at a time!
Now as to the gear for your city trips, most of your shots will be somewhere between 35mm and 50mm, so your first prime should be one of these two focal lengths, depending which one works best for you. In my case, I would say I need a 50mm first, then a 35 or a 28. I could live with just those two for the cities you mention. The 21 is a fabulous lens, but I use it much less because there is too much cr*p that gets in the way (telephone poles, wires, advertising, signposts etc...) with such a wide lens. A long lens? Well, if you are a tele sort of guy, bring one, but it will be a minority use to you AFAIAC. TS/E lenses are much more time-consuming to use, and require serious skills, as well as a tripod. As tripods are forbidden in many crowd-pulling areas, I wouldn't get too hung up on them. But what I would defintely do is bring a small second camera in case something happens to your main one. Your choice of a second DSLR body, or a small setup (I use a Sony NEX with a Zeiss ZM 35, and get very satisfying results from it). You think this doesn't happen? Well, I went on a four-day trip to the Lofoten islands a month ago just for photography, and my 5DII shutter failed. Fortunately, it "only" failed at the ens of the trip...
In summary, my suggestion is: your 24-70L, a 135L, a Zeiss 35 f:1.4, if you can get one, or f:2.0, a Zeiss 50 f:1.4, or 50 MP if you want the close-up ability. I know that you showed a 3-lens kit, and I suggest 4, but the ZE 50 f:1.4 is small and light, so it shouldn't matter...:-).
And, by the way, if you make Paris one of your destinations, let me know and I would be happy to meet at and shoot with you. That way, I can call you "padruga", and even "lapochka" if you want, and you can laugh the great, sonorous, heart-warming laugh that only Russians have...:-)

cyra: delightful city shots. The second one is my favorite, and just the sort of shot I love to take!
Love your second shot as well, pingflood!

Vey nice, Ron, Martynas and Lars!

My 50MP just got here, and it is very sharp at all distances, has very nice boke, some vignetting wide open, but I find the focusing quite stiff. It is brand new, so perhaps I just need to use it a bit? My 100MP is butter-smooth.

cyra, kiddik: thanks for your opinions and links

rscheffler: I'd love to use leica m9 system and some those famous lenses but I'm on a tighter budget :))

philber: I have to say I'm totally confused. As everybody says it's not only due to zeiss but zeiss helps a lot. I try to apply this to my shooting style and don't know how. So I decided to post oot links on my images from Italy. Being highly zeiss expirienced could you tell what my photoes lack of? I simply suggest that my travel style doesn't reveal all benefits of using zeiss glass such as thin DOF, bokeh, 3D rendering. Could you tell what my pictures are able to obtain if shot bt zeiss? Are they so boring "tourist snapshots"? I know they aren't awful but I look for your adequate critique considering benefits of using zeiss.

They are ordinary jpegs with original exif data included.
Venice boat tram trip. It's definitely an action shot that I'm not a fan of. AF helped me a lot.
One more from boat trip. I doubt it could be shot with a MF prime.
Collesium. Night photography is my passion.
Some of St Peter's. Are colors natural or dead?
Michelangelo's Pietà. I could't argue it's an ordinary view.
And once again sorry for OOT but I still need your help. Actually I have no opportunity to try out zeiss lenses for a week of so before I buy them.

as I can see you had harder times with russians than cyra :wink "lapochka" is almost a benchmark in learning russian by foreigh speakers, my congratulations. and thanks for invitation to paris photo trip.

The M9 is just one camera possible for such a set, which will work equally well with other cameras and equivalent lenses.

Edit: I looked at your sample photos and they look fine to me. Zeiss lenses are not going to make you a better creative photographer in terms of content, composition, etc. They'll offer a different rendering from Canon, Nikon, etc. which some prefer and others don't. The differences are generally subtle and something the average person looking at your images won't discern.

One thing I will disagree with you about is the need for AF in the first two images you linked to. Both are relatively wide angle images that could have been easily shot with manual focus and using hyperfocal distance or even guessing the distance. The problem with AF lenses is they are not designed for accurate, easy manual focusing. The focusing scales are nearly useless whereas the focusing scale on a Zeiss and pretty much any other manual focus lens is very accurate. This is one of the reasons I decided to get the M9, because I wasn't all that happy with the image quality of the Canon L series wide angle zoom lenses I was using, but also the irritatingly high number of times that the AF focused incorrectly and that I couldn't notice by eye in the viewfinder. But because those lenses don't have good manual focusing scales it's difficult to use them as manual focus lenses (though live view partly solves that problem now). For wide angle lenses, AF is over rated (IMO) unless you always shoot fast lenses wide open and often work in low light conditions where it can be difficult to manually focus an SLR. For travel type photography, MF wide angle lenses generally will not cause you to miss images. It does help to have a camera with live view for those times when you want to be careful about focus, and this would also apply to the use of AF lenses.

Ron

Lars, seriously good stuff, here! Well done!

Alex, I looked at your stuff. Zeiss lenses will give you more vivid colours and contrast, but is that "enough" of what you are looking for? Only you can answer...
Here is what I hope can help you. I went to India a couple of years ago with some Canon lenses and a couple of Zeiss. Same camera, same PP, same photographer...:-)
Check it out, and see how much of a difference the lens brand makes. Basically, 50mm and 85mm were Zeiss ZE f:1.4, all others were Canon, mostly L (from memory, 24-105L, 35L, 135L, 200L f:2.8)

Hope this helps
