Managed to get to the post office and pick mine up this evening! I've had a little play around the house with it, and it's perfect for me! No focus issues on MarkII, and looks spot on! Super excited to get outside with it!
To the OP, next Poll should be " How many copies did you try before getting one that works", and you should include "I gave up", "still not happy but will live with it" and "I only use MF"
Called B&H today... sending the Sigma back for another copy... just when I thought I had it dialed in... nope... would front focus or miss the focus. So..... I will give it another try when copy #2 arrives... maybe I will get lucky and this will be a keeper.

If you can afford it I'd suggest picking up a few copies at one (2-3) and cherry pick the best of the batch, assuming there is one. This is what I think I'm going to do in a few days, if none of them work out I'll quit looking for a good one all together.

That is a good idea... I love my Sigma 180mm macro... and when the 50mm hit... WOW... the images had/have a very "real" feel to them is the only way I can describe it. So... fingers crossed.. there will be a good one in the mix.
Best of luck with your quest. I hope you get a good copy and you don't have to test a bunch to find it.
Nice little lens... just wish Sigma had better quality control.
Not giving up just yet... the adventure has just begun.

My version is a bit strange. After I got it, I noticed that it back focused pretty bad on my 20D. Matter of fact, it ruined a lot of great pictures that were shot in low light. I thought of returning it, but tested it on the 5D2, and it magically focused just right. I fell in love with the lens, and kept using it. The 5D2 seemed to automatically adjust the backfocus issue. However, recently, I'm noticing that even on the 5D2, the focus problems are starting to come back slightly in some of the pics. I need to send this thing in to get it looked at.
Sometimes I wonder if Sigma wouldn't be better off leaving AF out and just releasing glass like this as MF (ala Zeiss). The optics are terrific, but people buy an AF lens expecting AF to actually work well, and the MF ring doesn't have a particularly good feel to it. Put a nice focusing ring on it, leave it MF, and I bet people would line up to pay $300 or so for it.
Yeah, and even with the ring as it is, I do think it is worth the sales prices, but yeah
with a better focus ring and still having auto aperture, I think I'd still pay close to
$500 for it. [Which explains why I don't want to get rid of mine, I guess.
It's still excellent glass.]
Was thinking of pulling the trigger on this lens, but after reading this thread, and having experienced most of the same headaches with the Sigma 30 1.4, I'm gonna let it pass for now.

I only wish Canon would release 50/1.4 Mk II with ring USM and IF design like the 85/1.8 USM. I'm fed up with all these linear extensions.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
Yeah...you and me both. I'd like to see a new 50/1.2 as well. I wonder if a 60/1.4 or 60/1.2 would exhibit the same issues as a 50mm variant....

Yes, I started the thread to bash sigma Why not actually read the OP? Furthermore, why not check my profile.
No matter what your intentions are, topics like these always turn into Sigma bashing topics. How do you know if the people voting this poll own this lens? Right, you don't.
