Most people here say focus shift... but in my experience and on my copy it's always spot on. same with 85 planar.
for me it's either misfocused [ whole image is blurry ] or correctly focused on my intended spot.
Mine definitely exhibits focus shift from f2.8-5.6. I tested it on a tripod and then figured out how to get around it in most shots. If I am between 2.8-5.6 I focus until sharp in the viewfinder and then back off a touch (focus just a smidge in front). This works extremely well most of the time. But like every manual focus lens on a digital SLR it's not an exact science unless you're on a tripod using live view (which is awesome for manual focus).
Sometimes I'll use the depth of field preview button while focusing and this works well too, though it is a little awkward.

Thanks, Luka! The first three were at f/2 and the fourth was f/2.8. I love this lens too. I bought it here from a fellow FM member and have been enjoying it the past three weeks. Yesterday I picked up the Zeiss 50/2 MP and can't wait to put it through its paces. I will enjoy comparing it to the 50/1.4.
I've got a 50/f1.4 on order. Should be here next week. Loving your photos. I'm excited to see what I can do with it.
Looking forward to seeing more shots!

Right on. It's one of those lenses that get better and better the more you get to know it. I've read several times in different places something to the effect of, "you can't take close-ups with the 50/1.4" or "it's no good at anything below f2." I would respectfully disagree. The secret is to find out how to use the unique signature of the lens to make images that make you happy. The "finding out" part is what's so fun. I compare it to getting to know a new friend.
Have fun with the new lens! I can't wait to see some of your images in the weeks to come.

your first two weeks will be a disappointment. remember this -- the lens is not optimized for close focusing.
you want to be close to your subject? no problem stop down the lens. otherwise you will be one of those people
who are cursing this lens.
Almost went with a 28/2 or 25/2, but ultimately decided I wanted to go wider and picked up the 21/2.8 Milvus. Images cross-posted on the presentation boards.
Shorline Syncopation
Cacophonous crashing of tides, a syncopation at once at peace, ever unsettled.
Emergent Asylum
Beyond the shrouded fog, silently approaching the emergent asylum.
Also a couple with the 50/1.4.
The Schrödinger Equation
Amidst ripples, beyond, within, the spark of wisdom wends towards a singularity. Beyond, within, impervious. The spark of wisdom emerging from a singularity.
The Vanishing Nexus
Muddied lucidity at an end of the chasm, plunging towards the vanishing nexus. Convergence always just below, here a step behind.
that's the classic 50 planar's character same with 85P.. that's the reason why Zeiss left it as Classic and never went to milvus line... they will remain classic.
