I always enjoy this thread, and it's a winner again this year. Here's my contribution. It's special because this day was the first day I shot a beif where the eagle was close enough to identify...
My word, holy Cr@d! What a bunch of beautiful photos!
I looked through all of them, and very impressive indeed.
Always a tough question for me, because what my favorite is and what is my best photo are two different things....
So do we pick the cleanest? Most difficult? Most unusual? Yikes! We need some more posts... I chose one in difficult lighting, and also highly unusual for our area to see owl fledges. Loved this family, and visited them often! Worth every hour of non production, it's not my best work, but my favorite...young owls
At least one of my favorities. I wanted to head to GTNP and YNP during the rut for some bugling action. I came upon this satellite bull in the thick stuff, followed him for awhile till he bedded. He gave out one last forlorn bugle from his bed.

Here's my favorite shot of 2009 for many reasons.
Ken came up to Seattle on a whirlwind tour and tops on his list was a Bald Eagle.
My good friends Tim K and Bonnie joined in for what turned out to be a magical morning in the kayaks. We hadn't been on the water more than 15 minutes when this magnificent one flew in and landed right in front of the boats. One of those special times in the field when everything comes together. Light, subject, environment and great company. Good times my friends

This is most definitely my favorite image of 2009. It was taken in February at the Ngorongoro Crater National Park, Tanzania.
We came upon this scene just as a several hour struggle to take down a cape buffalo had ended. One of the pride members seems to be taking pause to reflect on the success.

This little Hawk Owl is one of my favourites from this year. Since they travel so fast, I like the challenge they present photographing them in flight.
Here's mine. I think this is my best to date with the colors and light.
This is one of the many gulf fritillaries that grew up on my passion vine. We had tons of them flying around till the end of summer. Took this on a cool afternoon when the butterflies weren't as active as usual. I wish I had a few good bird pictures to choose from, but school and weather limited my opportunities. Better luck in 2010.
