Hi ManWearPants, I want to share my possessed knowledges on this particular zoom lens, this is my own opinion and am not influenced by anything to write this:
It has all characters of Zeiss optics and bokeh also.I usually take at 80mm and thin DOF it gives painting like patterns, that stuns me everytime. At other FL it quite good but nothing special.Macro 1:2 always at 80mm, never change. As Zeiss optics is made mainly for film it has much higher resolution that Digitals can perceive, the same happens to 28-80mm.I have chances to switch this lens between Canon EF and Sigma SD, I see that Canon has weaker color reproduction than Sigma( Canon R: 50%, Gr: 25%, Bl: 25% while Sigma all 3 colors: 100%)
On the pics, I see Sigma's always better Canon's.I even try the best the Zeiss Makro lens : Apo-Makro-Planar on 5D2, this combo failed in comparison to 28-80mm on SD 9.Here is the role of digital sensor : Foveon.
My 28-80mm now on Sigma reserved for flower shooting only.
I love my 28-80mm and SD so much.I think if I lose it I must buy another 28-80mm and if I lose SD9 I must buy SD1. ...Show more →
@wayne seltzer: thank, u're very kind, this pic I try demonstrate the flower shooting abilities of N 70-200mm, not as much details and colors as desired but acceptable.
@ManWearPants: poison, oh no, I just try to show how I get Pics( especially flowers, Canon sensor seems not reach that levels) and at the present time SD1 price is as much as 5D2 but get that you'll face the shortage of Zeiss converted AF lenses unless you can do conversion yourself.
I just shot some models in a Boudoir photo workshop yesterday with my Contax N 85/1.4 on my 1ds3 and that lens still blows me away how good it is for portraits. Incredible Zeiss sharpness, contrast, colors and smooth bokeh. Still wish Zeiss had produced a Contax N 35/1.4 with bokeh like the 85.

Yes, it is a pity a Contax N 35/1.4 was not released. The N85 is one lens that is keeping me with Canon. Else I would have gone Sony's way. I wonder will the 5D3 make this an even more remarkable lens with its sensor's wider DR and DPP's DLO.
I hope Conurus can come up with a lens profile so that the AA filter effect can be removed in DPP. That would be awesome!

Thanks Wayne, this PnS is very friendly, it can do manual focus with central magnification probably 5X, it helps sooo much - hope every camera has it as I incline to macro photography.
