Wfrank, great amusement park shots and conversions. Mind sharing your process?

Forgot this sry. Overcast sky did do most actually - but usually I try out some color filters. And horrific reds in the inside scene made me go BW. Saw your memo now - responded with some more details.

Seb, love the super-bench (ie stitching one) - colors are great a bit purpleblueish perhaps but I like it tweaked.

By the way, I wanted to say something. I have reviewed all photos taken last weekend with this lens and 5D MKIII and I have 0% of in focus pictures while relying on either af-confirm or my own eyes and a viewfinder.
Several shots that are in focus were taken with Live view, but with live view I have no control over composition because I need to magnify and see whether eyes are in focus and I do not know what is the overall composition of the shot.
A nightmare really...........not sure what to do.

I have a similar problem with the D800, although not quite as bad as you describe, simply due to the narrow depth of field and the huge resolution. Sometimes I nail the shots, but when there is a bit less light, I often need to shoot 2, 3, or even 4 more shots to get one in focus.

My recommendation is to use image review religiously to know when to reshoot, and as for composing and focusing, compose first, then jump into live view mode, move the focus point to the eye (or whatever) you want to focus on, without changing the composition, and only then jump to 50% or 100% magnification to focus. When you are focused, shoot without leaving live view if it is a person, or you can leave live view if it is a landscape etc.

Why don't you finally do this? Your story about it is going on for months already on different websites. How come you just can't make up your mind?
I really think that the 35L is a better choice for you.

Has anyone thought about using an EVF with focus peaking (like Zacuto or SmallHD) with their 1.4/35? I've been considering getting one (possibly the SmallHD DP4) both to assist with manual focusing during hand-held shooting as well as a tool for assisting me in framing my scenes better when shooting from a tripod. Seems like focus peaking would certainly solve the problem of focusing in Live View while maintaining overall composition control (since it eliminates the need to zoom in to achieve focus).

the c/y version seems quite easy to focus wide open on my fx-3 as long as i keep the subject in the center 2/3 of the frame. i have around a 90% hit accuracy and most of my misses are due to difficulty tracking a moving subject. this might be due to film being more forgiving than digital, the fx-3 having a better viewfinder, or the c/y version having more pop and being easier to focus than the new ZE.

I use sometimes my Zactuto EVF, when sharp images are crucial.
It is definitety a help, but at the same time the handling is not so comfortable. I mount it behind my 5d2. The EVF turns it into a brick. The handling is like the one of an alien gun or so

With my 5DMkII and my C/Y, which was recently stolen, I didn't have any problems when using live view, I also have Magic Lantern beta.
This is one lens that I will have to replace.

The SmallHD monitor device looks intriguing.

The CY 35/1.4 is easy to focus with a 5D2 if you use the EG-S matte. As long as we are talking short DOF and fairly close subjects that is. Not 100% hit ratio but something like 70%, and I am pretty picky where the focus plane is. LV is not for me in 9 out of 10 shots as it's far too slow.

The 5D3 doesnt bring much new to the table if you're not using AF. Quite the opposite for not supporting fast mattes. Cant tell about the D800, but I assume a better matte is even more needed as the resolution is bombastic :-)

The focusing screen is really good on the D800, and it would kick ass in the D700 (and maybe in the 5DII and/or 5DIII). However, while in good light, I can keep a good keeper rate with the D800, as soon as the light drops a bit, so does the keeper rate, due to the high resolution being so much more picky about correct focus. Even something as simple as moving into the shade on a sunny day. I am currently experimenting with live view even for handheld shooting, which obviously works best with relatively static subjects. I go into live view, compose, and while keeping the composition, move the focus point to the correct place, and then drop into 100% view, where I focus and shoot. There is a sort of double-sound, which I think is the photo being taken quickly, and then the live view coming back on slowly, but I need to verify that this is indeed what is happening. On a tripod with a static subject, there is no issue, just use standard live view practice.

Buggz, check out this comparison between the SmallHD DP4 and the Zacuto EVF (be sure to watch all 3 parts). Although I would prefer a bigger screen, after seeing this, I am leaning towards the Zacuto. I guess I am adding this to my wish list now, as I am broke after buying the D800.

By the way, Wilhelm, 36MP sounds like a much bigger number than 21MP or 22MP, but in real life it is just a bit more. I think the AA filter is lighter on the D800 on top of this, but 22MP is loads of resolution already. I really got the D800 just because I wanted a FX Nikon with higher resolution than about 16MP. Ironic, isn't it. In spite of not really needing the 36MP, I do enjoy it. Last time I was out shooting with Bernhard (with his 5DII), he forbid my using the words "sharp", "resolution" and "detail" and any variants thereof, while chimping.

If bulkiness is no contra- argument, then go for it. It's really a good screen.
