I am trying to get comfortable with the focal plane. In other words, I do not want to shoot all my wide open shots with the subject less than a foot from my lens, but that is where you get the most dramatic background blur. Whereas, I notice a lot of the "3D" shots in this thread, the subject is anywhere from 1-4 meters away (guessing). So I guess I am having a hard time understanding how to get separation from a subject with this lens without having to move into infinity focus, which is not this lens's strength anyhow...
You'll probably need to log back into the "SLR Lens & Camera Review" home site and look for the 35mm challenge - I looked at that test some years ago - it's not going to tell you much - the differences of those two lenses are MF vs. AF and character - they are both good lenses - it depends on what each individual wants and how character is judged. I've seen great images from each - the Canon Forum has a few 35 "L" threads to review - I like the Contax rendering - don't need AF.
Something is wrong with that website's code, you can access them in Benchmarks zone.

That topic compared Summilux 35/1.4, ZM 35/2, C/Y 35/1.4, Zeiss 35/2. I don't remember a 35L.
I'm delighted by the fantastic pictures in this thread.
I was a Zeiss fan before I discovered this Alternative Gear & Lenses section. But now I'm an addict.
Some shots with my new Zeiss 35/1.4 ZE. Nothing special just tried out my new gear.
All shots are at f1.4.

Nice photos.
Does that lens have 9 aperture blades?
Here are some more pictures from 35/1.4 ZE version. Shot wide open on my way home from work. I tried to capture some of the Zeiss look with bench pictures.
Just tried...
I just took a weekend vacation to NYC with my 40D + c/y 35 1.4 and my 24-105L....I used the canon for maybe 5 photos max. Here is the set..I may have been a bit overzealous with the sharpening but the zeiss responds so well to PP its insane...(this was the first real shoot using the 35)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/crazeazn/sets/72157626438926464/ for the full set. Yes I know its a travesty to use on a crop body but I'm still waiting for the 5DIII replacement. Also the EF-S focus screen makes it extremely easy to focus. I had about a 75%+ keeper rate...plus i like to shoot off center and it was just much easier to do full mf...
