Internet babble & MTF's report both lenses are stronger at their respective wide ends. The weakness in the 17-35 is in and around 28mm but picks up again out at 35mm.

85mm is my favorite focal length..... so, definitely 85/1.4 ......
That's my favorite focal length too. What about N85 vs your old favorite Contax 100/2?
That is a tough call ....
I haven't used N85 enough to make such decision...
However, having AF advantage and an extra stop, I'd most likely go with N85 ...
I have both lenses and they are different so it depends on what you are looking for:
N 85 has smoother bokeh, faster and is more of a portrait lens as it's sharpness drops off towards the borders.
C/Y 100/2 Planar is sharp across the frame with less smooth bokeh.
I would use the N 85 more for portraits and narrow DOF shooting and I would use the 100/2 Planar for landscape and environmental portraits where you would want to show more detail in the background bokeh.
Is it feasible to go for N85 now considering that it definitely surpass the price of 85L? I can justify my N50 as the overall cost still works out cheaper than 50L. I can also justify my N17-35 as it is cheaper than Zeiss 18 + 21 + 25 + 28 + 35 put togetherand divide by 2. I guess the N85 is something that is beyond any justifications now and has to be driven by the heart.
Andi, Nice shots!
What mtns. are those? Is that first one a ski area?
ManWearPants,
N85 plus conversion is a lot of money and is not for the financially faint of heart.
When I bought mine I was thinking that I should commit myself to the alt lens funny farm.
But I really love mine as it sharp wide open, has the typical zeiss great color and microcontrast, and has better contrast wide open than the 85L. Also, better than usual zeiss bokeh
