Well it seems I managed to get me a C/Y 35/1.4 too. I will probably receive it later this week. Fingers crossed it will work on my 5DII :-)
Will be interesting to see how the two compares.
That's a very poor copy of the Zeiss 35/1.4. Maybe it is an older C/Y version (non T*) , or it has some haze/fungus? My Rollei lens has none of that blooming at f/1.4 - let alone f/2.

A
looking forward to the comparison
On that note, I didnt have any mirror issues either with the 5D2. I did have to adjust the infinity focus on the lens itself though. I've yet to test it on my 5D though which is less forgiving since my Planar 50/1.7 hangs the mirror on it but is perfectly fine on my 5D2.
I will get the lens later this week. Hope that it works on my 5DII.
Have a really busy schedule at the moment so I canīt promise a test soon.
I want to test the Oly 18/3.5 against the ZF21 too. I might be able to test all four at the same time.

I was also surprised by the poor results of the 35 1.4. Maybe there are IQ variation between the HFT, AE and MM version?
The only guess I would hazard is that the copy of the C/Y that was tested alongside the Z* had some sort of defect. I have seen far too many exceptional images shot with the C/Y version wide open to agree with those test results. My copy of the C/Y is also much better in the corners than this test lets on. Maybe his lens was decentered or had some coating defects? At any rate, I need 1.4, and the Z* is certainly a poor performer at that aperture.
And by the way, I believe the SL35 version of the lens is pretty much identical as far as the lens groupings go. The coatings are different, as well as the lens barrels, but the optical groupings are the same. There is also no difference between the AE and MM versions as far as I know. I will have access to a ZE 35/2 and a 35/2 Summicron-R soon. I will test those against my C/Y 35/1.4 and my Nikkor AIS 35/1.4. I have a good copy of the Nikkor and the Zeiss, so I am very interested in how much the new Z* improves over it's older brother.
Waiting for the rumored new Z* 35/1.4 to be announced and see how it compares to this C/Y version.
Depending on price, these older C/Y versions will probably drop some in price, especially with the mirror interference potential problems.
I too have been wanting someone here in the forum to do a comparison between Z* 35/2 and C/Y 35/1.4 but still nobody has done one yet. My guess is that the 1.4 beats the 2 at f2 and they probably are even at 2.8 and then the 2 beats it after that. I hope Zeiss even improves the performance of the 1.4 wide open when it releases its new updated Z* design.
And my hope is that Zeiss issue a 35 f:1.4 that espouses the supremely elegant, understated drawing style of its f:1.4 siblings, whilst continuing to offer the 35 f:2.0 to the sharpness fiends
